Newt resigned for the same shit Clinton got busted for, only he had the integrity to resign, unlike Clinton

Oh for God's sake.

The ability of Republicans to rewrite history never ceases to amaze me.

Newt resigned under pressure from his own party.

Washingtonpost.com: Gingrich Steps Down in Face of Rebellion

Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), the charismatic soul of the Republican Revolution whose members turned on him after unexpected losses in Tuesday's election, announced yesterday he will quit as speaker of the House.

His stunning exit came only hours after longtime friend Rep. Bob Livingston (R-La.) told reporters he intended to challenge Gingrich when House Republicans meet Nov. 18 to pick their leaders for the 106th Congress.

Ahhh...why are you using facts????  It takes all the fun out of the BS from the right

Personally, I do not think anyone should have to step down because of something they say, this whole PC shit has gotten way out of hand.

It's getting to the point no one can say anything about anyone with out someone being offended.

I didn't realize she had a new book coming out.

This is a great example of what happens on the news today, everyone talking over everyone so no one has to listen to what the other person is saying.

Everyone just keeps talking and whoever shuts up first loses

Obama: Fire Imus

Obama First White House Contender to Call for Imus' Firing Over Racial Slur

In an interview with ABC News Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., called for the firing of talk radio host Don Imus. Obama said he would never again appear on Imus' show, which is broadcast on CBS Radio and MSNBC television.

"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."

Obama said he appeared once on Imus' show two years ago, and "I have no intention of returning." Racial Slur Stirs Trouble for Shock Jock Last week, Imus referred to the Rutgers University women's basketball team, most of whom are African-American, as "nappy-headed hos." He has since apologized for his remarks, and CBS and MSNBC suspended his show for two weeks.

"He didn't just cross the line," Obama said. "He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America. The notions that as young African-American women -- who I hope will be athletes -- that that somehow makes them less beautiful or less important. It was a degrading comment. It's one that I'm not interested in supporting."

Well, the kerfuffle has made it to the news here now. Apparently, so we are told, Reid said that Obama had a good chance of election (as someone of African appearance) because he had a lighter skin colour and could speak with or without using Ebonics as he needed.

In other words, Reid was stating the bleedin' obvious - that a substantial number of US electors aint quite got over that stuff in the 60s. ie, Reid wasnt being racist but indicating that many in the US were.

DarlingSavage -> RE: GOP calls for Reid to resign (1/11/2010 12:28:25 PM)

Whoa! I have to agree that Imus' statement was definitely WAY out of line. That's an understatement. He should definitely be fired.

Exactly.

It was stupid to say publicly. Beyond that, just reality.

Hardly comparable with comments about electing a segregationist president.

housesub4you -> RE: GOP calls for Reid to resign (1/11/2010 1:20:04 PM)

if you look back over history, you will see that the term "negro" was a standard form of discussing the negro population before 1970.  Even MLK used the term "negro" and the term "black" was not used until the late 60's early 70's when young black people started using the term "black power" (MLK never used the term in any speech, it was always negro).  The use of the word black before then was an insult which is why MLK never used it.  The term "African American" got started in the late 80's early 90's when PC wording went all crazy.

Gee...I got to use my sociology degree...well worth the 20 grand

As a side note a certain ILL Governor, begging for TV time before he goes to jail used this little story to publicly say he was sorry to O'bama for saying he was blacker then Obama, before he tried selling his Senate seat.  Gee he will make such an Ass out of himself when he is on Trumps show this spring.

cjan -> RE: GOP calls for Reid to resign (1/11/2010 2:54:43 PM)

I won't defend Harry Reid. He's a scrote. He was a dirty politician when he got started in Nevada and was on the gaming comission. He's a politician. What do you expect ?

Time to get in the box, Harry.

If you follow the game, you had to know this was coming.

GOP Chief:  Reid should step down

A new book about the 2008 campaign is quoting Senator Harry Reid as saying of then candidate Obama, "no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

Anybody remember Senator Trent Lott being forced from his leadership position over a statement that wasn't nearly as directly racist?

Can we say "double standard?"

Rich, Harry Reid is one of the most popular topics of the day.
I have heard what he said several times, and I have mixed reactions.

Yes, as a person of color I find it and him offensive.
Do I think he should step down?  Not necessarily!
I turned to BlackVoices and read a commentary from Boyce Watkins a Black PhD, I agree with Boyce!

Here it tis!

Is Harry Reid a Racist? Lets Talk about it - BV Black Spin

I agree with all 3 points, at the end of the day "Let's Talk About It"!
Especially since so many state that race is NOT an issue.

Race in America and most of the world IS an issue, President Obama being elected and being a Black man, IS
a big deal, and there are plenty of people {IN BOTH PARTIES} that
believe in sterotypes! [;)]

Ya wanna use Larry Craig as an example, or would you prefer Guv Sanford?

domiguy -> RE: GOP calls for Reid to resign (1/11/2010 6:28:36 PM)

Reid is an idiot, somewhat truthful, but a moron no doubt.  But ya gotta love the word "negro."  It's a fucking hoot to say.

This is what Lott said:

"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for President, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either."

Is this close to the same thing?

If you can't see the difference there is no point in continuing forward.

What Lott said is ridiculous. he is talking about voting for a known racist for President. A man that if elected would have had dire repercussions for every black person residing within this country...

In 1948 Thurmond ran for President he only carried four states and received 39 electoral votes. In one 1948 speech, met with cheers by supporters, this is what Thurmond had to say...

"I wanna tell you, ladies and gentlemen, that there's not enough troops in the army to force the Southern people to break down segregation and admit the nigra race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches."

If anyone thinks that Reid is promoting the same thing as Lott please speak up.

I implore you to please utilize the smallest level of common sense before you start typing.

Level -> RE: GOP calls for Reid to resign (1/11/2010 6:35:21 PM)

There was a story on the local news tonight, regarding "negro", it's still an option on the census forms. They're going to include a question, in 2020, for crying out loud, asking if people think it should be removed.

TheHeretic -> RE: GOP calls for Reid to resign (1/11/2010 6:38:11 PM)

I was hoping you'd offer your thoughts on this thread, Mia.  Thanks

I'm personally inclined to think that Harry's comments were more, 'closed door realpolitik,' than an expression of racism (I also think Jesse Jackson's "cut his nuts off" comment was completely staged and scripted, but that's another subject), but what interests me here is the display of the double standard.

Do you think Dr. Watkins would be so calm and thoughtful, so willing to look at the bigger issue, if this ugly looking quote had come from the mouth of a conservative?
