After the failed attempt in 1923 to gain power by force, Hitler realized that it was more feasible to build the Nazi party up "within the framework of the Constitution" (Bullock 130; [edition is 1962 unless otherwise noted]). Said Hitler in 1925: "If out-voting them takes longer than out-shooting them, at least the result would be guaranteed by their own constitution...Any lawful process is slow...Sooner or later we shall have a majority — and after that, Germany" (Bullock 130)[1]. This ideology is the core of Hitler's German-style democracy: where a leader is chosen democratically, then assumes full power and responsibility over the people (Fischer 170). Hitler's tactics for gaining power changed, but the purpose of his mission, to overthrow the Weimar Republic, remained steadfast. To Hitler, no cost was too high for triumph; in overthrowing the Republic in 1933, Hitler made good on his vow to "destroy democracy with the weapons of democracy" (Grunfeld 109)............This was hitlers democracy or his republic which ever way you want to look at it....The videos of the class I posted are of a man that has studied the U.S. constitution for 23 years and if your american you might want to check it out after all its your republic, your rights.

There are so many holes in Krugman's propoganda piece its ridiculous. He typically exagerrates the value of things that support his arguments, and minimizes the value of things that don't. He's a self-described card carrying communist who believes in redistribution of weatlh, what kind of OpEd piece comparing the EU and US would you expect?

Yes, well Willbeur, he just doesn't have your economic expertise so you have to cut him some slack.

So when did you win your Nobel Prize in economics?

By the way, I've seen this claim abut him being a "self-described card carrying communist" on a number of conservative blogs.  But I've not seen the exact quote.  Why is that?

Supposedly he said it on Bloomberg, but I searched Bloomberg and was unable to find it.

So, being that you brought it up, I'm sure you know where I can find his exact words and what context he said them in.

I'll be waiting for that link.

The ignorance of many Americans, when it comes to foreign politics is legendary. One of the things who really amuse me, is the hard right wingers in USA, who when encountering anything to the left of the republican party, labels it communism. That shows their absolute stupidity. Communism is a form of government, where everything belongs to the state and the state micromanages society under a centralised government under a one party state. That does not exist in Europe any more since the collaps of the east block and has never existed in western Europe.
Social democratic government on the other hand is a capitalistic soceity where the state regulates the overall lines the private sector operates under. It also levies high taxes as the aim of it is to make sure there is education, health care, transportation, retirement benefits, a decent living for the sick and incapable and many more things.
I can say a lot of good things about the USA, but the fact that 50 million people do not have access to basic medical care, meanwhile a talk show host on TV can earn 100 million $ a year and pay lest than 25 % tax, that stinks to high heaven.
Incidentially, all the countries in Europe functions as democratically run republics. Some of them is on paper monarchies, but that has no political significanse at all. The royal families stay totally clear of any political involvement what so ever. It normally is a big political scandal when they forget it

Exactly. But you know it's also got to be said that most of those held to be previously communist or socialist countries in Central and Eastern Europe have made a much better transition towards social democracy with far fewer problems and in much less time than their neighbours in Western Europe.

This could not have happened if the former system, whether it be communist or socialist or whatever, didn't work or function to some degree.

And that is the difference which very few people ever take into account or consider. Unlike the idealistic 'dreams of utopia' socialism in the West in the East it was very much about work, having the means of production and living a productive life which probably goes some way to explaining why it worked far better than it ever could in the West.

Hitler was chosen Chancellor of a coalition government by President Paul von Hindenburg in 1932 after the Weimar govt fell to the onslaught of the Great Depression. He was not first elected democratically by the people.

Germany was a democracy at one time too.
Actually when Hitler took power Germany was a federal republic not unlike the US...no more a democracy than the US...so there goes that Nazi bugaboo

are you guys kidding?

The us is lower canada.

Provable?

Hell yes.

the legal system in this country was changed to a democracy when the new deal was instituted and we left "public law" and went to "public policy".

Now that is not to say we dont have the commie planks in place and the fascist angle as well...

Its all here and it is not possible to catagorize the system as as a whole with one "ism".

It simply is not set up that way, but if you want to get closer to the target of the real look to public policy.  Our friends in upper canada and mother UK can fill us in on that :)
