Well, it's official. We are leaving Portugal.

Himself has been offered a major promotion within his company which he has accepted and we are moving to Milan. The target date for him to be in place is April 1, for a minimum two year stint to try to 'fix' what ails their offices in Italy. When we first got to Portugal, the offices here were doing about 5 million in net profit revenues. He started in Oct 2008 and now, end of 2009 they are sitting at 18 million net profit revenue. That was enough to impress the PTB to offer him COO of Italy so .. here we go again. My Italian is passable but I'm by no means fluent but Italy offers a lot of advantages to me, personally, over living in Portugal including the opportunity for a dual citizenship which means, if Himself will let me, I could actually go to work. Since we will probably only be there for two years I don't know if I want to start that as a process, but I might. There are still a lot of logistics to work out and given the clusterfuck that accompanied the mere 8 days we went over there in Nov of 2009, I am not at all delusional that April 1st will be the actual date we leave Portugal but I'm hopeful.

We are scheduled to make two trips together as well as Himself making several trips without me prior to that time so our trip to Egypt is officially on hold until the whole thing gets settled.

Italy will come with it's own set of issues for him. For one thing, the Portugal offices were actually operating in the black but the Italian branch is starting off 30 million in the red and losing more every day but they are looking at Himself as something of a miracle worker and given him all the power and backing he needs to try to get things turned around. He's figuring one year, minimum to get them to stop bleeding money.. another year to start erasing the debt they've already incurred and, maybe, actually start seeing a profit around year 3. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but basically, this is win-win for him because they don't *expect* that Italy can be saved and are ready to dump it. If he saves it, he's going to be the Golden boy and can probably write his own ticket &if he can't, it's not going to reflect on him because PTB don't expect anyone can actually turn things around but they are willing to try.

In any event, I'm feeling pretty good about this move even though I didn't care much for Milan as a place to actually live. I'll miss Cascais, the people and the incredible weather and scenery here and I'm not crazy about losing yet another hour in the time difference between here and California but at the same time, it's the opportunity to be able to discover part of my own Italian heritage and explore, in depth, the country which my great-grandparents and grandfather called home.

So, adeus Portugal and ciao Italia!

Well done to your other half!

First thing I would do, though it seems he needs little advice, is to check the books thoroughly. Nuff said perhaps. The north is nowhere near like the south, but it goes on all over. A quick look at the staff car park can tell volumes in itself.

If he needs any road transport, you know where to find me; even if its just to check that fair prices are being paid. Again, nuff said perhaps.

Congratulations to him and you! Italy - WOW! We'll be there soon too and now there is another reason to travel to Milan besides beth's desire to shop there.

We didn't get too much opportunity to chat during that hectic day at the Folsom Street Fair. The idea of a nice casual conversation while dining and sharing a fine bottle of wine 'al fresco' in Italy will be a lot more laid back.

What a GREAT opportunity! Good for you! Be careful driving!

Thank you Lady E. One of his perks, is that his package with the company includes a car (hopefully an automatic so I won't have to drive him!) I'm finding it a little tough to google apartments there but hopefully, the couple of trips I make there will be enough to insure that we have a place to live that isn't too far from the business district where the corporate office is located although he'll be traveling to all the offices in Italy. My understanding is they have 80 offices thoughout the country so I'm hoping that it will be something like it is here in Portugal which I've been able to explore from top to bottom and side to side during our travels to the various sites. I know that Venice is a about 2 1/2 hours from the hotel we stayed at in Milan and the Glacier ride through the Alps is only 40 mins away by train so side trips to Switzerland are hopefully in my future since I didn't get to do that on our trip there.

Mercnbeth.. you two were the first ones I thought of when I learned this could be possible but I didn't want to say anything in case it fell through or in case Himself decided not to pursue the opportunity. Now that's it's official, I can't WAIT to see you guys again and spend some quality time with both of you and I'm sure that New York thing that Himself has in common with you, Merc, will enable you two to hit it off .. or, you know.. wanna kill each other.. however that New York thing works. ::chuckles:: In any event, it's a date and I did have 8 days in Milan so I know *exactly* how to get to Prada on the metro! ::GRINS::

Prada! You realize I now have to block you!

The only reason there was still $1 in the bank after our last trip to Italy was that every shoe store (and I do mean EVERY!) between Sorrento and Naples, including the Island of Capri, didn't have shoes in beth's size - 41. she 'settled' for a little red Prada bag. Fortunately, they do export them to LA in that size and she was able to get her Prada shoe 'fix' for Christmas.

she currently has my Italian relatives (co-conspirators) doing research to make sure she doesn't get shut out during our next trip to Italy coming up in May.

beth shopping in Milan with you as a local guide!? I may have to re-think this duel citizenship idea!

Thanks angel!

Greece is on our bucket list, too and it was as real toss up between going there for my 50th or going to Egypt (although that's on hold right now). I am *very* grateful for the opportunity he allows me to travel with him but it is mostly it's because it's convenient for him. He can't drive his own car so I get to go because I know how to drive a manual transmission and he doesn't have to depend on cabs for the places which are a bit further away. :D

Just a note to thank everyone so much for their well wishes. I was speaking to a friend in email about the move and it dawned on me how much there is to do in the next few months to move to yet another country. As I said, this is probably going to be temporary, one way or another. If things work well, we might end up in The Netherlands next which is where the parent corp has it's headquarters ... if they go so-so or even poorly in Italy, it would probably be France or Germany as the next stop. The prize would be to get back to the US but Himself is looking at least 5 years down the line for that one *if* it happens and the company decides they want to try to enter the US market. A lot will probably depend on what the economy does there so a big if on that one right now! Thank you again, everyone. I appreciate the support so much and I'm sure Himself would extend his thank you's to you all as well. :)
