Regarding a long time quote of a CM member (confirmation  available) and now BBC tv series, YES I would ... kill, skin, gut, butcher, cook, then eat my meat.
This is not a joke ... I believe one should NOT have the right to eat meat without being prepared to prove oneself "naturally" as a carnivore. I also believe that one should WASTE NONE (of the killed animal)

I eat meat ... I am stronger for eating meat ... I believe that eating meat is natural. I believe also that many people are enjoying meat that they have NO entitlement to appreciate.

I am physically capable of shooting, gutting, butchering and cooking my own meat. I haven't done it for a combination of reasons, not least of which being my mother didn't approve of a girl hunting and my father never cared for the sport when I was young and now I don't live in a home where I can properly secure a firearm (by my standards).

I know I would have some trouble with the gutting and butchering because I know me and will probably continue to prefer to have others do that for me. However I do agree with you in principle. I have a somewhat similiar view on hunting trophies as I don't see much of a trophy in shooting a deer when you were covered in deer piss to mask your stench, painted up to disguse your shape, spent all day in a stand and were using some sort of fancy armor-plated round with a million scopes.

Take it out with a bowie knife and it's a fucking trophy. [:D]

I don't "own" firearms ... I kinda had the proper killing "face to face" thing in mind. Since arrows/bolts are also projectile killing tools, I'll say that's fair game (wonder where THAT phrase came from ???) for discussion.

I am a carnivore. I don't kill what I eat. I have no problem with this.

littlewonder -> RE: Kill it. Cook it. Eat it. (1/7/2010 7:47:38 PM)

I have no problems with others killing and cooking their own meat as long as it's done humanely.

I grew up around it. Doesn't really bother me but I have never done it and I would never do it. Just have no desire to do so and have no problems with that.

I personally though am not a big fan of meat. The taste most times just doesn't thrill me unless it's fish.

fluffypet61 -> RE: Kill it. Cook it. Eat it. (1/7/2010 7:47:44 PM)

i'm with you, Pirate.  Don't waste it.

Here in West Virginia (USA) they have to harvest deer so they will not exceed their available natural food supply.  Hunters who take more deer than they can use themselves have another option.  It's called Hunters Helping the Hungry.  Web Site HERE.

Through this program they can donate their deer to be processed into 2 pound packages of ground meat and distributed to the hungry - soup kitchens, senior centers, homeless shelters, etc.

i believe that similar programs exist in other states, too.

Wolf2Bear -> RE: Kill it. Cook it. Eat it. (1/7/2010 7:50:27 PM)

Unfortunately this bear is unable to kill nor butcher any animal I hunted for food. Sorry but the last time I went hunting duck and having the damn bird stare at me, I knew right then and there that I was unable to pull the trigger. Since then I have never picked up a rifle and never will! I will cook the meat, just need someone who's skills are in hunting and dressing the meat first!

Hey Pirate,

Good thread. I am an absolute hunter, not always successful, but I love the idea of being connected to your food source. I have shot deer, turkey, rabbit, quail, and ducks. No issue at all with any of it, however I grew up in Maine with a military family and had a 4.10 at the age of 10 or so. I don't agree thought that you need to shoot and kill to be a carnivore, but don't be stupid and pretend it comes in those tidy little packages at the market either.

I love me some backstrap though, especially if it is one of my own [;)].

Now, no whining from the anti-hunters if they eat that fucking burger though. Not cool.

They simply didn't pop into my head because I'm such a bad shot with an arrow, that I would regard it as cruel to the animal for me to try and kill it with an arrow unless I REALLY had to eat! [:)]

Which is another matter... I almost feel like a person should have to prove they are a reasonable shot before being allowed to hunt because we can buy meat at the store. I don't see any reason in an animal suffering pointlessly because some dolt didn't spend enough time practicing. That's probably one of those slippery slope things that wouldn't really work out though.

My last kill was a fucking groundhog eating my heirloom tomatoes, I didn't eat him though, is that still ok?

