House Democrat to switch parties
Posted: Tuesday, December 22, 2009 11:20 AM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: Congress, Democrats, Republicans
From NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
Earlier this year, Democrats benefited from a party switch when Arlen Specter defected from the Republican Party, giving Dems (eventually) 60 votes in the Senate.

Now, as the year ends, Republicans are benefitting from a party switch of their own. First Read has confirmed a Politico report that Alabama freshman Rep. Parker Griffith (D) is switching to the GOP.

Before the defection, Democratas held a 258-177 majority in the House, so this move would reduce that advantage by one seat.

However, it doesn't change the health-care vote. Griffith voted against the House health-care bill. He also voted against the stimulus earlier this year.

This congressional seat is a conservative-leaning one. John McCain won Griffith's district in last year's presidential election, 61%-38%; Griffith won it narrowly, 51%-48%.

They're starting to see the handwriting on the wall. Arlen Specter has a "zero" chance of being re-elected.
The upcomming election in 2010 is shaping up to be a real slaughter for the Democrats.
It's not so much that people want to "join" the Republicans it's that they want to "get away" from the Democrats.

Not only will others be switching partys, some democrats have decided already not to seek another term in 2010. Popeye is right. The hand writing is on the wall.

So............... let me break out my calculator.

The Democrats are now down to a 257-178 majority in the House.

Yes, the hand writing is definitely on the wall.

I wish you and your fellow Republicans all the best in picking up the 40 seats you need.

Controlling the Senate will be quite enough. Specter, Reid and Dodd in particular are in big trouble.

Good riddance, who needs him. If he doesn't vote with Democrats then he is of no use to the party. I would not waste too much time politicking in that state anyway.

Barring a catastrophe, it's not likely the democrats lose the house next year. Lose a lot of their cushion? Sure. That's probably inevitable. But a 42-vote swing? Not much chance of that. This not not 1994. There is no Newt Gingrich, there is no Bill Clinton, and the fundamental issue is going to be the economy, which will probably appear much improved by then - at least, in the eyes of the average voter.

Their risk of losing the Senate is even slimmer, although their 60-vote majority is as good as gone. But even if the republicans hold all 12 of their incumbent seats, replace all 6 retiring republican senators with republicans, and replace both retiring democrats with republicans, they'd still need to beat 9 of the remaining 16 democratic incumbents to take a 51-seat majority. If anyone would care to look over the list of 16 dems and explain which 9 of them are in serious danger, I'd be interested in hearing your reasoning. The absolute best the republicans can hope for is the slim possibility of taking back the House for 2 years, but even that looks like nothing more than a Limbaughian pipe dream at the moment.

Yes, and it was only a little over a year ago how I heard how Sarah Palin was going to push McCain over the top.

Wat difference does it make?  Before, he was a Dem voting against Obama's policies.  Now he'll be a Republican voting against them.

In 1994, the republicans picked up 56 seats. Bill Clinton's approval numbers were better than Obama's . I think that Nancy Pelosi might be flying commercial again.

I was struggling to think of a succinct way to put that. Perfect!

In the first week of December 1993, Bill Clinton's approval rating was 52%, the same as Obama's was the first week of December 2009. In the following months, Clinton was badly weakened by his poor handling of gays in the military and his disastrous bungling of health reform; Obama's shot at health reform will pass and be touted as a success by democrats next year. While teh new bill won't have helped anyone yet by that time, it won't have started to hurt anyone yet either, because the democrats have carefully timed the program to get the maximum electoral advantage. Instead of being damaged by the health care issue as they were in 94, the dems will get a boost from it. Probably slight, but a boost nevertheless.

In addition, the economy was weak and showing little or no sign of improvement in 1994; the way the democrats timed the stimulus program, the economy should be comparatively quite strong and growing in the later 2nd-early 3rd quarter of 2010. Surely you noticed the timing of the expenditures? That was no accident. People tend to let their bank accounts be their guide when voting - they pay attention to primarily two things, how well they're doing right now and what the trend line is. If the stimulus bill works the way it was intended, at the time of the 2010 midterms, most people will probably be doing better than they have in a couple of years and the trend will be positive, maybe even strongly positive. Unlike 1994.

And third, the 1994 midterms were marked by considerable scandal in the democratic-controlled House, which (rightfully) hurt the party very badly in the eyes of the voters. The House banking scandal and the Post office scandal were serious ethical failings, and in the case of the Post office scandal, criminal offenses as well. If I recall correctly, at least one democratic representative would up going to jail. People were outraged at democratic congressional leaders for allowing this to happen and for being way too slow to respond, and the republicans capitalized on it by painting the democrats as a party that could not be trusted and themselves as an ethical alternative. Given what we know now, there won't be anything like that for the republicans to grab hold of next year.

So, the perfect storm that came together in 1994 to give the republicans a 54-vote swing just isn't on the weather map this year. Typically, you'll see swings of anywhere from 5-8 seats all the way to 20 or so, with wider margins in particularly volatile times. 2010 won't be a 4 or 5-seat swing, I agree. It may well go 25 or 30. But if all goes the way it looks like it probably will, it's not likely to be much more than that. Best bet right now is that the dems lose ground in both chambers, but keep their majority in the Senate and probably in the House as well. If they lose the House, it won't be by much, and they'll get it back in 2012. You have to remember that as much as people still hate the democrats, they hate the republicans even more. That probably won't change anytime soon. Bush and Cheney made sure of that.

Why that's very nice of you, RML.  Actually, that's about the average swing with a President below 50% approval.  Can we count on your support?

Don't blame Pelosi?

hhhmm was it not she that asked/demanded a larger plane that could make the trip non-stop? Let's see at the cost stated of $60,000 one way was it (less mistaken here). Verses maybe a security detail while landing and re-fueling as need be? She did not object too awful much to this taking place now did she? Did she refuse it? Did she say "no that's okay a security detail when refueling will be okay?". Which could have been done HAD she or even any in Washington elected to do so.

Yes, let's spend that enormous amount of money for that plane to fly her back and forth verses a detal of security forces that are already available and on duty and use that money elsewhere where it is actually NEEDED .

Yep, our tax dollars at work there

Races to watch in 2010

I would not count Arlen Specter out, it's pretty early. As far as I'm concerned if anybody is going to vote for the GOP they are going from the fire into the frying pan
