Very nurturing and loving, very supportive.  We're very close, have breakfast every Sunday.  Probably spoiled the hell out of me, but I think she feels very guilty about how my father treated me and her inability to protect me from him.

My dad is an abusive alcoholic who suffers from untreated PTSD and depression stemming from his experiences in Vietnam.  While he was at times capable of being a great father, and taught me to love science and history, to stand up for myself at all times, and to be fearless, he also taught me to live in my anger and made me hyper-sensitive to control and authority.  Mostly he did this by throwing me into walls and holding knives to my throat while berating me for not being a man because I hadn't been in the military (nevermind that I was twelve, and the military wouldn't take me...).

One of my most vivid memories from my early childhood is my dad dragging my mother out of the shower, naked, and into the living room and beating the crap out of her in front of me because I bumped into a table and knocked over a glass of wine.  Thats the sort of thing that really messes you up, you know what I'm saying?  It's hard to process that kind of thing.

But I manage.
