This is the "General BDSM Discussion" board. Your posting is out of context.

VampiresLair -> RE: Scammers (1/8/2010 8:28:13 AM)

most other users on here do not have the skill / motivation

I have the skill, I lack the motivation. What does it really matter where they are? If they are legitimate people then it will come out eventually why they have been using a fake location for their whereabouts (stalkers come to mind, I know quite a few people who now claim to be from Alaska or Canada to throw stalkers off their trail). Id they are not legitimate, you will know that as well. Someone can be sitting in New Jersey and say they are from Nigeria and scam you. They can be sitting IN Nigeria and be perfectly honest. Location doesnt really amount to much. I worry more about the actual communication, rather than where they say they are from. If they choose to lie, that just tells me right off they were never a good match for me to begin with.

As a web professional, I must reply that indeed much can be done, by people who have the will.

What it takes is the will to bring about improvements.

Great...so you'll be volunteering your time and resources to get this taken care of?

CollarMe is a free site and as soon as you start to add more bells and whistles, to make it like alt or other adult sites, I have to wonder how long that status will continue.  I, for one, prefer using common sense to avoid the undesirables as opposed to having this become a pay site. That's me using my will....no software required. [;)]

Most of the time that means turning off the computer and heading out into the real world....which I'm doing right now!

In my opinion, the more the website does to help determine how honest / genuine the users are, the better for the community at large and the friendlier for the users individually. Collarme has grown despite its reputation as being overrun with fakes and scammers. I believe it can be made even better if many if not most of them could be weeded out.

People who choose to lie on their profile for whatever reasons should face disadvantages compared to people who are honest.

Jack

There are more people willing to volunteer their time than you might think. The previously cited community "couchsurfing" for example is entirely free as well, yet thrives on using FREE software implemented and expanded by VOLUNTEERS to make itself better.

Don't you think it's a great waste that many thousands of users have to spend their time filtering out crap when some intelligent improvements could go a long way towards saving them a lot of time?

GreedyTop -> RE: Scammers (1/8/2010 9:06:54 AM)

Oddly enough, I dont find myself having to "filtering out crap".  Block delete, report work well for me when I do run across the rare scammer email.  Profiles?  not my problem.  if someone is stupid enough to fall for the scams, that's THEIR issue, not mine.

Perhaps you ought to reconfigure your profile?

CarrieO -> RE: Scammers (1/8/2010 9:11:17 AM)

Jack,

As Antipode said, this thread has nothing to do with General BDSM so don't be surprised if it gets moved.

Did you happen to do a search on this topic before posting?  If so, you would have found not only numerous threads concerning this issue but also many who have offered similar solutions.  In fact, these types of threads are almost as frequent and as time-wasting as the scammers themselves.

If you feel you have a legitimate answer to this problem, the people on the forums aren't the ones you need to address this with.  Why not contact those who operate CM and run your idea past them.  I'm sure they'll be able to give you a much better answer as to why they have chosen to run this website the way they do.

Best of luck and with that I really am out of here....[:)]

To be fair, I respect your attitude that is it not your issue. But certainly you could find it in yourself to morally support those who think that the website could be improved, at arguably no detriment to yourself?

JackandSophia -> RE: Scammers (1/8/2010 9:22:35 AM)

Some people expressed that this subject might not be on-topic. I respectfully disagree. It is not Casual Banter, it is very much a Community Discussion as it's very much about the usability of the collarme BDSM community. In the Community Discussion board, General BDSM was the most suited in my opinion.

Just wanted to provide my reasoning, I did briefly consider where to post this.

I use people, not profiles and not collarme, I USE WOMEN AT HOME IN MY SPARE TIME, YOU CAN TOO, I WILL SEND YOU THE MATCHBOOK that tells you how you too can become the most admired person on your block.

JUST DO IT!!!!!

Ron (a community of one, as we all are).

GreedyTop -> RE: Scammers (1/8/2010 9:28:08 AM)

no.
This is a free website.  It is not my job to censor others morality, nor is it theirs to monitor mine.  I trust (or rather ...would HOPE) that others are adult enough to monitor their actions online, regardless of which site they may be using.

DomMeinCT -> RE: Scammers (1/8/2010 9:33:35 AM)

As a web professional, perhaps you can offer your services (gratis?) to the owners to make improvements.

Yes, but also resources are needed to do that.  You could be the answer.

If there was a way to drive women to the point of insane horny stupidity quickly and easily online, they'd do it.

Steven:  All it takes is dark blue mail.  Sigh.  They just haven't figured that out yet.

Jack:  The more individuals report a profile, the faster the autosystem takes care of it.  But I have a question... since Collarme provides an email system, why bother going outside of CM?  Why go to yahoo until you've had some real emails back and forth and can tell its not a bot or a guy in Nigeria?  Doesn't it make sense that ONLY scammers don't care if a bazillion people have their yahoo addy?  Why not just report when you see a yahoo address in a profile, then hit the HIDE button so you don't have to see them anymore, and move on to the next one?

Ron...the Post Office politely asks that you remove the matches from the matchbook cover before mailing....

whats amazing is that there are so many guys on here complaining about these scammers, so it must be irritating, not just on the boards either, its on profiles too. peoples whole experience here are being ruined by these people.

its all very well to take the piss out of people who are getting peeved and aggravated and asking for help, but actually, what is being done about it. is the internet that available that perfectly ordinary people have to endure this crap every single ime they log on.

maybe a bit of fighting back is in order.

personally though, i just ignore them and move on, but it sounds to me like there are guys getting dozens of these emails daily - and thats just taking the piss.

I often run into profiles which refer to outside email addresses. Being internet-savvy I'm able in the course of the dialogue to tell if the person on the other end sits say in Nigeria, not in USA or UK or wherever.

When I subsequently report the collarme profile, nothing happens. I assume this is because the system is automatied and most other users on here do not have the skill / motivation to figure out if the other person lies about their location / intention.

Can anything be done?

For example the collarme profile atmashere refers to an email address which is operated from a user in Nigeria.

Isn't it safe to assume that anyone in Nigeria is a scammer?

Thoughts and opinions are welcome.

Jack

to be on the safe side i wouldn't send them all my money at once

Well here is the problem right there in bold. Are you really upset about the scammers or are people that you are responding to not as "honest" and "genuine" as you would like them to be?

Really, for those that can't spot the scammer a mile away, I pity them. But the reality is that those people are always going to find themselves being taken in no matter what is done.

When it comes to how "honest" or "genuine" people are, yes some are out and out liars and wankers. More often than not though, people are being labeled as "fake" because they didn't respond in the manner that someone thought they should. It is not your place, or mine to make that determination.

I would say that I'm sorry you are so truly bothered by this. But in my HONEST and GENUINE feeling is that I really don't sympathize with you at all.

You came here and essentially called people ignorant and lazy by saying we likely don't have the skill/motivation to do anything. In my opinion, you are getting bothered by something you are probably causing yourself and I just can't bring myself to feel anything about your issue other than humor. If you want a website that is so much better, and you are so much more capable, go start your own website and run it as you see fit. Around here, we have enough whiny doms and don't need any more.

I am wondering what these people that are complaining have on their profiles that attracts all the scammers. Master has a single profile on CM and I have asked him how many of this sort of email he gets in a week. He has had one or two a week if that. I don't see that as much of a major problem but maybe others do.
