This Hoarders show on A & E is quite interesting and quite disturbing. I think its a show everyone would be interested in. They claim there are 3 million hoarders out there.

I have known a few of these.  Some do not view it as a problem.

I watched one episode of that program and was horrified. After watching it I felt the way I did after exiting WalMart; relief and discomfort all mixed together. I could only stomach the one episode, I won't be watching it again.

It was interesting in a disturbing way, like watching a multi-car pileup on the freeway. I do hope those who participate in that show find help and others like them.

I end up feeling bad for the people living in all that trash, their mental disorders are obvious. I do pull for them to beat the problems they face. I wonder after the mess is cleaned up, do they go back to stacking up garbage again.

By the way Hoarders is on A & E right now at 3 A.M.

The episode I watched checked in on a person they had previously helped. That person, while not full-on trashy again, had already began accumulating much unnecessary stuff. The person in that episode went to one session with a counselor and stopped. So, I'm guessing if they don't receive sufficient psychotherapy they likely will return to their old ways.

I personally would not want people sorting my junk.

Yet- roaches are a sign of a place needing cleaned out. (per episode 1 not me lol)

A very serious illness. Very difficult to treat since the people with it don't want to treat it.

I intend to watch it when I see it on. That's the sort of show (appears that way anyway) that I would really get into watching. But I also love Intervention.

Call me crazy but I am bothered by any television programme that, in my eyes, takes advantage of and uses people that are at their personal worst times in life to make money off of for others entertainment.

Re: Hoarding........I read an interesting news article about the topic the other day and the reality is that very very few people are 'cured' from this particular issue. Primarily because there are several other mental problems involved and the very act of hoarding creates new issues.

Also, I remember reading something about the act of people coming in and removing/cleaning can easily cause more traumatic mental issues for the person/s.

It's a good point but, on the other hand, families will often contact these shows because they lack the resources to help their loved ones on their own. With Intervention, for example, the show paid for the mediator for the intervention itself and the rehab.

yes- but in episode 2 the goat ate thru the wall of the house and was lounging in the bedroom.   the lady wont get the hole fixed until she cleans up the place.

-- I never heard of a goat eating thru a wall of a house.

I agree LaTigresse that the TV program is taking advatange of people in a bad mental state. It is riveting TV though, real Reality TV, not staged stunts liked Operation Repo.

Pa I was wondering about that hole in the wall, I think the house was in bad shape and the hole just rotted and they blamed the goat because it liked looking in the hole.

I saw a glimpse of it last night while channel surfing and what I did saw was puzzling.  I tend to collect stuff myself, but not to the point where the junk haulers have to be called in.  I keep my fairy collection to 2 because of moms collections (she grew up poor in Arkansas) but I collect yarn and crocheting projects at one time.  I even got patterns organized as to when kind (baby, Xmas, general).

Now, I keep my collections on the computer...my music collection that is...LOL!

LadyEllen -> RE: Anyone watching Hoarders on A & E (12/22/2009 9:20:12 AM)

I was married to a hoarder. We moved into the flat (apartment) where I now live in 1990 and by 1992 it was full. Literally you had to tip toe through the piles of stuff "that will be useful one day". If I tried to tidy up, even if I moved anything, there would be a storm of protest that it wasnt her fault, the place was too small etc.

We moved into a three bedroom house in 1997, complete with cellar. The first two or three years were great - so much space! After that it deteriorated rapidly until I left in 2002. Nowadays the cellar is packed from floor to ceiling, wall to wall with stuff and every room is filled with even more stuff - the dining table is two feet high with stuff.

Particularly annoying are the empty boxes, squashed flat, the newspapers and magazines tied in bundles or stuffed in boxes, the four foot high pile of egg boxes, the empty pop bottles and jars. It is after all my house too - if ever I wanted to sell up I couldnt as no one in their right mind, upon viewing it, would want to buy.

Despite appearances at times, I like tidy - I'm not so bothered about a little dirty, but I cant stand mess and disorder. Clearly we were a poor match on this ground if no others. Perhaps equally clearly we each have our own little psychological issues with it all.

E

- maybe- but the goat was inside the house lounging on the floor.   I am sure the goat did not drag in all the clutter that - my god- there is pack rat - and then there is - garbage dump.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Anyone watching Hoarders on A & E (12/23/2009 6:53:13 AM)

That show is like a train wreck.  You know it's gonna be awful but but you HAVE to look.  I sell real estate for a living and Ive handled some estates where the deceased was a hoarder.  The worst one ever, I had to put on old clothes and go in a window.  From there, I crawled across the top of bags of I knew not what to get to a door where I slipped down into the hallway.  There was a cat skeleton on the dining room table.  You get the idea.  The heirs that lived just a few miles away had NO idea that mamaw was living in such conditions.  I told them that the house would prob have to be demoed and hauled off because the garbage had soaked into the wood floors and frame.  Needless to say, I didnt accept the listing.  Had to take a shower when I got home.  Ive been in others but that was the worst.

Rule -> RE: Anyone watching Hoarders on A & E (12/23/2009 9:26:58 AM)

I am a bit of a hoarder. The biggest problems are space and a lack of order. There is a pile of books and other important stuff between my bed and desk. Can't miss it, but I hardly know what is in it. I think that it has been four to six years since my sister helped me to make my room livable again, but since then it has deteriorated.
The good news is that a friend has offered to come on January 16 to help me with my room.

There are also three empty cherry jars that I have to throw away. I can do that; I have done so before.

I do not have a cat skeleton because I did not have a cat.
