18.5 billion? That wont be enough to cover the legal costs to fight the greenies.

I have never quite understood how nuclear power can be considered a clean energy source when you have radioactive waste to dispose of:

simple, no one ever sees it and they spend millions (like the coal industry) telling us all those people opposing it hate America and freedom.

You shouldn't.  If you want to make nuclear feasible, recycle the spent fuel by simply reenriching it, and reusing it.

Then why isn't this being done and why have we had this huge controversy over Yucca Mountain?

The article mentions it's a very small amount, and that this is actually a 2005 program that's just getting started.

That's a very good question. Why do all these other nations with nuclear power not have the waste storage problem? They recycle their spent fuel. Why do we not do that - we who developed nuclear power in the first place? I have no idea.

I saw a show about this either on the discovery channel or National Geographic and they said using a small lake about a mile wide and 50 feet deep you can supply the world with enough energy for a year, and apparently without pollution. I need to read more about this technology.

Hydrogen fusion power | Technology Futures

ITER is an international consortium that is planning to build a 500 megawatt fusion reactor by 2016. Fusion power is the holy grail of the energy industry because it uses relatively inexpensive fuel (hydrogen), creates little contaminated nuclear waste, and can generate large amounts of power.

Advanced engineering is underway, and one of the goals of the project is to use pre-qualified and off the shelf materials and components. The ITER fusion reactor will generate ten times more power than it needs to maintain the fusion reaction.

A usable fusion power plant would replace coal and oil power plants, and would have a dramatic impact on CO2 emissions, which may contribute to global warming. Fusion plants would also be pollution free. China, which uses a lot of coal that is causing pollution problems, is a partner in the project.

While I admit that my knowledge of fusion technology is about a decade out of date, as I recall no one was anywhere near building a fusion reactor. They were doing some fiddling with magnetic bottles that could contain plasma but that's about as far as they'd gotten.

If someone manages to build an actual functional fusion reactor, it'd probably be front page news in every paper in the world.

Globally, discharged spent fuel waste from nuclear power facilities will increasingly become a concern as many of the countries do not have a clear policy on the long term spent fuel management. Though many of the nuclear power producing countries store spent nuclear fuel in temporary pool storage facilities, lack of adequate temporary facilities will demand usage of storage casks for long-term safe storage. Thousands of tons of new nuclear fuel have been added to the nuclear power reactors every year and the discharge of spent fuel is also increasing significantly. The annual discharge of spent fuel is estimated to be about 10,000 tHM currently. This report estimates that the increasing spent fuel discharge and lack of adequate capacity in pool storage will necessitate increased dry storage capacity in nuclear power producing countries.

Nuclear waste storage and disposal is a political problem above all else. There are methods that are very safe but the anti-energy zealots seem to hold a veto over every reasonable solution that is offered, Yucca Mountain being a prime example of this.

Musicmystery -> RE: Loan Program May Stir Dormant Nuclear Industry (12/25/2009 9:54:54 AM)

I don't think it's the "anti-energy zealots" opposing Yucca Mt.--it seems the people who live there aren't wild about the idea.

Well, that should be a private sector issue anyway. It would be for a fiscal conservative I think. Yanno, free ride and all that.

The 'greenies' don't like living near windmills either. They're answer is to put us all back in time about 100 years.

pahunkboy -> RE: Loan Program May Stir Dormant Nuclear Industry (12/25/2009 11:51:56 AM)

We are not going to have ample power- the grid is woefully deficient for future needs.

One type of energy will not solve the problem.

We have to use a variety of methods.  People expect power to happen when they plug something in.

solar can not deliver enough.  I never seen a welder weld metal using solar.

Probably because there's little of the power grid that runs off solar electricity in the first place. You may well have seen a welder using hydroelectric power to provide the electrical component through his gear, though.
Besides, that equipment works by burning gas, and it isn't that thirsty for electricity on the first place. Stick a solar farm on the roof of a small manufacturing plant, and you probably could run the welding gear off that quite happily, at least until it starts to rain.

pahunkboy -> RE: Loan Program May Stir Dormant Nuclear Industry (12/25/2009 1:16:51 PM)

They want to build an extra nuke plant here- well an hour from here in Berwick.   I am not against it.   Providing it is done right.
