Greetings, all-

I am back on line, moved in to the new place, and mostly unpacked (I cannot believe how many books I own, or how hard they are to give away!).

The new place is just lovely- a great space, it feng shui's aspeciously weather I go redhat or black hat, and it suits me. AND- it has a tub! (I work outdoors all year round- baths are veryimportant to me<g>). I am still figuring where the hooks will go, but the space is going to be good for working.

What it lacks is DSL, and I am not sure that the property is wired for cable, so for the moment, I am on dialup (blick!) so I won't be posting as much as I might otherwise.

The move, and other personal issues that cropped up around the same time has been amazingly stressful for me- and many of the friends that lent me strength (even if they didn't know it) are friends I found here on collarme.

Hi Lawrence! welcome back and long time no see! Books <perk> i like books plus you can donate them to a local hospital if you cant find people to take them. Also on another thread there was mention of a swap site in yahoo groups.

I can relate to having a tight bond to paper: I'm STILL mourning some of the books I gave to Goodwill sixteen years ago!

Oh, and I'm still on dialup, so you've got company there, too.

No, actually i feel sorry for Ya......i just moved a couple of months ago and can relate to the stresses of that and i happen to live in an area where there is no DSL, cable, etc available.

Glad you like your new place. If it makes you feel any better about not having DSL or cable, i haven't had a real tub-bath in, umm, i can't remember how many years. (O woe, O plight!) So congratulations on the tub! [:D]

Congrats on the successful move. Moving is utterly stressful for me, so you have my utmost sympathy. We moved in here a year ago, and there are STILL boxes that haven't been unpacked. *sigh*

As for the books...set them free! It's the karma of literature. I actually moved 17 boxes of books from Canada to the US with me, because I couldn't bear to part with them, but since I've discovered bookcrossing and started doing my part to make the whole world a library, I've gotten some wonderful literature karma. I've discovered authors and books that I never would have read otherwise, met some wonderful people, and felt really good about setting books I loved free to the fates to find more people who can enjoy them. (You know what they say...if you love it, set it free....)

I'm not even going to try to express my sympathy for your dial up situation. I can't imagine what hell that must be. Take your frustrations out on a willing butt perhaps?

Damn- I missed you and MizSuz on Saturday- hope you're feeling better...

I did join bookcrossing a while back on your recommendation- But I am NOT gonna enter the 150-or-so books I have to get rid of, 'specailly not on damndialup. I am just going to do a few mass dumps at select locations over the next few weeks.

Bookcrossing is an online community of booklovers. You "register" your books (the site generates a unique bookcrossing identification number (bcid) for each one), and track their journeys. Basically, it's founded on the 3R's : read, register, release.

The initial idea was something similar to Where's George - letting books go "in the wild" and seeing if anyone would journal their travels on the website. However, it's grown much beyond that. There are discussion forums, much like here, and in addition to setting books free to their fates in the wild, people arrange to share books, trade books, etc.

Only about 10% of books set free in the wild are journaled, but it's lots of fun to get an email from the website that someone has picked up your book and taken the time to share their thoughts, then often set it free again after reading it. When you trade/share books the odds of getting journal entries are significantly higher.

Bookrings (one book passed from person to person via the mail) are a great way to see different people's thoughts about the same book. Book trades are a wonderful way to cheaply (for the price of media rate postage, about $1.42 usually) obtain books you want to read.

It can be as simple as registering a book and leaving it in a local coffee shop, or as involved as organizing bookrings/rays/boxes, trades, gifts, etc. There's no minimum involvement. Some people just use it to keep track of what they've read and their thoughts about the books. It's very flexible.

Check out the website (and feel free to check out my bookshelf (Sherria there too)). It's not for everyone, but I enjoy it immensely. I've met some wonderful people, read some fabulous new authors, and gotten my hands on books that I couldn't find any other way.

Oh, and did I mention that it's FREE? Yep, totally free. You can choose to buy "release supplies" from the website, or other merchandise, but I've never done that, and there's no pressure to do so.

Oh really. Please. I am 'good', but not 'god'.

While they do occasionally get a bit runny around the edges, I almost never have to send a date home in jar.

And if you did melt, I'd keep your jar on the good bookshelf<g>.

PS- Believe it or not, I have been in this place just over two weeks and still haven't taken a bath! But even as I type, I have a cigar, a glass of wine, a few candles, " the Wasteland and other peoms",and the tub is filling.
