GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Urban Meyer resigned Saturday as Florida's football coach after five seasons and two national titles because of health concerns that came to light when he suffered chest pains following the SEC championship game earlier this month.

The 45-year-old Meyer will coach his final game at the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati on New Year's Day.

Must be serious for him to quit.

Yes. Evidently, he's has chest pains, and had talked about quitting in about 5 more years, no matter what, so I guess he sees this as a sign to step down now.

UF is looking at one of the Stoops brothers to take his place, or Harbaugh from Stanford, I've read.

From what I've read, it is not life-threatening, yet it does require surgery.  He is going to stay at the school, in a non-coaching capacity.

The thought of life without Tebow was giving him pains, or that's the running joke everyone is having fun with.  Wasn't it Arizona State that got one of the Stoops?  I don't remember that working out very well.  Harbaugh?? The coaching might be ok. but i don't know if he is up to that kind of recruiting.  They are going to be stuck, trying to find  a quality replacement in time to hit the recruiting trail.

Maybe they can get Zook back?

Bob Stoops went to Arizona, and you're right, he hasn't replicated his bro's achievments at Oklahoma.

Someone on another board said maybe Bobby Bowden will pull a "Favre" and go to Florida

I knew it was one of them.

Wanna get Florida fans riled?  They have a rather revisionist outlook.  All the talk of how Tebow has won two National Championships they somehow forget that he only played a handful of plays in the first one.  If not for Chris Leak's passing (I'm not sure some of them even remember he was on the field) or the defense which was full of the seniors that Zook recruited they don't win.  Meyer was lucky to only lose 3 games the next year when they all left.  Mention those to some of the die hard fans and they start sputtering.  It's a fun sport, lol.

Coaching at a big name U is highly stressful and time-consuming.  I hope all works out for him health-wise and that he enjoys his new position.

Yeah, Zook did a lot to get some quality players there, and there's some truth in your comment regarding Leak.

I don't think they'll have trouble maintaining, but then again, I didn't think Miami or Florida State would drop off like they have, either.

Maybe they will hire Rodriguez out of Michigan.  Please. Please.

there was going to be trouble trying to maintain if Meyer stayed.  That offense was woefully lacking except for Tebow.  He was the perfect fit for Meyer and now its gone.  The defense carried them and a few of the people who stayed for one more year will be gone from that.  On the plus side maybe those off field incidents will slow down.  Discipline was a weak point for Meyer.

It's hard to tell you if like Florida, or don't, with that comment

A news report an hour ago now says that Meyers has decided to stay.  He is apparently taking an extended leave of absence.

I have no feelings one way or another for or against Florida.  The Big Ten has always been a grinder mentality.  Rodriguez is not a fit although he would seem to fit a Florida or West Coast approach to football.  If he doesn't get caught in more NCAA problems and  if he has a spectacular 2010 year, he may stay.
