I think if the Iranians want to have a bomb we should let them. It’s not our business what they do in their own country except if they use the bomb they will of course need to be punished. So I would sign an agreement with Israel that if Iran attacks Israel or any other country in the region using nuclear weapons Iran will be attacked with equal force; that should make Iran think twice about using the it.

Neocons Worried That Sanctions Might Not Kill Enough Innocent Iranians | Diplomacy

Wednesday’s Washington Post contains a rundown of the Obama administration’s current thinking on Iran sanctions. The bottom line: administration officials are increasingly open to sanctions, but want to find ways to target the Revolutionary Guard and other hardline elements within the regime without inflicting needless suffering on the civilian population.

For that reason, the administration shows “little apparent interest in legislation racing through Congress that would punish companies that sell refined petroleum to Iran,” whose brunt would be borne by the most vulnerable segments of the populace. (”Look, we need to be honest about this,” neoconservative foreign policy guru Fred Kagan admitted this spring. “Iranians are going to die if we impose additional sanctions.”)

Lol!  Good morning...

Rough night Lucy?

But seriously, the problem with punishing IRAN when they use "the bomb" will be, once they use it they'll probably use far more than just one - and think of how horrific that day will be.

And then how will we then punish them, with sanctions? Or by killing more millions of innocents in Tehran and Mashhad?

They are going to have a fuck of a time right now with 'more than one' first off, they have the resources that can produce one small one a year, now I know you think ALL Islamists are Zealots, but the engineering that could conceivably take place in Iran right now to launch it is a wood and metal catapult....they have almost nil in rocketry, having put one sattelite in orbit in February this year (on the backs of our old buddies the russians) and the commies (lol, even the commies are not commies anymore) are not likely with our latest agreements on sanctions to allow them needful resources. so, at best we have about 10 years before threat is turned to puce or muave or whatever on the Homeland Security Color wheel, at least in terms of targeting locally, and probably another 10 to do anything meaningful to the US. The time to repair the roof is while the sun is shining, however, and remembering that this is 'threat' is in Russias and Chinas ACTUAL backyard long before ours (cuz, Israel is on their own there, and will take action long before we need to to cut the hemmoroid out) since they are far more threatened than us.......

Anyway.......nah......we got way fucking closer problems to bump on the priority list than Iran, but I am in no wise saying we shouldnt be actively involved there in the issues with our business partner China, and our good friend (when it behooves them to be so) Russia.

The real bottom line is this ... they (this is the ubiquitous THEY as in "THEM"(you know who I mean)) aren't worried at all about Iran actually attacking someone with a nuclear weapon. The area we're talking about is so small and their nuclear technology is fairly primitive (which means their bomb would be pretty dirty) and so the fallout and collateral effects of nuking, oh, say Israel, would result in radioactive effects across a goodly chunk of the Arab world.

Nothing like morning fallout in Mecca to put a damper on your jihad.

The problem is that if Iran develops a nuclear weapon, even a small one, even if their delivery system is driving it around on a truck, suddenly the PTB (that's Powers That Be) can't just throw their weight around the Middle East however they want. Suddenly someone from Iran can say "stop, that's enough or else" and have to actually be listened to. Suddenly all those pipelines (like the 4 billion dollar one that runs from Azerbijhan through Georgia and Turkey to Ceyhan (which, btw was commissioned in 2002 and finished in 2005 - gee, right in the midst of the Iraq war)) are vulnerable hostages and foreign governments won't have a free hand and carte blanche to play realpolitik in the Middle East anymore. The option of invading Iran and toppling their government (like we did in Iraq or the British did in 1941 in Iran) would be off the table and suddenly Iran would actually have to be listened to and taken seriously.

This has absolutely nothing to do with any sort of realistic atomic threat and everything to do with the balance of power in the Middle East. The real debate is over whether or not it's worth expanding the current theater of war to a third front to prevent this.

I wonder if Mr. Ahmadinejad is aware of this?

quote:

Iran leader's comments attacked

Mr Ahmadinejad warned Muslim leaders not to recognise Israel

The European Union and Russia have joined condemnation of the Iranian president's public call for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's remark has already been condemned by individual EU states and Canada who all summoned Iranian diplomats for an explanation.

A top Israeli minister called for Iran to be expelled from the United Nations.

The White House said the comment showed the US was right to be concerned about Iran's nuclear programme.

Coincidentally, since he has made that statement he has been working steadily towards acquiring nuclear warheads and delivery systems.

I agree Sanity, on the surface he has. I dont think they are close to achieving it, or Israel would have done that they did to Iraqs facility. With the problems in Iran at present i think any rash action might work against the west, by giving the different factions a common cause. Softly softly is the way forward for now.

I have read a few posts that say that Iran does not have a delivery system for nuclear weapons other than a truck.

You people seem to have forgotten that Iran is dealing with Russia in developing their nuclear technology.  I would venture a guess that if Iran wanted a delivery system, then some one who is not on the friendliest terms with the US or Western world would be more than happy to provide the technology.

Iran does have medium range missile technology which puts all of the middle east in the cross hairs.  Look what Iraq did with scuds, which were 1960's era technology.  They were fired and not addressed in any manner other than "To Whom It May Concern."  Nukes can be fired in the same way, in fact, Iran would probably be more than happy to launch a nuke for a general not strategic strike.

I must also point out that Israel has a nuclear arsenal, which is one reason that no Arab country really wants to start another Arab/Israeli war.  Israel has made it clear that it will use nuclear weapons if threatened or attacked en mass.  If it is attacked with nukes you can be sure that for every one fired at them they probably have two, with better guidance and delivery systems to return the favor.

jlf, long time no see, I missed your posts. Its so good to hear from you again!

I recall some North Korean vessels that have been intercepted as well. It seems to me that its not a matter of if theres going to be massive loss of life due to the Iranian regime but when.

Mutually assured destruction is no deterrent to those who really believe that the hand of Allah will turn the battle in their favor, and who believe that martyrdom is the most virtuous act that a man can achieve.

I have a question for you sanity, but first some background information...

The Chinese economy is dependent on our economy, and the world economy as a whole...
The Russian Nuclear capability is obsolete and in disrepair (intel feels the situation is such that the weapon and delivery systems would most likely fail at launch or in flight.)

So, just who is targeted by the United States Nuclear forces?

I live near a B1 base,  and there are aircraft sitting on the alert pad 24/7 fifty two weeks a year.  The aircraft are armed with nukes. (It has been made clear that the nuclear combat forces remain on alert many times since the end of the cold war)

The wing at Dyess has sent B1's to hit targets in Iraq and Afghanistan and none of the aircraft on the alert pad were involved.

I would only be guessing, that kind of thing is secret. But I know the Chinese are developing ICBMs, and Russia is delivering unknown goods to Venezuela. We might have some aimed at those potential threats as well as at Cuba and North Korea, and Iran...

But I don't really know. I didn't know that Russia's capabilities had deteriorated as much as you say. This is the first I'd heard of that, last I'd read they were using their gas and oil money to rebuild.

Speaking of Russia, did you hear about this exchange?

quote:

FRENCH JOURNALIST:  ...Don't you think that by trying to eradicate terrorism in Chechnya you are going to eradicate the civilian population of Chechnya?

VLADIMIR PUTIN: If you want to become an Islamic fundamentalist and be circumcised, come to Moscow. We are multiconfessional. We have very good specialists. I can recommend one for the operation. He'll make sure nothing grows back.

Now, I don't like Putin. BUT, its too bad our leaders don't have balls of steel like that.
