I have an old (20 yr.) Brother in a cabinet, and a portable Singer. I find that I use the Singer more often. The Singer was purchased about 3-4 years ago at Target for about $100.

Most of my sewing is lightweight construction and repairs to light and medium weight fabrics. This probably hasn't been very helpful to the OP.

When I had time for quilting, I used the Brother more, since the work area is larger.

I hand-sew, and my stitches are small and neat and even

(finally....) I just finished making a cover for my iPod. It's a dinosaur. I'm a nerd, and proud.
Sewing by hand is definitely more time-consuming, but since I only sew to keep occupied when I can't sleep - and I have wicked insomnia - it works for me as a hobby. I spend less at the fabric store because projects take longer (though the iPodosaurus Rex only took a couple hours to make).

note: just realized this input was totally irrelevant and didn't help the OP - sorry! I guess I just wanted to brag about the iPodosaurus Rex. It's adorable.

My father is a Singer man. He owned some Singer stores until our culture pretty much stoped sewing. I have three machines. One a 40's or 50's featherweight Singer, goes back and forth and I love it to bits.

Then my pops gave me a bernina from the 70's and it dod embroidery, zig sig and stuff but the plug blows out sparks, frightening. Then recently he gave me a second hand Singer machine form the 70's I am guessing and it is lovely, love it. Called a Sensation.

My dad is retired. He fixes machines for extra bucks. If you have any technical q's send me CMail and I will ask him if you like.

*Pulls out easybake oven. Step right up, step right up. Cherry, Chocolate, Vanilla, all pre-made. This pink one looks like a shirt, these could be cute lil capri pants and taste! So sweet! The vanilla boxers will be ready soon as I add the bonus icing!

I was once a professional seamstress and have sewn on many brands of machines. My favorite is Singer, they have a precision of placement of stitches that is not rivalled by any other machine I have used.

A few years ago I sold my industrial Singer straight stitcher and industrial Singer overlocker....I had given up on my dream of being a designer/garment maker....not enough money to make a living without being in the right place and knowing the right people.

I bought a Janome, computerised and not what I had intended when I went into the shop, being on sale helped $250 off leaving it at $850. It has a precise stitch and sits firmly on a table...no jumping around when I go fast. I did buy an overlovker at the same time but I was living by the sea, on the second sand dune the sea was so close lol and the discs and cutting blades rusted making it a very messy and lumpy seam, that one went to the dump, even the local repairman didn't want it.

Singer is my first recomendation, Janome my second. Good luck and happy sewing.

Thanks everyone for continuing to post ideas and recommendations. It looks like I'll be going with a Singer to start. It's a toss up between a reconditioned machine I found at a local shop and a new one at Target.

*Ron....I have a feeling you weren't asking for my help with your "vagina cozy" design, creative as it may be

this slave's personal fantasy machine that she drools over from time to time is the new Bernina 8 series. it is ridiculously priced and could only imagine having it if she ran a dress shop where there was work already contracted to pay for it!

(this slave has been creating her own designs and sewing casual outfits, bathing suits, lingerie, costumes, formal gowns, etc. since 7th grade.)

until then...this slave plugs along on the superb Bernina 830 mom purchased in 1974. Bernina 830 is one of those rare and happy mechanical occurences where the manufacturer simply got everything right (kind of like a 1957 Chevrolet!). These metal and mechanical marvels purr along as smoothly today as when they first left the dealer showroom...as long as you keep current with the maintenance!!! this slave had a Singer portable for a few years before she inherited the Bernina, and the differences are stark and amazing.

you can pick up a second hand 830 on e-bay for $355 at the moment, it's well worth the investment, from this slave's experience.

LOL....."vagina cozy" reminds me of something my mom used to crochet a long time ago. She called them "Peter Heaters", and they were basically a long tube with a little pouch attached that she gave as gag gifts to all the male friends and relatives in her life. She made them out of scrap yarn, in all colors of the rainbow, lol.
