If all we achieve is delaying and inconveniencing Iran whilst stirring up more radical Muslim attacks on us then one has to question the proposal for air strikes and if one is serious about the threat one must consider escalation - with the potential for even greater fallout of even greater impact on us.

If we bomb Iran's nuclear facilities, are we willing to use tactical nuclear weapons to protect our troups in the area?

The U.S. needs to take a pass on this one and let our European allies and Israel handle it.
They can have Spain lead the assault.

What would be in it for Europe?

What would be in it for the U.S.?

believe it would strengthen the hand of the reactionary right among the clerics and also the hand of the Revolutionary Guard who are making the Ahmadinijad (sp?) government look liberal.

Perhaps, but since I'm not (please re-read my now edited post) seriously proposing that we launch a missle into downtown Iran, the point is moot.

A report in today's NYT suggests the possibility of internal rebellion is being sytematically quelched. I would not hold out much hope. I have a lot of sympathy for the Iranian people. They have a long and proud heritage from what little I know of it. Geopolitics never ceases to be a mess, hey?

Whether the Iranian people will rebel or not I have no idea but the possibility remains. They are getting fed up with the restrictions their government places upon them. Very often, trying to crush dissent only creates more.

I'll give you that. I should have written that, among the Islamic extremists ruling Iran with their iron fists that is the case.

Not all Muslims are extremists by any stretch of the imagination, I fully agree.

Actually, it seems to me that the orthodoxy runs Iran (fanatics are never good at running anything), who then use the fanatics to further their agenda. Orthodoxy can be damned near impossible to reason with but even they are not totally nuts. If given enough incentive, they can be made to see reason.

I suspect you are too intelligent to be serious with that statement. Don't disabuse me of that thought, please.

If Russia launches a nuclear attack against us or one of our allies, should they not expect a response? The escalation scenario is scary but it has always been a part of the MAD policy. I agree that it is by no means a perfect policy to puruse against Iran but our choices are limited.

Launching an attack against Irans nuclear facilities isn't enough.  If we go in there, we also have to hit their ability to communicate as well as ANY naval forces they have.  Including tiny fishing boats.  If not, within hours they could easily mine the straight of anameIcan'tspell, begin targeting our ships with their antiship missles, and get word to operatives still within Iraq.  If they mine the straight, oil prices worldwide would instantly go up drastically. Their operatives in Iraq and probably Afganistan would make the pretty warm wars there turn red hot.  And they would assuredly let hezbollah off the leash. And I suspect that Russia would be more than happy to let us pick a fight with Iran.  It further weakens and spreads thin an already war weary miltary and puts us in a fight we probably couldn't really win.  If oil prices skyrocket, exactly how long do you think our (or just about anyones) economy could hold up right now?  America is out of money, weak, and tired.  Iran is holding all the cards.  They're going to get the bomb unless Israel is willing to sacrifice a large chunk of their airforce to stop it.  And even then, the mining of the straight and hezbollah type actions would probably still happen.  All we can hope for at this point is that they have enough sense not to lob the sucker at Isreal.
