Status: offline 		How come we don't have one of these? What's the matter with everyone? We've got so many movie lovers here, we should have a thread to talk about them. So - one of you hurry up and start one, damn it!

OK then! As long as we've got a thread, let's talk about movies! What was the last movie you saw? Like it? Why or why not?

Gene Kelly - or Fred Astaire?

Who's your favorite director?

Best film you ever saw... that nobody else has ever heard of? Got a "10 best" list?

Would "Casablanca" still be one of the greatest films of all time if George Raft had gotten the lead?

How did Naomi Watts not win an Oscar for "21 Grams?"

Status: offline 		With only 5 days left until Christmas, I'm falling a little behind on my Christmas movies. I've got "White Christmas" on now; it's the scene where Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are singing "Sisters" in drag. That was actually not in the original script - Kaye and Crosby came up with it spontaneously while clowning around during rehearsal, and director Michael Curtiz thought it was so hilarious he worked it into the film. And if I recall correctly, Kaye wasn't the first choice for that role. He was third, I believe. Fred Astaire turned it down first, and they actually started the production with someone else who pulled out early on. They had to scramble for a last-minute replacement, and that's how Danny Kaye got the job. He's not Fred Astaire, but he does make a good foil for Crosby. It's hard to imagine the movie without him.

I bypassed Avatar this weekend, can't shake the feeling that it's not much more than a $300 million dollar video game.

Looking forward to Up in the Air and Sherlock Holmes, both out on Christmas day.

Status: offline 		I am looking at Sherlock Holmes myself, Level.  1, to see if that actor is truly bounded to the bed (hint hint, pic time) and 2, I like a bit of a ruffin in my Holmes, not the neat and tidy as betrayed on Star Trek:NG.

Mark, My Favorite Year is a terrific movie. O'Toole is an incredible actor. So's Billy Bob, but I haven't seen Badder Santa.

Status: offline 		Last movie I saw was inglorious basterds. which I thoroughly enjoyed, except for Brad Pitts accent, now I have nothing against a southern accent, but he grates on me anyway. Apart from that, very enjoyable, typical Tarantino for the phsycopathic leads.
Gene Kelly  for a duo single, as in tap dancing, but Fred Astaire for sheer swirling magical sweep off your feet joy. when I was little I wanted to dance a quickstep with Fred.
Danny Kaye is still one of my favourites,  he could alwys make me laugh. And I loved him in Hans Christian Anderson, and doing singing in the rain:)
Holiday Inn is one of my all time favourites.
I am sooooo looking forward to Sherlock Holmes too

They do a treatment on Santa Claus vs The Martians which I may watch this week, although there are no good Christmas movies, only those made tolerable by some sense of goodwill.

Status: offline 		I just saw "Precious" and it was pretty good. I had read the book "Push: A Novel" by Sapphire that it was based on and, of course, the book was better and more descriptive. I give it a 7.

Before that, we saw "Blind Side" and it was about a 7 also. Sad and funny and, of course, inspiring, because it was true.

Status: offline 		I'm halfway through my Winter Holiday Thing present to myself, a Michael Haneke box set. The White Ribbon, The Piano Teacher, etc etc. Good if you like bleak.
Also looking forward to Sherlock Holmes, that's my plan for Boxing Day if I don't get roped into doing a shift.

Status: offline 		I had TCM on yesterday........watched it while I was cooking pralines and fudge and stuff.

I liked Dr Zhivago better this time. How the West was Won, was on when I turned it on..........okay for what it is. Ben Hur was on later.......I have never been a fan of Chuck Heston at all

I agree with you totally re: 21 Grams. Great movie.

There are so many movies I love. The Cohen brothers always seem to delight me. I haven't seen a lot of movies this year but what I have, I have liked. Juno is a delightful movie that even GD loved. Milk, Doubt, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, the last Bond flick. Both Elizabeth movies. Vicky Christina Barcelona, another one GD thought was going to kill him to watch and he ended up loving it.

Will add more as they come to me.

1- There Will Be Blood

2- Children of Men

3- Mulholland Drive

4- A History of Violence 9/10

5- No Country for Old Men 8/10

6- The Incredibles

7- Brokeback Mountain 9/10

8- The Departed 6.5/10 (I almost fell asleep during this, which astounds me; I have to rewatch it)

9- Mystic River 8.5/10

10- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Status: offline 		I saw Sherlock Holmes yesterday, and It's Complicated today. Both are very good, I'm positive they'll be making at least one more Holmes flick.

I'm unable to channel Roger Ebert right now, so that is the extent of my reviews.

*In no particular order (except The Godfather is ALWAYS my number one!)

1.  The Godfather
2.  Hello Dolly
3.  When Harry Met Sally
4.  Three Iron
5.  Like Water for Chocolate
6.  The Mission
7.  Last of the Mohicans
8.  Chocolat
9.  That's all I could come up with.

Of course the list is organic and changes. 

Oh and I loved Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!  (I do believe I'm a weirdo)

I love those movies that are about the clash of cultures coming together.
