The reason I use Skype is that it ensures the person isn't in an internet cafe, has enough access to their PC to install software on it, etc. Anything that can be run from a browser can be used by anyone from anything, which is the big issue with scammers and fakes. That's why all these scammers use Yahoo - can be run from a browser....

I fail to see how using the video chat on this site is going to curtail the number of scammers or fakes (read: webcam show salespeople) or complaints about them.  Those who are entirely fake, such as men pretending to be women and/or 419 scammers will use the same tired excuses for refusing to get on cam -- Oh, my cam is broken, I can't afford to buy one, I'm not at home and I'm on my parent's/cousin's/roommate's/Farmer Fred's computer -- and those who are selling webcam shows will still try to get people to join whatever site they're peddling instead of using this one.  Many people, if not most, can honestly say the chat system on this site locks up and/or crashes their computers, so a refusal to use it is not any sort of litmus test of a user's honesty.

If the administration is genuinely interested in reducing the number of scammers, fakes, and cam show trolls, start by overhauling the reporting system.  Instead of requiring X number of users to report the same profile before the automated system hides the profile for 24 hours, institute a system where a single report will send the profile for review by live people.  If enough people agree with the user who flagged the profile, delete it.  This can be done without increasing the number of moderators or the workload of the current mods and also without requiring paid membership to cover the cost.  At least one other free site has done so by enlisting the help of the users who meet certain criteria.  There's no reason a similar system could not be implemented here.

That site was overrun with scammers and fakes when the reporting system was changed in this way.  Now there are very few false profiles and any new ones that crop up are swiftly eliminated.  That type of system works while the current reporting system on this site does not.

I like being an internet bully. Can I sign up to be an official profile reviewer?

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: Fakes, Scammer, Invite to Chat Button (12/21/2009 1:23:34 PM)

If such a system as I described were implemented here, you would not be the only reviewer.  It would require a predetermined percentage of votes in agreement with the original flagger to remove the profile.  Less than that, and the profile stays.  No internet bullying involved, sorry.

While it could be potentially useful to those who chose to engage in it, I can promise you that I won't be amongst them.

"Online Chatrooms" are one of the only hard limits on my profile. I can't communicate the thoughts I'd like to if I can only "tweet" at people, so I don't participate.  That said, I can think of something that would cause me to go in there.  And that is if you wanted to webcam your fire-and-ice demo (or anything else) for forum regulars, or the room as a whole.

SubmissiveOinker -> RE: Fakes, Scammer, Invite to Chat Button (12/21/2009 5:50:12 PM)

I don't mind going on cam from time to time when the mood suites me, but being I often am not in the mood to go onto a chatroom, being I enjoy taking the time comprehending my thoughts which is why I prefer messages compared to chatrooms and messengers. Now over time once I get to know the person I don't mind going on the phone or skype to prove I am real, however I find it takes time to get to know someone and I just don't enjoy chatrooms. If i go in a chatroom i have to be in the right mood. I tend to be quite a personal type person, prefer talking one on one, often on messengers tend to go on invisble.

They could simply start with a machine comparison of the member's network time, and their chosen location. If the "woman" is in Arizona, and their network signature has them on Western European/African time (CM gets their network time, at least when they send mail) they get booted. And there are plenty of other checks that can be made using simple scripts on the webserver(s). Sure, I access when I travel abroad, but if my login is associated with one single network and timezone, the inference is clear. This need not be complicated or labour intensive, nor does it need advanced programming skills. Boot everybody who creates a profile, sends out more than five emails, then turns off the profile. Etc. Not rocket science, and nobody needs to waste time on videochat.

Didn't I send you pictures of that some time ago?  Dang it!  You have to keep reminding Me about those kinds of things or I forget about them.

I don't have video of it though.  Sorry about that one.

Yay for my Velvet Buddy!!! (Syl) I think that's a fine idea!

Regarding the OP, that is good intel, I do not have a cam, and thought it was a two-way deal. But, that chat function here locks up my computer like few things have, so I will just be doing the cmail-as-chat-function thing that I have been doing.

SylvereApLeanan -> RE: Fakes, Scammer, Invite to Chat Button (12/21/2009 9:22:17 PM)

*Lubz my velvet buddy*

When I was more active on the site I referred to in my earlier post, I routinely participated in "Flag Mod."  It was so gratifying to know that I was helping to rid the site of the spammers and scammers.  Antipode had a good suggestion, but IMO, having a user-maintained system here would cut down on the number of threads dedicated to whining about fakes and scammers because then people would feel like they could do something that had a real impact.  Anyone who's ever reported a profile knows it does precisely jack shyte.  Even if a profile gets enough reports to be hidden, the hide only lasts 24 hours and then it's back.  The current system is utterly ineffective.
