Status: offline 		I think they should make unions stronger so people can get better pay. And I would start with reversing what the ' great' Ronald Reagan did to unions with the air traffic controllers strike.

I heard this report on the news tonight, and I foung it interesting.
I am very satisfied with my job, more than I have ever been in life.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't perfect, but few jobs are.
Life is too short to hate and be miserable at work.
Sadly with this economy, many people are going to be dissatisfied for many years.
 
I am happy to report that I am one of the few that actually loves her job.
Of course there some days and weeks that are better than others.
Even though I love my job {most of the time}, there are times and days I feel like
this. 


For those of you in the majority, who DO hate your job, go to this website,
ya might feel better.
 
Stressed at work? Thinking 'I hate my job', 'I hate my boss' or 'I hate my co-workers'?

Status: offline 		What happened to American innovative spirit? I thought whining is more European phenomenon. Maybe things will get better when Chinese will take management over in the future. The picture is not much better in Canada either: lot of useless paper pushing and telemarketing.

Status: offline 		Unions are great Brain - in theory. But when given opportunity they prove themselves no better than the bosses when it comes to naked, unashamed exploitation of the situation that only serves to wreck things for everyone.

Having said that I have never bought into the right wing hostility against unions either here or there; Thatcher did a real number here at the same time Reagan was in power and though some of the roll back was necessary for the nation, it went far too far.

We, you and us, need a new model of business and economics that resolves the traditional "us and them" mentality. We so nearly had the opportunity a year or so back but it was snatched away with nothing more than a few empty words of rhetoric paid to the aspiration. If total economic collapse doesnt bring change, one has to wonder what will.

Status: offline 		Unions only work when there is something to bargain with.  When the demand for jobs exceeds the available jobs the threat of a strike is laughable.  "Oh?  We don't pay you more you are all gonna quit?  Fabulous!  We've been wanting to outsource your jobs anyway!"

I have seen too many times a minimum wage job is posted for one day and the company receives over 300 resumes, many from people with advanced degrees.  Mr or Ms Masters-Degree will take that job because they have to eat.  They will not feel all warm and fuzzy about it.  I know personally several people who are working 2 part-time jobs just to come somewhat close to what they earned before the lay-offs.  Are they satisfied?  Nope.  Unions will not amount to a fart in the wind in the above situations. 

My Master and I were just discussing this last evening.  What ever happened to American Pride?  Made in America used to mean something.  Now it's all about getting things cheap.  Cheap parts, cheap labor, cheap goods, cheap services.  Greed is the real God in which America trusts.

Status: offline 		As most know on here, I was a union member for well over 30 years. ( at&t ) They are both good and bad. The good. You have a place to turn to when things go wrong at your work place. The bad. Incompetance and poor performance are rewarded. Good employees make the same as lazy employees.

Status: offline 		I've had bad bosses, one of them was a drunkard and abusive, and I think it's important for people to have their rights protected. And I might add unions don't always do a good job protecting workers rights. Sometimes you get better protection under common-law, I remember that from a long time ago doing some civil litigation.

I gotta agree. Nursing is a field that has unions in some places. I cannot see a nurse at a hospital, nursing home, ect, believing her rights to more income, better working conditions, and so on are more important than their patients.... yet they have gone on strike. When NY did, i was offered a massive bonus to go there, work for a short 6 weeks, for killer money. I turned them down. One, if nurses there were striking, i figured it must have been for a damn good reason. Two, there was no way in hell i was going to go bust up a strike in NY!

And yes we need to start making things in the U.S. again and most people are underpaid!

I don't agree 100% with everything Unions do, but than I rarely ever agree
with anything 100%.
I thank the GODDESS that I am in one!


Unions may not be perfect {but than what the hell in life IS perfect}??
I have had Union jobs in my life and Non-Union jobs and I have
always been better off in the Union jobs.
The Union I am in now, is better than the other Unions I have been in previously.
IMHO most workers are better off in Union jobs.
Many of the workers that are treated like shit, and have little to no benefits, job security, or
futures tend to be in non-Union jobs.

I thank the GODDESS, when I decide to retire, it will be from MY Union job.

That's the subject of a book titled Cheap by Ellen Ruppell Shell.  She points out all the ways that Americans are obsessed with low costs, with no regard of the way the goods were produced, or for quality considered.  Folks eating the "all you can eat" shrimp don't realize that it's imported from Thailand, and the producers are using slave labor.  The shrimp are full of drugs and don't taste right because they're so prone to infection and have almost no room to swim due to confinement.

The same goes for factory pork, poultry, and dairy.  And we'd rather save 3-4 cents per pound of beef than slow the lines in slaughterhouses - the faster the speed, the cheaper the meat, and the more fecal contamination you have.  The faster the line, the greater the risk to the workers, who are paid crap wages and are imported (legally and illegally) by the corporations.

Instead of paying more for quality clothing, people by crap from Walmart that will wear out in a fraction of the time.

In the meantime, our industries die.  All because of the obsession with low prices.  Companies sell us cheap overseas crap because we continue to buy it.  Stop buying it, demand better local goods, and pay some more.  It'll save money in the long run, and help our economy.
