LadyAngelika, thank you so much for bringing this topic to the boards. I never considered intelligence as a fetish, but thinking back on my life, i do physically get turned on by listening to an intelligent conversation, as well as being a part. In reality it is a must for me, because I have noticed without it, nothing else gets me going.
One of my favorite tv shows that was on PBS a couple decades ago was called "The Meeting of the Minds", well that to me would been comparable to men who have big breast fetishes. I just drolled the whole time. I live to go to libraries, musuems and always wanted to transport myself back to the Alexandria Library...k, see i go over board:). I have to say for me it is a fetish.
Again thank you for bringing this topic up and now I feel great........i learned something:)

I got fairly thoroughly reamed in another thread for admitting to a big-breast fetish...Haven't received a 6-on-1 beatdown since high-school
And now people are fetishizing...intelligence?
So for me to have my first computer at 4 and BUILD my first at 8 is now sexy?

My first thought is that the concept of "intelligence" is not universal here.  Some are using it to refer to formal education, some to street smarts, and I suspect some may associate vocabulary with it.  There's also the ability to speak several "languages" - real languages as well as the lingo of math, physics, etc.  Someone also referred to innate intelligence - genetic intelligence, as it were.

To me, intelligence is the ability to assimilate and process new information, and the amount of information that has already been assimilated, as well as the ability to use that information.

I find a low level of intelligence to be a turn off.  In addition, as a Dom, I feel responsible for a sub and don't want to have to keep an eye on her so that she doesn't fall for online scams, etc.

I want beauty AND brains in a sub.

I have always been attracted to a big brain, but I wouldn't call it a fetish, merely a preference. There are really intelligent people to whom I am not at all attracted.  On the other hand I don't think I could sustain a relationship with a man who I believed to be unintelligent. Maybe a weekend, though.

Intelligence is such a slippery concept....  One (wo)man's prodigy is another's complete dumbass, depending on the kind of intelligence (street smarts, book smarts, whatever) any particular person values.

But as for an "intelligence fetish"....   I sometime use that term to refer to men who think they dig smart chicks (define as you will) but don't actually have any interest in the substance of the smartitude. (sorry)   For example, in my youth, in grad school, I dated someone for many years who *loved* to tell his work colleagues et al. about his PhD-pursuing gf.  (they were largely lawyers of the sort who value degrees)  But with me, he 1) frequently trivialized what I was studying and 2) was entirely unsympathetic to the heinous process involved in getting a phd.  To me there was something ickily fetishistic in that.  He was attracted to the *idea* of it, the superficial parts, and what it implied about him to third parties (and/or to himself) that he was unrepentantly dating a geek... but he was in various ways threatened by the reality.

But perhaps this is irrelevant to <cough> "sapiosexuals" (doesn't the word sound like they are trying to make it into an orientation rather than a fetish?  It sounds rather obnoxious.)

For me, smart is definitely sexy, but smart comes in all shapes and sizes.  And, yeah, the best fling I ever had was with someone I couldn't bear to talk to for more than maybe half-an-hour, except to listen to his super cool accent.  Call me intermittently superficiosexual.

You didn't admit to having a big-breast fetish. You continually made comments in poor taste to women about their breasts even when they asked you to stop.

Are you incapable of seeing the difference there?

In the realm of kink, are we really over fetishizing just about anything by calling intelligence a fetish?

It's entirely possible. I'm guilty of calling something a fetish when it isn't really. I guess it's just a convienent shorthand for "something that really really really gets me hot" for me sometimes.

Whether we call it a fetish or a preference, why do we consider certain some more shallow than others? Is that fair?

If something is truly a fetish, I don't think it's fair to call it shallow. It's something is just part of a person's wiring for reasons we don't know or understand but it's there and called be changed. However how the person in question expresses that fetish and subjects other people to it can be shallow.

IE: A man may have a fetish, or extreme attraction to women who are very thin. I wouldn't consider this shallow. However, if he contacts women randomly demanding that they lose weight, being insulting, or demeaning I would consider that behavior shallow and an inappropriate way of acting on his fetish.

Only that is it possible that the defination of fetish is evolving?

I have had multiple sex dreams about Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory. There, I admitted it...

I'm pretty sure there isn't any reason other than intelligence for me to find him attractive. But it really doesn't seem necessary to call it a fetish. It's a preference, probably a requirement, and I certainly wouldn't be attracted to someone without it. However I don't need a guy to be telling me about String Theory while he's fucking me, while he's fucking me I generally like to be lost in the physical, not the physics.

It might turn me on beforehand though.

That was actually my initial reaction a few weeks ago, but I shrugged it off. Now that you mention it here, I'm thinking about it again and you have a point.

Funny coincidence-
I actually played the part of Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory.

Well, actually the character's name was Heywood Jablome.

And the production was a video called The Gang Bang Theory.

And what we talked about was the G-string theory.

But other than that, it was exactly the same.

*looks up hopefully*

P.S. I have read Kant, Nietzche, and Heidegger.

Frankly, i do not know how to call it, but intelligence and a strong sense of humour are absolutly necessary for me to become more interested in somebody.

Sure a nice ass and green eyes will get my attention, but to have an ongoing attraction there must be more.

I would not call it a fetish, but a requirement. Intelligence is not sexual per se for me, but to understand something very complicated has a certain elating feeling. Calling it a fetish sounds to me very SM hip.

I should propose that to the Berlin SM crowd, maybe something for the monday meeting. We have meetings everyday, but Monday is still missing. The Sado Maso Monday Intelligence Meeting Berlin sounds good to me.

And concerning the question, if it is fair: I do not care. I respond to certain triggers and intelligence is one of them. My view is not limited to people who went to university, i found very intelligent people in all walks of live, but there has to be the spark of animated conversation and the synenergetic effect that two (or more) minds that discuss a topic seriously often achieve.
