How One Woman Went to Tax Court and Won Deduction

"The IRS's rules on deducting work-related tuition are complicated and onerous, ultimately preventing most students from deducting their tuition. But this case clarifies the rules and will likely lead to more taxpayers taking the deduction, tax experts say."

From the article:
"As Ms. Singleton-Clarke held fast to her conviction that she deserved the deduction, she drew on skills she developed as a nurse responsible for dealing with doctors who may have infringed hospital rules. That was why she studied for her M.B.A., she says: "I didn't want to feel outmatched by surgeons who didn't want to talk to me.""

She had very good layer. I general, she should have lost the case; there is nothing to cheer. If I remember correctly, tuition can be deducted only if the job description requires her to study in this particular field. It was obviously not the case. It does not matter what she thinks or feels.

It clearly does matter what she thinks because that is why the judge found in her favor and disagrees with your opinion. Since you were not hearing the case it is what you think and feel that does not matter.

HST.

Dude,
You clearly didn't read the article. Ms. Singleton-Clarke represented herself. Also, an MBA or MHA are -required- these days to move forward in one's career.

Still, as I said, study should be part of the job description to qualify. If you make burgers at McDonald MBA would also benefit your career.  Can you use study tax credit? According to your logic all tuition everywhere should be tax credit. I would vote for it (so would educational institutions,  they can push up tuition) but , I do not think it is so now.

After this ruling, it might be the precedent for such.
