LafayetteLady -> I can't find my cat! (12/31/2009 8:28:13 PM)

The other day, my basement (also my son's room) flooded. They sump pump broke and with all the snow and then a semi-warm day it all melted and well, me and two other neighbors got flooded. Anyway, my beloved Socks, the stray that adopted me almost a year ago must have slipped out the door while the issue was getting resolved (there is now a hose running out under the back door and there was lots of in an out downstairs).

Normally, I keep a close eye and will close her in my bedroom, but with the cast on my ankle, the frustration over the flood, and the work being downstairs (where I try not to hobble down to much, fell twice trying already), I just didn't pay that much attention. See, Socks isn't really a "people" kitty, so when there are many people around she runs and hides.

Well, that was Tuesday and it's now Thursday night and she hasn't come home yet! We have had windy cold days and a bunch of snow today. She usually comes when called and she isn't this time. I'm getting pretty worried. She is a really wonderful pet and I know she was a stray so she has lived outside in this weather before but that doesn't help my concern much.

Anyone have any suggestions?

put out food to see if it gets eaten, then dont put any out for a few days then put it out again and sit with her, it might entice her to come back in side

Its how we got pebbles back inside, also put a box out side with dry blankys and such so she can keep warms

I haven't even SEEN her. If she were around she would run in the door very quick I'm sure (she has in the past). Even though she was a stray outdoor girl when she found me, she took to being an indoor cat very quickly and has been more than happy to stay inside most of the time.

UniqueRaven -> RE: I can't find my cat! (12/31/2009 8:39:13 PM)

Have you considered using a "hav-a-hart" trap baited with some yummy food?  This is the trap that the doors close when she eats the food from the inside bait tray.  Often you can borrow one from your local humane society or SPCA and not have to pay the expense of buying one yourself.

Hopefully she's just hunkered down somewhere.  It is awfully cold!

Kirata -> RE: I can't find my cat! (12/31/2009 9:08:03 PM)

You've been her home and her family for a year now, she won't run away. If she's required watching to keep her from getting out, the likely reason is that something interests her... guess what that is.

I'm a little surprised that the cold, rainy weather hasn't inspired her to say, "aw, fuck this, I'm going back inside." What's your neighborhood like? Are there houses close by, where a neighbor might have taken her in? Does she have a collar and a tag?

Have you contacted her bank to find out where she last used her credit cards? That'd be the first thing I'd try.

Good  luck; missing cats are extremely stressful. Hope she comes back soon, with gifts from wherever she's been and colorful stories to tell.

Sanity -> RE: I can't find my cat! (12/31/2009 9:28:26 PM)

Cats can act just like they have a mind of their own sometimes, and they will stay gone for days and days. Its not necessarily anything you should be too concerned over, they're pretty good survivors and the do love adventure.

If she isn't fixed, you might want to monitor her for pregnancy, and get her fixed as soon as your vet says its okay. Then she wont be as likely to stray, but she still might on occasion.

LafayetteLady -> RE: I can't find my cat! (12/31/2009 10:09:13 PM)

UniqueRaven,

I'm friendly with my local animal control guy, if she doesn't come home tonight or tomorrow, I might contact him and ask him if he has one. The thing is that in this area, there are a whole bunch of other things I might catch first, lol.

Kirata,

I know she won't run away. Shoot, the last time I left her alone for about 24 hours staying with a friend, she went crazy when I got home very much like a puppy would. It's just that with the weather around here the past couple of days, I hate to think of her trying to stay warm somewhere.

ThatDamnedPanda,

Yea, well she misused her credit cards, so they got taken away, lol. I figured she would be back by now meowing her head off about the cold as well. She doesn't like most people, so even if a neighbor tried to get her inside, she isn't likely to go.

Sanity,

Actually, one of the reasons I took her with us when we moved was because she was pregnant and I couldn't stand the idea of her having her kittens with no home. As it was, she was too young to be pregnant anyway and we lost two of the kittens, the third was a little terror who both momma cat and I was glad to see go.

After the kitten was gone and her milk dried up, I just never had the time to take her to get her fixed. Since she was never going out, I didn't sweat it much.

