No idea, was just the last I read on it.  Supposedly neither of them knew about his orientation but had bought drugs from him before and intended to rob him of both drugs and money that night. Once the media found out that he was gay they decided it must have been the reason for the act.  Of course, this came out several years after the conviction so who knows?  Perhaps they just got bored in prison and needed some attention.

To the credit of the folks in Wyoming, both of these vicious killers were found guilty and will be incarcerated for the rest of their lives and are thus quarantined from society as a whole.

But... if memory serves me correctly... they left in the truck to the scene of a murder from a gay bar, or at least a bar where gay men where known to frequent. I haven't watched the Laramie Project or done other research into it in years.
