Montana senator denies being drunk during floor speech

Montana Democratic Sen. Max Baucus, who marshaled health care reform through the Senate, has been accused in an anonymous Web posting of being drunk during a floor speech last week. Baucus denies the claim, and his spokesman says the story is a "smear" and a "slander" that never should have been picked up by other media.Idaho GOP Sens. Mike Crapo, a leading critic of the Baucus bill, and Jim Risch declined to comment on whether their colleague might have been drunk on Dec. 22, when he blasted GOP senators for not bargaining in good faith on a possible bipartisan bill.

A YouTube clip of the speech was the top item on the conservative Drudge Report on Monday, with the headline reading: "Drunk with power? Top Dem Baucus slurs on Senate floor."

The clip remained prominent on Drudge's Web page Tuesday afternoon. It had been viewed more than 1.2 million times and had drawn almost 10,000 comments.

I saw that clip. I don't know if he was drunk, but he was certainly impaired. Just click on any other clip of Baucus speaking and you can see the difference. If he wasn't drinking, he ought to get himself checked out pronto. He could have had a TIA.

Glad I'm not in Congress.  I'm famous for weird sounding speech (can't get words out, occasionally slurring) from time to time, either when I've got, or am about to have, a migraine headache.

Nah, I'll let you blame this one on Bush Lucy, just for old times sake.

You can be sure that the sales of single malt scotch in America have declined dramatically since the passing of Ted. Maybe Ol Max is just trying to help out the Kennedy clan by boosting slales.

Wasn't there a Congressman who had a stroke while doing a conference call with journalists a few years back???

Just a guess I'm going to go with here, he had a couple hi-grade sinus pills in him, washed down with whiskey.  Credit where it is due; as fucked up as he was, he got his ass down there and gave his speech.

The way the Democrats go about things it'll be more like "free booze for life for all of Nebraska".

(Paid for by the citizens of Idaho and Massachusetts, of course).
