Jesus, now what? A man with reported ties to al Qaeda has set off some sort of explosive device on a plane bound from Amsterdam to Detroit. Some networks are reporting it just fireworks, others are reporting that it was  some sort of bomb.

Isn't having to leave Amsterdam in order to go to Detroit bad enough in and of itself, without having to get blown to bits as well?

quote:

(CNN) -- A passenger ignited fireworks Friday at the end of a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, a Delta Air Lines spokeswoman said. The passenger was immediately subdued, according to Susan Elliott, spokeswoman for Delta, Northwest's parent company. The incident resulted in some minor injuries, Elliott said.

Al Qaeda or Three Stooges?

OK, NBC News is reporting that it was a bomb, and the man has told authorities that he was associated with al Qaeda and that he was trying to blow up the plane. What a jerk.

Arpig -> RE: Was that Plan B, or, like, Plan Z? (12/25/2009 4:26:00 PM)

Thank god he wasn't more efficient...a terrorist attack with only "minor injuries" there's some good news

So, that is what meatcleaver has been up to.

He was a terrorist and he was associated with al-Qaeda, and not the Amish or the Quakers?

He wasn't a Catholic or a Mormon or a Jehovahs Witness?

That really surprises me.

NBC is also reporting that it was definitely some sort of bomb, but they're not really specific on what the nature of it was. There just don't seem to be a lot of confirmed details out there at the moment. Apparently he was attempting to detonate something in his lap, and either it fizzled or the passenger next to him intervened. Sounds like there'll be a fair number of incomplete and sometimes conflicting reports for a while, and we may not know the real story until sometime tomorrow. Whatever it was, I'm just glad everyone seems to be OK.

It would appear that Nigerians aren't any better at setting off explosives than they are at creating believable profiles.

Actually, the guy CLAIMED to be affiliated with Al-Qaeda.  I doubt that he was.  He managed to detonate a bomb weak enough to injure himself and maybe one other person.  Had he set it off over the Atlantic, there would have been no rescue facilities available.  He sounds like an idiot wannabe.

Snarky note - the injured person was taken to medical facilities in Ann Arbor... looks like Detroit may be the only metropolitan center in the US without a medical facility trusted enough to handle this.

The TSA made the usual pronouncements, but the bottom line is that this was a failure of Dutch security, not US, and I don't know how much ability we will have to improve the situation.

Well, personally I've had enough. After this I'm not sending them any more money, no matter how many e-mails they send me.

NBC is also reporting that he was on a terrorist watch list, but not on the "no-fly" list. If that's true, I'll be very curious to learn how that works.

That's some crazy shit, Panda.  I'm glad it fizzled, but hope there was enough power in the blast to fry his bits.

Maybe something good will come of this. Maybe, just maybe, President Obama will really start to use the words "war against terror".. So far he didn't want to hurt anyones feelings.

A senior Department of Homeland Security official said that the materials Mr. Abdulmutallab had on him were “more incendiary than explosive,” and that he had tried to ignite them to cause a fire as the airliner was approaching Detroit.

Looks like the young man was an amateur  (depressed confused individual, perhaps acting alone) and not really connected to a terrorist group. The organizations know how to make bombs.

I was wondering how long it would take before someone found a way to tie this to Obama.

With a no-fly list, he should have been stopped from boarding the plane. My guess is he is they put people who know terrorists on such a list.

The worrying thing is that he was able to board a plane with something hidden on his body. I read it was a through flight from Nigeria, so maybe Amsterdam was just a pick up point. I dont know if anyone could get past the Dutch customs with a suspicious pacakge on them, due to drug searches if nothing else.

I dont know if any of you remember this, but here in the UK we had a situation were terrorists plotted to get on to US bound flights with explosives hidden in drinks. This was back in 2006, so the idea is hardly new. I am just glad no one was hurt.

The same old suspects are all too predictable RML.

Actually, I think that is what set him off. He had gotten on the wrong plane and fallen asleep. When he woke up and heard the pilot say they were getting ready to land in Detroit, he decided death was preferable.

Now, as a resident of Michigan...I think that is funny.

In no way did I tie this incedent to Obama. I did wonder if he would now use the words 'war on terror'.
