One wounded, two dead (including the terrorist) in an attack on a federal facility in Las Vegas. No word yet on whether it is a christian terrorist, a muslim terrorist, a jewish terrorist, a wiccan terrorist, a quaker terrorist, or a secular terrorist.

quote:

(CNN) -- Two federal personnel were shot, one fatally, Monday in the lobby of a federal courthouse building in Las Vegas, Nevada, federal officials said. "A deputy U.S. marshal and court security officer were shot at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas this morning," said U.S. Marshals spokesman Jeff Carter. "The gunman was shot by Marshals Service personnel and has been pronounced dead. The deputy U.S. Marshal is in stable condition at a local hospital. Unfortunately, the court security officer succumbed to his wounds and passed away."

Surely just standard shooting people doesn't count as terrorism?

mnottertail -> RE: Terrorist Attack in Las Vegas (1/4/2010 12:19:01 PM)

Yep, I knew it, we are passing out Vegas brochures to these assholes.

Interesting that you use the word "terrorist" since there is (as far as I know) no proof this was a terrorist instead of simply a shooting.

There is nothing to point in that direction, a bit misleading and dramatic don't you think?

some posts have humor here, even amongst the serious political posters, consider it that hes doing rushes job till rush heals up.

Cool deal.   :-)

zephyroftheNorth -> RE: Terrorist Attack in Las Vegas (1/4/2010 12:56:56 PM)

It just makes me shake my head how easily people throw around the words "terrorist attack" these days. There's a shooting - terrorist attack, a bomb goes off - terrorist attack.

I'm waiting to hear more before I believe it was anything other than a shooting, this is all premature.

submittous -> RE: Terrorist Attack in Las Vegas (1/4/2010 2:36:36 PM)

maybe it is something to consider.... there is a lot more violence and killing going on in the US than ever done by terrorists, why are people running around with their panties in a bunch over Islamic terrorism but don't bat an eye over the Crips and Bloods killing people or the Drug cartels killing thousands every year?

Moonhead -> RE: Terrorist Attack in Las Vegas (1/4/2010 2:43:41 PM)

In the case of the drug cartels, I'd imagine it's mostly because the bulk of the killings take place outside of the country, mostly in South America, so who gives a shit about that?
As for the other, it's easy to act all paranoid about dirty foreigners who eat weird shit and don't speak proper English, but it's difficult to talk about gun control without being unamerican and probably a Stalinist.

The story has been updated. The guy was just pissed off because he lost a Social Security case.

Like a pissed off grizzly bear that just found his favorite dumpster locked up.

I knew a guy once who paid a brother of mine to beat him in the head with a baseball bat in an effort to disable him just enough that he could qualify for SS.

Compliments of the sound bite.

Actually, that was kind of the point I was making, in a somewhat sardonic and sneaky manner. Officially, according to the FBI, this was an instance of "single issue terrorism." Fits the category. My point (in addition to simply breaking the news that there had been a shooting), is precisely that - everything that may possibly have to do with a muslim or someone of a darker complexion is always "terrorist this, terrorist that, and don't try to tell me it wasn't terrorism, because the guy was an arab!" And sometimes a crime is just a crime, and a shooting is just a shooting. No matter how badly some people want to see terrorists under every bed. I know it was a little underhanded, and I'm sorry you were drawn into it, but I was feeling like a bit of a shit today.

Sanity -> RE: Terrorist Attack in Las Vegas (1/5/2010 6:18:23 AM)

No, according to the FBI,

quote:

...The gunman was shot and killed at the scene, FBI Special Agent Joseph Dickey confirmed. The gunman, who hid his gun under a black coat, died across the street, at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St., shortly after the shootout, he said.

Seven marshals and court security officers returned fire in the gunfight, Dickey said. Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting, but Dickey said "this was not a terrorist event."

Well then imo you failed because this comes across as exactly the sort of thing you were lampooning. In fact if anything you advanced the cause of those people who see a terrorist under every bed. Funny thing, it didn't even occur to me that the shooter might be of Middle Eastern descent, I actually thought he was caucasian.
