$450 million a day, what a waste. I'm surprised the guy has the courage to tell the truth. Maybe by doing this video it helps him not to get posttraumatic stress disorder.

AMAZING SPEECH BY WAR VETERAN

Our real enemy is not the ones living in a distant land whose names or policies we don't understand; The real enemy is a system that wages war when it's profitable, the CEOs who lay us off our jobs when it's profitable, the Insurance Companies who deny us Health care when it's profitable, the Banks who take away our homes when it's profitable. Our enemies are not several hundred thousands away. They are right here in front of us

Yes, he's a bright young man.

Did you notice both Democrats and Republicans depicted in the video?

Yep, an amazing and insightful speech. In a real democracy that encourages real free speech that would be required viewing in school.

Might I ask why?  If you can tell Me why this person's opinion has more value than those who serve their country without these opinions, why does this particular one carry more weight?

Yes I did, and it's very appropriate considering Obama is continuing both wars and both parties are bipartisan virtually always on military spending.

The bipartisan consensus on U.S. military spending
Global Security has taken the Fiscal Year 2008 U.S. budget and prepared a new chart illustrating the most significant and under-discussed political fact in the United States, one that substantially affects every other issue:

Our military spending exceeds the rest of the world's spending combined, and we spend almost 10 times what the second-place country, China, spends. "Only" about $150 billion of the total U.S. amount is attributable to the two active wars we're fighting, in Iraq and Afghanistan. Thus, even if one wants to excludes those amounts, the basic picture remains the same. Nor do these amounts include the billions of dollars in military aid we give to fund the armies of other countries, such as Israel and Egypt, which alone comprise substantial portions of those countries' defense budgets.

And it's also true because, even though we were already spending many times more than everyone else in the world during the mid-1990s, the explosion in our military spending over the last 10 years has far outpaced the rest of the world, resulting in a larger gap than ever before:

What a wonderful and insightful reply LadyPact...Brain loves to quote the fanatics… brothers in arms I think… in this world rather then the majority.

In the next 5 years or so, many of the men who fought in these wars will be back in the States, working as prison guards, cops, security specialists and the like.

Many will be bitter as vinegar, as angry as a hornet's nest, because they'll know, as previous generations of veterans learned, that they fought, not for the people -- not even for the constitution -- but for the wealthy rulers who could not care less about their lives or their loss.

What will this mean for U.S. society? How will it impact the future?/snip

I have to agree with you there, Butch.

I'm not going to say for a second that some come back after serving in places around the globe and do become bitter.  Heck, I'll even admit that some become prison guards and police officers.  (I never knew the latter to be a terrible thing, since they then continue to serve the public here at home.)  At the same time, some remain career military because they believe in what they are doing.  Others go into the occupations that the military trained them in to begin with such as nursing, communications, and a lot of other walks of life.

Sure, there are those out there who only want to condemn our military forces.  Even some who have served within them.  That's not the case for everyone.  Some of them actually care about the humanitarian part of this particular mission.  For anybody who doesn't think there is one, I'm going to promise that they don't spend any time actually talking to a soldier, and are instead searching the net for articles and speeches that further their own agenda.

Close, but it insinuates that all veterans have come to understand this reality, which is far off the mark. I would have expressed it this way:

Ill buy that.

Tho- this time- a big part of it is just how bad the economy gets.   And the heavy handed govt itself.   There is a restlessness in the military.   Recall that Obama was all about "change" and bringing the troops home.

Obama is just doing what the powers that be are instructing him to do.

But it's obvious that many here believe that Obama is the true power... and that is truly naive, in my most humble opinion.

Bingo.

And the next president - the same will apply.   Unless something major happens.

At the risk of contradicting your humble opinion, the idea that there are "powers that be" is utterly naive.

There are many competing interests that lobby for support in our government.

To suggest there are certain interests that have control of the government is just buying into paranoid conspiracy theories.
