Well, this is probably one of the strangest holiday traditions I've ever heard of. For the second year in a row, Herr Popenfuhrer has been attacked while performing midnight mass. By the same woman who hurled herself at him last year. Do you suppose that at some point, his security detail will consider possibly... you know... not letting her attend anymore? At least on Christmas Eve? quote: The pope was not injured when an assailant, identified as Susanna Maiolo, lunged at him during mass Thursday night, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said. That's awesome. Well, didn't this pope recently kill all the unborn babies in limbo when he decided limbo wasn't a real place anymore? And didn't the church recently declare excessive wealth a sin? Seems to me she's just trying to get rid of the sinful.

Stipped down to it's basics this is nothing more than an attack upon and old man. But since he is not any old man, I'm betting they hang on to her a bit longer this time. I'm also willing to bet that the Pope pays her a visit and forgives her (but they'll still keep her locked up for a while).

If she would have done the same thing to a mullah, she would have had her head cutoff already. Attacks on Christians seem to be ok with some. Just a big joke.

I just don't see the humor in attacking the pope at Mass on Christmas day. Maybe I'm missing something.

The Pope isn't just any old person. If this was just about attacking an old man, she could have done that while standing in line, I'm sure. It seems far more likely to think she is attacking the office (or suffering from some psychosis of trying to defend it from the occupant). If she gets through again next year, maybe we should see an omen or something.

I am Catholic ( A fallen away, heretical, willfully disobedient pagan-friendly one, but still) and yet I thought it was comical. And I bet money most of my friends in the clergy think so too. To some on here, it is ok and a joke to attack the pope. I don't see the humor in assaulting anyone, especially an older person.

Oh, relax, Servant, it's just a pope. If worse comes to worst, they can always get another one. They've got a procedure in place and everything. Besides, at his age, he's not going to be around long anyway. Going out in a blaze of glory, wrestled to the ground and bludgeoned to death by a passionate young Italian woman in an uncontrollable frenzy, beats the hell out of dying in bed and having some poor old nun find you stiff as a board when she brings you your oatmeal.

I heard it was some catholic with extreme belief that just wanted to touch the holy father and so it wasn't an attack at all but a religious zealot. Apparently she only got past the Popes official Swiss guard because they were busy getting dressed to disguise themselves and fit in with the crowd. Those guards have great undercover skills you'll find a couple hiding as jokers in each standard deck of cards.
