Public Opinion Snapshot: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming
By the evidence of recently released polling data, this strategy is failing on all fronts. For example, despite all the publicity around the hacked e-mails of some British climate scientists, the public remains resoundingly convinced that global warming is primarily caused by human actions rather than naturally occurring forces. In a just-released NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 74 percent endorsed this view, compared to just 20 percent who backed the opposing statement that global warming is traceable primarily to naturally occurring forces rather than human actions.

Brain -> RE: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming (12/22/2009 4:30:01 PM)

I forgot to make a comment when I posted this so I just want to say briefly it's good to know people aren't so easily fooled by little tricks like the stolen e-mails. Most people believe legitimate science so maybe there is some hope for the future after all.

They didn't accomplish much in Copenhagen but people are just going to have to keep fighting and negotiating to get support and get people engaged on this issue. I don't know if global warming is caused by man or not but I don't see anything wrong with moving towards a green economy and not polluting the planet. Why shouldn't polluters move to a green economy? Why do we need to pollute the planet just because Exxon and Chevron and the coal companies are too lazy to change their businesses?

servantforuse -> RE: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming (12/22/2009 5:21:50 PM)

They didn't accomplish anything in Copenhagen, except burning through a million gallons of jet fuel to get the private jets over there, and gasoline for the 1200 limos. I think it might have been good for my Conoco/Philips stock.

Brain -> RE: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming (12/22/2009 5:42:13 PM)

ok, so you're implying that we shouldn't even bother trying, well obviously I don't agree with you if that's what you're saying.

servantforuse -> RE: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming (12/22/2009 5:56:56 PM)

This whole thing is about getting money from the west, and giving it to 3rd world countries. How many windmills do you think Africa will build with the 10 billion we sent there way to solve global warming ?

Fellow -> RE: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming (12/23/2009 1:10:36 AM)

What does general public know about global warming? Basically they know what the "specialists" like Al Gore have fed them.
Historically public majority supports highly publicized point of view. Warming theory opponents even in science world have difficulties to publish  their views as the whole problem has been made a political issue.

This question could also be reversed.

We seem to have a lot of experts, especially on here, that know global warming is a fraud.

I have not asked for their scientific credentials but I'm sure they must have them.

I'm sure you'll be happy to give me a million dollar grant to post my credentials[8|]

Which again implies the fallacious argument that scientists are somehow personally benefiting from research grants other than the opportunity to study the subject concerned.

So...........as I keep asking, without a valid response, show me some verification of the claim that this is all a money-making fraud on the part of scientists and those who believe they are right.

You continue to ignore or are unaware of the battle for tenure, prestige and status amonst scientists in the research communities as an impetus to seek favorable grants. How much disfavor does a scientist gain if he fails to bring in research grants to his institution? Quite a lot I think. Research is greased by money. Administrator salaries are tied to it. Boards of Directors pay special attention. Status goes to him/her who brings it in.

Well golly gee Brain, I didn't know that this was a "conservative vs liberal" issue? When did that start?
And what about all of us Independants out here? What do "we" believe?
And that phrase, "resoundingly convinced" sounds like someone is trying to "convince" someone else doesn't it?
I'm very "liberal" on many issues but that doesn't mean I'm stupid! This is very obviously "damage control" meant to shore up that farce of a meeting in Denmark. Just like a car salesman or a holy roller giving you the "hard sell."
I'd be willing to put this on the ballot as a binding resolution in all 50 states and "let the people decide", problem with that?
Your "side" should win it by 74% to 20% right?

mnottertail -> RE: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming (12/23/2009 12:10:19 PM)

oh, what are you surprisingly liberal on?

submittous -> RE: Public Rejects Conservative Views on Global Warming (12/23/2009 12:13:57 PM)

We have a few choices on this issue about who to believe and their motivations... we can believe climatologists and atmospheric scientists who have often made a life study of the subject and they overwhelming have one position on the issue or we can believe hired scientists mostly from other fields who are being paid by fossil fuel producers to publish articles in opposition or we can believe self serving radio talk show hosts and associated politicians who are using the publicity for personal gain. I'd be putting my money on th real science being done, but that must just be my prejudice showing.

The argument that it all is a giant conspiracy to get government funding is just silly.... Private industry pays big time bribes for bought science, if peoples motive was money that's where they'd go.... example: smoking 'science' of the 60's.

Saying Al Gore is into GCC for money is as silly... a millionaire at birth, with government, business and social connections if he wanted to make the most money he'd be on the board of oil producers and coal fired power plants, he'd be like Bush senior was on the boards of investment banks all over Wall Street. At least come up with a plausible storyline

If this is all about power and prestige in academic circles, does it only seem to come out in the climatology world? Why don't we have horror stories about incoming meteors from astronomers? Coming volcanoes in west Des Moines from earth scientists? Evolving man eating gold fish from Biologists? the coming Black Hole in North Dakota from Physicists? and so on? why?,,,, (rhetorical question).. because it isn't so. The scientific method makes stars of people who find fraud in science, conspiracy is always possible but not for long.... recall 'cold fusion'?, matter of months and faked experiments debunked....

I am very aware that lots of people don't want change of any kind, and being responsible in any part for the problems we have created is unpopular but when it is reality we all have to put on our big boy pants and man-up to it. We need to start to clean up our mess for our descendants.

I'm not ignoring it, I just think it is a weak argument to presuppose those who invest their life's work in science are more concerned with their prestige and status than the work itself.

Hey, there's my buddy Rule!
You know Rule, noone likes to be "had."
You buy a car and afterwards find out that you paid a thousand bucks too much for it, your brother-in-law "borrows" a thousand from you and doesn't repay you, or you get stood up on a date.
It's the same with all this "global warming" scam. Can you imagine how "believers" felt when it became known that all this mess really was,..."junk science?"
They must have been Crushed!
Would you "loan" your brother-in-law another thousand bucks? Ask the lady who stood you up for "another" date or buy another car from the dealor who charged you too much for that car?
It's hard to admit it to ourselves when we are wrong or made a foolish mistake, it's a big wound to the ego!
Don't worry, "time heals all wounds." It's always better to admit to yourself that you did make a mistake which is very human and then move on.
