fastlane -> Cracklin Rose? (3/20/2006 4:10:48 PM)

I was listening to oldies and Neil Diamond's Cracklin Rose was playing...Here is a lyric.."Cracklin Rose you're a store bought woman, but you make me feel like a guitar hummin."
WTF is a store bought woman?  If  I knew, ... Hell, I'd buy a dozen....blue light special...50% off on all women tonight....DAYUM, where the hell does Neil shop?
A store bought woman?  Fastlane scoffs at the notion.  I have rented one or two for a spell, but bought.....Geez, I wish!
So, what is a store bought woman and where do I find one?

Kevin

I dunno fastlane...but the Dresden Dolls seem to know where to get a "coin operated boy"
coin operated boy
sitting on the shelf he is just a toy
but i turn him on and he comes to life
automatic joy
that is why i want a coin operated boy
made of plastic and elastic
he is rugged and long-lasting
who could ever ever ask for more
love without complications galore
many shapes and weights to choose from
i will never leave my bedroom
i will never cry at night again
wrap my arms around him and pretend....

coin operated boy
all the other real ones that i destroy
cannot hold a candle to my new boy and i'll
never let him go and i'll never be alone
not with my coin operated boy......
this bridge was written to make you feel smittener
with my sad picture of girl getting bitterer
can you extract me from my plastic fantasy
i didnt think so but im still convinceable
will you persist even after i bet you
a billion dollars that i'll never love you
will you persist even after i kiss you
goodbye for the last time
will you keep on trying to prove it?
i'm dying to lose it...
i want it
i want you
i want a coin operated boy.
and if i had a star to wish on
for my life i cant imagine
any flesh and blood could be his match
i can even take him in the bath
coin operated boy
he may not be real experienced with girls
but i know he feels like a boy should feel
isnt that the point that is why i want a
coin operated boy
with his pretty coin operated voice
saying that he loves me that hes thinking of me
straight and to the point
that is why i want
a coin operated boy.

lol

Good question, fastlane. My interpretation of that term has been.. ordinary, commonplace, " off the rack".  Ya know, store bought vs home made or designer.
Don't know if that is what he meant, but how I took it.

Kevin,
I thought "Cracklin Rose" was just a new age alternative to 'Cracklin Bran'; you know a new breakfast cerial. Bought in a store.

If I knew anything else I'd be admitting to listening to Neil Diamond. Hell, 'I'm Nobody's Fool'. I didn't join my 'Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show', like those 'Kentucky Woman. I'd be 'Crazy'. A 'Solitary Man' in 'America', with my 'Love on the Rocks'. 'Either Way', 'Every Minute, Every Hour' 'Everything's Gonna Be Fine'. I'll be a 'Faithful Man' to beth, 'Forever in Blue Jeans'.

I may look like a 'Hit Man', but 'I'm Not All Bad'. 'I Am...I Said'; a 'New York Boy', a 'Staw In The Wind', singing my own 'Songs Of Life. Come a 'September Morn' 'Signs' may portray 'The Story of My Life', filled with 'Sweet L.A Days' and nights with my 'Smokey Lady'. 'On The Way To The Sky' with 'No Expectation', 'No Limit', a 'Mortal Man', I won't fear any Monkey singing 'Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow', because 'I'm a Believer'!

And I'd NEVER admit to listening to Neil Diamond.

i'm gonna probably show my age here..lol.. but

i remember a time (from listening to the news cuz i was a kid) that the lovely ladies of the evening used to hang around the downtown areas, in the doorways of stores that had closed for the evening.

errr...i think..lol

Researcher (c) David Volk has related thoughts:

But the SongMeanings.Net Research Institute of Nearly Forgotten Song Lyrics conducted an online symposium in 2005 that brought out the real story:

"Well, I read in an article (presumably by Neil) that he thought to write the song after visiting an Indian reservation one night. He said the men had nothing to do but sit around and drink cheap wine which I believe was called "Cranklin Rosie". Store-bought woman that knows how to make them happy. Kinda sad, but a fun song to listen to.

"My favourite Neil Diamond song! I always liked the tune, but when I heard Neil give his explanation for the lyrics...well it just tugged on my heart strings. Now I almost cry when I hear it over the radio (as I crank up the volume!). You see, Neil Diamond said he was once travelling though a small hick town (forgotten where) which was on the outskirts of a Native American Reserve. The Natives were addicted to alcohol, but didn't have enough money to afford real drink. So they purchased an aftershave lotion from the local drugstore. Neil remembered it was pink in colour, and THIS WAS THE REASON the Natives called it "Cracklin Rosie"... as though it was some fancy sparkling wine or something.

"And Neil was there when they sat around drinking this stuff in order to get drunk and forget all of their troubles... If you have EVER had to help get a loved one though the agony of alcohol addiction (like I have)... YOU'LL UNDERSTAND just how lovely... and how SAD, this song really is."

Of all the songs, the one you didn't mention is the most pertinent to this board.. "Play me."

I am I said.
To no one there,
and no one came and heard,
not even the chair.

I am I said,
I am said I..............

Need I say more?

Yep, it's an ode to a cheap wine.

(think maddog 20/20...)[:'(]

michaelGA -> RE: Cracklin Rose? (3/21/2006 5:15:53 AM)

think Madonna's "Material Girl" then you've got the picture.
