purepleasure -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (12/28/2009 4:22:07 AM)

Termy, I'm using electric space heaters with thermostats, each was approximately $40.  My home is a 1250 sf. 2 BR ranch with full finished basement.  I have 1 in the LR set at 73F, 1 in the bathroom and directly across from the smaller BR set at 75F, 1 in the larger BR set at 70F, and one in the kitchen set at 73F.  There is also one in the basement apt. set at 70F.

To replace JUST the gas heat is in excess of $4,000.  When I replaced the gas hot water, was over $1,600.

Unfortunately, in my area of the country, the regulatory caps are being lifted in January, with a 30% increase to be expected.  I'll let you know how badly my electric bill is affected.

And yes, at the moment, it's actually more economical to heat with electric than gas.  I live in a temperate area of the U.S., in South eastern PA.

I got rid of gas about 4.5 years ago. I have a 3500 sq ft home, and I don't use most of it, so when I closed it as a B&B, I switched to electric space heaters. I would guess that I save on average over $1000 a year from dumping the gas. My electric bills run $100-250 during the year...$100 in the spring and fall, $150 in the winter, and $250 in the summer.

I do wish I had better insulation, most of the house was built in the early 1900's and it's a drafty barn of a place! But I close off the suite I use, and turn on the space heaters in whatever rooms I will be using that day. Works very, very well for me.

Jesus Crist superstar. You guys makes me jealous with your gas and electricity charges. My equipment is all state of the art and isolation is a good as it can get in a house from 1860. I pay nothing for firewood and use that as much as i can. Still the electricity bill alone knocks me back at least 300 $ a month. If i lived in Norway that would be 50 $ a month. Just the difference in the charge per Kw/hour[:'(]

Do you  plan to switch electric companies?

PPL doesn't seem to be clear on what the new rate is.

I'm staying with PP&L.  I know what to expect with their service.  I would HATE for a new supplier to not be able to supply my household with electricity in the middle of winter.  I'm willing to pay a little more to have the peace of mind.

LaTigresse -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (12/29/2009 11:00:59 AM)

Zero, zilch, nada...

I paid for my winter heating cost in September when I bought pellets for the pellet burner. They cost me just under $300.00. That is for the whole winter. The only thing LP is used for is the dryer and if someone forgets to fill the pellet burner and the furnace kicks on. I topped off the LP tank in August for about $ 180.00. That would last over a year but he occasionally stops by to check it and keep it full, so it never even comes close to empty.

Our electric runs about $ 130.00 on average a month, going as low as 90ish or as high as 140ish this last August due to AC. Given that most everything, including the water heater and kitchen stove are electric, I can live with it.

velvetears -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (12/29/2009 12:32:30 PM)

i have oil heat and just paid $390.00 for 150 gallons this should last 3 to 4 weeks depending on the temperature. Right now it is windy and in the teens.

well when they say increase- do they mean for the electric or for it to be piped in?

another carrier offers a rate lock and that is very tempting.

purepleasure -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (12/30/2009 1:23:43 PM)

pahunkboy, the way I understand it, is PPL will be handling the billing and they will still be in the loop.  how the electricity is coming from other sources i'm not entirely clear on.  I do know that some of my co-workers will have Dominion as the supplier, and PPL as the "clearinghouse".

It sounds like a huge clusterfu*k, IMO.

It would suck for anyone that does switch to end up with billing from PPL as the final source, and the new company as the power supplier.

Hillwilliam -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (12/31/2009 8:19:43 AM)

got about 2200 SF to heat and the gas bill was $78.

housesub4you -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (12/31/2009 11:26:38 AM)

We pay nothing, whenever our house gets a little cold, we just call one of our local elected officials and have them stop by, they have enough hot air to warm our house on the coldest of days  [:D]

I have a question, I'm new to using propane for heat & cooking. Now here's the deal. I had them deliver 50 gallons today, which was a fight in itself since they don't like to deliver less then 100 gallons & I didn't have the money for 100, anyhoooo He told me that 50 gallons will last me 2 weeks if I'm lucky. I'm home MAYBE 3 days a month if I'm lucky, the heat is set on about 60, and I'm not home to use the stove or the hot water, how long should 50 gallons last me? When I moved in there on 11/14 there was 30 gallons in the tank & I guess I still had some left when they put the 50 in, I wasn't able to get home to see what was left. Should I get at LEAST 2 months out of it since I'm not really using it? At least that would give me 2 months to save up for 100 - 150 gallons. Oh, and if it helps weather wise, I live just outside of Tulsa, OK.

popeye1250 -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (12/31/2009 11:13:02 PM)

I just opened my electric bill, $84.
It includes heat and electricity. In the summer a/c and it's very consistant all year round.
Glad I got out of New Hampshire!

It depends on the size of the home you are heating and how well insulated it is, LTD. Really, the water heater and stove are negligible compared to heating in winter months, although you could save $$ by turning off/ down the water heater when you aren't home.

MasterJeff11 -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (1/1/2010 3:43:37 PM)

Electric heat (in floor heating) Cost $400+ for the month of November. Have to hate those Canadian Winters.

Actually I have an 18x80 mobile home that holds the heat pretty well from what I judged the few times that I have been there. I'm able to view my electric bill online & I'm averaging $1.18US per day + .84 a day in charges. I'm figuring next time I get home if I close all the bedroom doors and centralize the heated area that should help maybe?  I don't know, I'm just looking for ways to conserve, especially since I'm not there to use it. Any ideas on what the absolute lowest that I can turn the thermostat to that will keep everything safe, but not use alot of heat? Someone told me 55 would be ok, can I go less than that or would that not be recommended?
Sorry for all the questions, but for the last 2 years I lived in an apartment, and 5 years prior to that I lived in a truck, so I'm just learning all this fun stuff again.
Lauri

WyldHrt -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (1/1/2010 7:14:46 PM)

Hi Lauri
Definite yes to closing bedroom doors and such to centralize the heat. Setting the thermostat to 55 should be ok, but I'm not sure how much lower you can go, as I don't live in an area that gets really cold in the winter.  Hopefully, someone else will come along with a better answer for you on that.

pahunkboy -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (1/1/2010 9:22:48 PM)

Lori- you can use heat tape on the pipes.

I have a line in the back porch that I do not heat.  It broke just once.   But knowing how I am- the pipes can take alot of cold.   The bad windchill is the no no.

Lanpanic -> RE: How much was your gas bill? (1/1/2010 9:25:36 PM)

180 a month.

My town is the last to ever lose power.  Being there are 2 elderly living high rises and the river pumps here.

I wrote PA congress over this one.  I dread the new rates.  Particularly since they are so spacey on what the new charges are.
