I think I'm just noticing the change. It was hard for me to adjust from the Guns are blazing message boards of Yahoo, where I cut my teeth, to here where censorship established clear lines against "personal attacks."

Most of my favorite posters are gone, and I've always preferred the writers with edge to the kiss asses.

To me, if you want polite, sanitized conversation -- go to a cocktail party, not a message board.

All that said, what change in policy was enacted?

Officially, none. As far as I can tell. Apparently the party line is that it's always been this way, we just never noticed.

Silly us.

breatheasone -> RE: Thoughts on Moderation (1/12/2010 11:04:33 PM)

It must be a cycle or something...because it used to be, you couldn't say boo to anyone here hardly, and there was some pretty blatant favoritism. Now it seems they are less interested in personal attacks, and very concerned about What, gets posted, Where. [sm=2cents.gif]

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Thoughts on Moderation (1/12/2010 11:20:28 PM)

The forums were becoming quieter and less interesting because too many users got sucked away by Fetlife. Loosening up the restrictions and allowing banned posters to return is intended to breathe a little life back into the forums, increase the post count, and kick up the hit count. That translates into advertising revenue. It's all marketing. Banning offensive posters was costing them money. That's what the whole thing was about.

Bingo....Good point. Man...its gonna get ugly then...(just sayin)

KMsAngel -> RE: Thoughts on Moderation (1/12/2010 11:25:14 PM)

gonna? please, there's a few posters who hadn't been banned who've been seriously ugly.

it's the returnees who've been fun and interesting!

*waves to domiguy especially)

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Thoughts on Moderation (1/12/2010 11:39:13 PM)

Oh. Yeah. "I'm glad Spinner is dead" on a message board that's still being read by the man's widow is not the least bit ugly. Yes, that's very fun and very interesting, no question about it. I haven't laughed so hard since 9/11.

Yeah, i'm hip.... Its called favoritism.

breatheasone -> RE: Thoughts on Moderation (1/12/2010 11:41:11 PM)

Forgive my use of the word "gonna" i guess i can't win for losing.

Apparently the party line is that it's always been this way, we just never noticed.

That wasn't my understanding.  I thought it was more along the lines of, "Return to the original policies of the site."  The profile side of things has always been run by the philosophy of "block and hide if you don't like it, report if things are mega-bad not just annoying."  The moderation style on the message boards (and, more recently, the video chat) has changed from time to time.  I see an overall attempt to run all aspects of the site with a consistent philosophy, which also happens to be the original one.

mnottertail -> RE: Thoughts on Moderation (1/13/2010 9:31:56 AM)

My thoughts on Moderaton:

Every time my thoughts on moderation have been, when I get let off it, I am gonna get that motherfucker.......................

Or am I the only one?

Ron

Two of my favorite posters defected to FETLIFE, each claiming it is much better over there. Some have just dropped off. One left because of the moderators.

I could not really make sense of FETLIFE, so I have not actively entered that forum.

Once the difference was pointed out, I did see it.