No joke, got him with my .22.

rockspider -> RE: Kill it. Cook it. Eat it. (1/7/2010 8:04:51 PM)

In my younger days I used to hunt a lot. Just one day i did find that it didn't give me the trill anymore and i stopped. I will however never stop eating meat, neither will I ever condemn hunting. Certainly not on any moral grounds. An animal which have been breed on a game farm must have the absolute best life it could wish for. If on the other hand you see a chicken or pig farm today it certainly could raise serious misgivings about eating anything originating from there. Even the cattle raising today seems to be more and more intensified. It is certainly not a worthy kind of life for these animals, where as the hunted game has the most natural surroundings to live in.
However i don't go with the idea that only people who can string and gut an animal should be allowed to eat meat. It is not the most deligthfull show on earth and i do have respect for the people who just don't like the look of blood.
The same i only eat fish i have seen alive as that is the way they taste the best. If you buy them alive you clean them your self. A small price to pay for something that delicious. Besides the price at the fishing boat is like 1/3 of the one in the fishshop. Frozen fish? I thought that was for cats alone and i think it is over 10 years since i tasted a fish finger. An experience i shall neither comment on nor repeat, ever.

Why not?  They're *excellent*.  If you find the flavor strong, marinate in a light brine overnight, then parboil with a few teaspoons of baking soda in a pot of hot water for 10-15 minutes before draining and roasting.

AquaticSub -> RE: Kill it. Cook it. Eat it. (1/7/2010 8:09:31 PM)

Rock,

Don't know if you know this or if there are any in your area, but if you visit a local farmer's market you can sometimes find smaller farms that will let you tour the farm to make sure the animals are being kept to your standards. Once the weather gets warm, I'm planning on making a visit to one of the local places. Hopefully I'll be pleased with what I see since they offer home delivery and that would be nice!

It does bother me that when I buy meat at the store, I usually have no idea how it was treated.

Well that little cutie would proberly be considered a protected species in my garden. However we do shoot cats around here[sm=blasted.gif]
Foxes, rabbits, fallow deer, pheasants, badgers and a few more is on my protected list on my property[:)] The only danger they face is from a 300 mm tele photo lens. But I take a pheasant or a rabbit if my friend shoots any somewhere else.

Not common here ... but edible ... so my vote is ... if it were baked right, it should be fine. Or you could have donated it ? (recipe suggestions from groundhog territory always welcome)

While I can't shoot and gut Bambi, I have no problem with Slave doing so. We have both cooked and eaten it.  Now when they start issuing tags for tourist season... But that's a whole other story, not sure I could eat it if they did.

SweetPoosy -> RE: Kill it. Cook it. Eat it. (1/7/2010 10:16:43 PM)

Well, my fa-vo-rite method is what Bill Engvall calls "The Drive Hunt". Seriously, I've killed at least two deer with my vehicles, and I've totalled one car, a Toyota Avalon, not a small car. So right now it's Me, 2: Deer, 1. When I hit the one that totalled my car, it was a 4 point mule deer buck, and I was going about 95 miles per hour (150kph). I sent the EMT's to see if it was salvageable, but alas...I had pretty much totalled it. Even the horns weren't to be found ...intact, that is.

The other one RAN INTO MY JEEP! It killed itself! Damned suicidal deer! Bambi couldn't get any nookie, so he took himself out. I went to report it, and by the time I came back, someone else had claimed it.

If I were to go out hunting, I'd likely use a longbow or a rifle, depending on the game. I'd personally rather NOT have to clean my kill, but I would if I had to. At the rate the local javelinas and mule deer are going, I'm going be be doing a bit of poaching this year...the damned javelinas break down my fence to get into my orchard, and the damned deer jump my fence to eat my 28 varieties of rose! They seem to be partial to certain varieties...usually my favorites.

This is the scene that greeted me one day in July...there were a total of 8 juvenile deer in my yard, the little bastards wouldn't all pose together, so I did what I could with the picture. They roam around usually at night, but hey, I have such a nice buffet at my place, they are happy to break curfew.

BTW, it's Javelina season here, and as far as I can tell, there are still permits left. Come and git one of these varmints fer me, hokay?