Yep, I'm pretty sure that she was looking to go out and get some action. Not thrilled about it either. Right now though I just want to get her in from the cold. So I'm going to hobble over to the door and try to call her one more time before going to bed. She would always sleep curled up next to me at night or purring on my chest.

Have you seen the delivery van from Fu's Kitchen in the neighborhood?

That was a really messed up comment on your part.................... Talk about no sense of  empathy or common courtesy  for your fellow human being .

Oh please. It was a joke. It's not like what he wrote is really going to affect the return of the cat. Lighten up.

OP....have you checked the bottom of your cast to see if she's stuck there? Looked in the crockpot?

This isn't Ann Landers, this place is designed to attract sadists. Its probably a good idea to keep that in mind while posting.

I posted yesterday about my ideas for how site moderation should proceed in 2010.  I think most people (including me) like the idea of things being looser around here than they have been.  However, I do remember posting that racial slurs shouldn't be tolerated.  Race-based humor like this seems awfully frikkin close to me.  I have no idea whether a mod will think it's over the line and pull it, but it seems to me that it's not too much to ask for people to avoid shit like this, in order to have much more latitude to talk about virtually everything else.

Making the same joke, but with the local Satanists cult, would not have concerned me.

I hope you find your cat, LafayetteLady.

Happy New Year, everyone!

I suppose you have a point. We're supposed to be politically correct sadists.

If it makes you feel any better, when the weather was cold and rainy a month or so ago, one of our cats got out ... no sign of her anywhere, didn't come when called, didn't go into the garage to harass the chickens like she normally does ... just gone.

Then just over 2 weeks later, there she was at the back deck door, meowing to wake the dead wanting back in. I certainly hope that your kitty returns to you.

Eh, not what I meant.  It seems to me there's a difference between a race discussion and a racial slur.  If you start a thread in Politics and Religion called "Chinese Restaurant Joke: Is This Offensive?" and then discuss humor like that, it doesn't seem like a big deal to me, because anyone clicking into that thread knows what they're getting into.  I'm more concerned about an Asian thinking this is a thread about finding a cat, and seeing that racial smear yet again. We don't want to turn people away from the site for the wrong reasons, you know?

I hope you see the difference.  I'm not asking for political correctness, just showing of respect, and maybe warning labels if you know a topic is going to get close to a line, so there's less justification for anyone to report anyone else's posts.

This is not an official position, and maybe a mod will post here that I'm full of shit.  If I had some ability to direct this site's content, though, this is the general direction I would try to move things in.

Phoenixpower -> RE: I can't find my cat! (1/1/2010 8:23:27 AM)

I am sorry to hear that LafayetteLady,

I felt worried myself just half a week ago when my ginger cat was not at home for 2 nights and the weather wasn't great here with being cold and rainy. But in my situation it might be different as I am not at home much with my work committments so he must have missed the right time to get back after being one night outside...however, as others said are there any areas (basement) or whatever where your cat could be stuck in?

My mother used to have the habbit to go to the cellar to do the laundry, not realising that the cat was following her and well...the the cat wasnt to be seen for over a day if she did not get back to there....once we realised that this happened rather often we checked quicker that place.

On another occassion I was visiting my parents with my 2 cats at that time for just a few days and my cat Oliver did not come home...once I got the car ready as I had to go he finally miaowed and what had happened? He had stuck in neighbours shed. My neighbour said that no cat would be able to be trapped in there...but well...mine did....my neighbour had to undo parts of his shed board as he was stuck between the tanks and the shed in there...he might have slipped down there in between when he was walking along them...at the end we through a duvet down to him where he hold himself with his front paws and got him out...and apart from being quite smelly he was fine...so he had to get showered before being alowed in the car to get back home (and he was even happy about not having to clean himself on that occasion).

Also on one occassion my birman kitten was lost...and after several times searching up and down the street with cat food (and 2 of my other 3 cats accompanying me as if they would have decided to help me to search her) she finally turned up...which was a relief as she could have easily ended up as fox food that night, considering the size she was and she is not a good fighter anyway...

Best wishes in a safe return to your cat. But on the plus side...your cat is known to the outside world with having been a stray before so I doubt that your cat will be in trouble. Nevertheless good luck for a safe return home soon [:)]

Yeah, they can stay gone for a loooong time, and still come back.

There were reports of flounder being located there, so it wouldn't hurt to look.
