MzMia -> Happy New Year's Matey's/Embracing our Differences (12/31/2009 3:37:22 PM)

I have wanted to say this for a while.
I enjoy the diversity of the posters that post down here in Politics and Religion.
Note, I am not saying I agree with everyone's opinion.
Think how boring this place would be if we all held the exact same views?

I think we can learn from each other, and gain a sense of respect for people who

view life very differently than we do.
......Don't tell Sanity, but sometimes I listen to Rush and big water headed Hannity, because I enjoy
hearing what people on the right/and conservatives are thinking.
I have to admit, I usually can only listen to Rush for about 5-10 minutes before quickly turning the channel.

Anyway, Happy New Year's Matey's!!
I hope we can play nice together and embrace our differences in 2010.

In the spirit of the New Year I have a link!!!!   [;)]
This is a link that compares the 2 major political parties side by side in the following categories: wrong doings, financial disasters, miscellaneous awfulness,
positive accomplishments and Presidents who can be credibly accused of felonius behavior!!

So far, the Republicans are way ahead, except for the category of positive accomplishments.

I do feel that the Republicans should be credited for ending slavery, even if their motives were not completely altruistic.

Federalists and Anti-Federalists The creation of the Constitution entailed hours of debate and compromise, and even when it was completed, some delegates were unhappy with it. The task of fixing the ailing Confederate government was not complete yet; each state had to ratify, or approve, the Constitution. Basically, people divided into two groups, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists. Each of their viewpoints is worth examining, as they both have sound reasoning. The Anti-Federalists did not want to ratify the Constitution. Basically, they argue that:
  • It gave too much power to the national government at the expense of the state governments.
  • There was no bill of rights.
  • The national government could maintain an army in peacetime.
  • Congress, because of the `necessary and proper clause,' wielded too much power.
  • The executive branch held too much power.
Of these complaints, the lack of a bill of rights was the most effective. The American people had just fought a war to defend their rights, and they did not want a intimidating national government taking those rights away again. The lack of a bill of rights was the focus of the Anti-Federalist campaign against ratification. The Federalists, on the other hand, had answers to all of the Anti-Federalist complaints. Among them:
  • The separation of powers into three independent branches protected the rights of the people. Each branch represents a different aspect of the people, and because all three branches are equal, no one group can assume control over another.
  • A listing of rights can be a dangerous thing. If the national government were to protect specific listed rights, what would stop it from violating rights other than the listed ones? Since we can't list all the rights, the Federalists argued that it's better to list none at all.
Overall, the Federalists were more organized in their efforts. By June of 1788, the Constitution was close to ratification. Nine states had ratified it, and only one more (New Hampshire) was needed. To achieve this, the Federalists agreed that once Congress met, it would draft a bill of rights. Finally, New York and Virginia approved, and the Constitution was a reality. Interestingly, the Bill of Rights was not originally a part of the Constitution, and yet it has proved to be highly important to protecting the rights of the people.

Anti-Federalist Papers During the period from the drafting and proposal of the federal Constitution in September, 1787, to its ratification in 1789 there was an intense debate on ratification. The principal arguments in favor of it were stated in the series written by Madison, Hamilton, and Jay called the Federalist Papers, although they were not as widely read as numerous independent local speeches and articles. The arguments against ratification appeared in various forms, by various authors, most of whom used a pseudonym. Collectively, these writings have become known as the Anti-Federalist Papers. We here present some of the best and most widely read of these. They contain warnings of dangers from tyranny that weaknesses in the proposed Constitution did not adequately provide against, and while some of those weaknesses were corrected by adoption of the Bill of Rights, others remained, and some of these dangers are nowcoming to pass. http://www.constitution.org/afp/afp.htm

I watched a whole thirty minutes of Rush being interviewed once, obviously I had it on mute so could pretend it was a Mr potatoe head cartoon. Don’t think I would have got through it if I hadn’t been making up the words he was saying myself.

Happy new year Mz Mia.

Edited: for de plurification.

Happy New Year! Hope everyone has a great time, a better year next year and drives safely tonight.

Oh - and that list is pretty seriously skewed - they can somehow find only 9 criminal acts performed by a Democratic official in the entire history of the United States!? I also note it doesn't even list such things that happened under the aegis of Democratic Party such as the "Trail of Tears", the Indian Removal Act, George Wallace and segregation, or the fact that support of slavery was a plank of the Democratic Party.

I'm not saying that the Republican Party is a perfect bastion of light and goodness but, y'know, fair is fair.

InvisibleBlack, that list is at least, as far and balanced as Fox News!
lol

Sanity -> RE: Happy New Year's Matey's/Embracing our Differences (12/31/2009 4:32:00 PM)

Thank you MzMia, I apreciate the spirit of your post, hugs to you and everyone else as well, and Happy New Year.

Wow - you might listen to Rush Limbaugh more than me. I might hear twenty minutes per week of his broadcasts, if I have to drive somewhere during the weekday I tune him in occasionally. Usually in the car I'm banging my head to that devil music though, either X-Rock or that good classic hard rock.

I don't listen to Hannity at all, his nagging voice irritates the hell out of me. But I am sure he means well...

I agree with you as far as its the diversity that makes collarchat fun. I thought XI was a little prickly sometimes (okay a lot prickly) but as a certain retread who the dogs just dragged in is busily demonstrating, she was um, I hate to say it, but a necessary evil I think. Since she's been gone its like a cage match and I've had to sharpen my elbows up a bit in order to to try to deal with the new order of things, but I'd prefer a more gentlemanly exchange of viewpoints, and I am trying to remember to count to ten before hitting the "OK" button (though I don't always succeed). Maybe in the future I can set a better example...

I'll work on that.

Thomas

Mia, that list is such a piece of partisan hackery, I'd expect to find it posted by somebody who shotgun posts the links and gets all offended and demands sympathy for some completely unrelated medical disorder when called on it.  You should have included the blushing smiley when you hit 'paste.'  Where, just for a single recent example, was Congressman William Jefferson, Democrat, Louisiana, and his freezer full of cash?

That said, Happy New Year to all, whether I agree with them, or even like them, or not.

DarkSteven -> RE: Happy New Year's Matey's/Embracing our Differences (12/31/2009 5:32:25 PM)

MzMia, I have no clue if I'm a liberal or conservative, so I have no problem embracing folks from both camps.

Or excoriating both of them.  Whatever.

Yeah, I agree.

Happy New Year, but if this is a bipartisan peace offering, we've quite a ways to good before we get to fair discussions of differences.

Live well.
