In the spirit of LadyPact's wonderful post about actually discussing BDSM:

What do people think about paraffin candles as opposed to non-scented safety candles for waxplay?

Is the lower melting point a good or bad thing in your opinion? I've never tried BDSM-specific candles; I've always stuck with white household candles, and I'm interested to see if other people consider them worth using...

I love wax!!!

Personally, I do like paraffin.  I don't tend to use the safety candles.  I prefer others.  I have had fantastic results from the ones that I buy from one particular supplier in Atlanta.  Also, I have a paraffin pot and will substitute with what many folks refer to as 'Jesus jars'.  They have a higher paraffin content than most of the ones that you can buy off of the shelf at the store.

The great thing about wax is that you can let your imagination and creativity run wild.  Everything from dripping it from a single candle to doing full body casts.  You can ladle it, drip it, paint with it....... Just about anything that you like.  It's a really inexpensive way to play with someone who likes bottoming, but isn't necessarily a masochist.

Wax doesn't have to hurt.  (It can, but it's not necessary.)  Most bottoms enjoy the feeling of the warm sensation and find it a very soothing type of play.  For those who do like a bit of pain, you can drip the wax closer to the skin or put votives on them so the hot wax will drip on them unexpectedly.  Fun, fun, fun!

Also, wax can be anything from an introductory stepping stone to mixing in just a bit of kink for someone just starting out all the way up to include other kinds of play.  Knife play can be worked in with it.  After all, the wax has to come off, doesn't it?  LOL.

I could write pages and pages on the subject.  It's a fantastic topic.

If you don't mind me asking, what would you say it was about those specific candles which makes them better?

(The technical aspects of D/s are something I am very much still figuring out...)

i couldn't care less about the wax being dripped on me...well thats not true, i don't like it too hot...but my favorite part is when it's time for it to come off and coming off with a knife is the only way to go in my opinion...lol...something about a layer of wax being peeled off apeals to my fantasy to be skinned alive (a fantasy best left to fantasy, please don't get me wrong here)...but like a new born creature, forced to come out of it's shell all raw and barely ready for life...

ok...i know i am weird...

ive only experienced the proper bdsm candles in play and i loved it.

having burnt myself on regular candles id say that i prefer the bdsm version because they can get intense but they dont automatically have to. so the not knowing how hot its gonna be from one moment to the next makes it more 'atmospheric' for me anyway.

i also love the heat of waxing when i brazillian wax myself. i had a very kinky experience with that once, with a girlfriend, though im not bi, she is and it was fun.

i just love wax!! - yummy

Candle play is something that I have been wanting to try, and will get too. Sir is into it, so i am happy. I have done research on it before though, and I read a few times beeswax is a no no. Burns to hot, from what I read. Now a days beeswax is not common in most candles, you would have to look for it. I have used it to make my own candles, but that belongs to another lifestyle group. Purchasing a candle from a store the chances are slim in it having beeswax now a days

Personally, I've only used regular candles, but am about to place an order for some safety candles along with some other stuff I'm ordering.  Like lally said, I've burned myself using regular candles and I am a weenie when it comes to that, and honestly I just think it gets way to hot for the "drippee" so I'm gonna try these, hope it works because I like using candles.

The quality of the candles is exceptionally consistent.  When I get a particular shade of red, it is the same shade, melts at the same temp, etc as the very same red that I got before.

The supplier also happens to be the person who taught Me darn near everything that I know about playing with wax.  He makes his own and sells them online and at various events through the Southeast.  He'll be at SELF again this year as a presenter.

I definitely prefer candles made specifically for wax play. I have a friend who makes them and vends them along with fire play equipment at various events and through their website. They also do fire play demos. She topped me on wax play with them last year in one of the most amazing scenes I've done. Fantastic experience!

I've only used emergency candles. In order for an emergency candle to burn longer than a normal candle, it burns at a lower temperature. But considering the fact we always have power outages during the winter, I hate to waste them on wax play. I like wax play, but he isn't too into it.

I do not know the diff in candles...actually could care less....
when I was allowed to request to masturbate, one night I grabbed what was available...a long pink tapered candle and shove it in my pussy.

I was requested to bring it when I saw Sir.  He lit the end of it and when it dripped onto my inner thigh, I was thrilled.

I do not find joy in studying everything I use .... one time I used a cucumber, another time and unpeeled banana -----

Is there a certain type of banana to use or not?  What about a cuc?  Seems so calculating and thus so NOT exciting for me.

I understand what you're saying, but I want to have as much control over the sensations I create during a session as possible, and for me that means knowing what all the available options are and choosing the one I feel is most suitable.

It might not be exciting for you, but for me these posts are extremely informative and helpful...

There's a difference between wax play and masturbating with a candle (and having it lit and a drop or few of wax dripped on you) or cucumber. The wrong type candle used incorrectly by someone who doesn't know better can create a disastrous result possibly resulting in a hospital visit and permanent scars. Not fun.

Some things need to be learned about, preferably hands on with someone experienced in it though not always for everything,  rather than jumping in blind and damn the consequences. Some play is a lot more fun when you, or the one doing it to you, know what you're doing.
