Repeated constriction of blood flow and also cause vascular damage. There are many dangers in life, and each of us make the assessment on risk to reward. There is a "choke" that you can do from front mount, meaning that you are facing the person. This will allow full view of their face and eyes, which is necessary to determine at what stage they are at in the "choke". Once they enter the first stage is when it should be released, this stage is often when you see people in MMA do a tap out. The second stage is unconsciousness, and if it reaches stage two they can go into cardiac or respitory arrest. I hope no one ever sees stage three first hand. Many things are dangerous, learn the skills, learn how to minimize risk, and learn what the consequences can be.
