And oddly enough the word you used, is one that is too far for me.

Funny world innit

lusciouslips19 -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:37:29 AM)

When a black person calls himself a "nigger" thats one thing, when a jew makes a jewish joke, thats one thing. These are things used by minorities to increase their self esteem and deflate the sterotypes taking control of them.

I think humor when it picks at handicapped, people suffering or ethnic groups is going too far. It makes me cringe and its not funny. Making jokes about the holocaust is like a slap across the face to the jews here. I dont know if you really intended that disrespect but thats what it is. A disrespect to all jews, alive or dead.

NihilusZero -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:38:46 AM)

What are you actually asking? Too far past the tact and sensibility scale? Too far to where it should be censored? Too far to where we should fine or potentially incarcerate recurring culprits?

Are we just talking about what people's tastes are or about how to systematically address potentially offensive humor across the board?

DCWoody -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:38:48 AM)

It didn't occur to me at all that that would be it, I thought it was the joke.....if ya can't use that word even when discussing things being offensive....oh well. Like I said, nothing is too far IMO, but I admit I'm something of an extremist in that respect.

Jeffff -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:39:16 AM)

And I get that. But are you saying you never laugh at others?

It may be obvious that this was brought on by another thread. Is there really such a thing as too far when it comes to humor?

Monty Python comes to mind, "twit of the year race". Isn't that making fun of mentally handicapped? Am I the only one who laughed  when I saw it the first time?

Is there a line to be crossed? If so who decides?

Jeff

If one makes fun of the mentally handicapped how are they going to know? It's not them it's other people who are "offended".
Then there's "gallows humor." When I was in the U.S. Coast Guard in about 1980 we responded to a plane crash off of Grand Bahama island.
It was the stuff of nightmares. Another unit who arrived onscene first radioed us to make sure our recovery teams were armed as a large shark had just taken a bite out of one of the victims.
When we arrived onscene there were thousands of styrofoam coffee cups floating on the water along with all kinds of floatsom from the plane, oil and gasoline and bodies and body parts. Then we saw a teddy bear go floating by.
We were recovering bodies and parts, all of them horrably mangled and burned, one decapitated, blood and guts everywhere and a guy standing next to me saw some intestines hanging out of a body and passed out and I grabbed him before he hit the deck.
One of the CPOs yelled to a guy in a boat to hurry up as we had a lot more "things" to recover on the other side of the ship.
The guy just looked up at him and said, "Just picking Cheif, just picking!" A few guys started chuckling and it actually helped everyone to keep going and get that very nasty job done.

I dont laugh at black jokes, polish jokes, jokes about the disabled. I laugh at myself and absurdities. WHen it makes fun of classes of people, I dont define that as funny.

Lucylastic -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:43:07 AM)

9/11
Genocide for any race creed religion but the holocaust is one of my immediate hard limits
Dead UMs
And I have a sick sense of humour about many taboo things, but those three just make me cringe.
However advertising what gets your goat on a board of many sadists isnt a good idea
not being able to smack people up the side of the head is aggravating sometimes, other times Im glad of my death glare impotence.

It was about peoples taste. the boards are a controlled enviroment.

(and no one should be making fun of my pain, damnit!!)

LaTigresse -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:47:56 AM)

Seriously, I don't know where the line is. I think it is too personal. There is no way a group collective can be formed to determine a distinct line. Just no way.

Even here, this thread, with less that two pages of posts, probably all by relatively decent human beings, we have seen different lines.

What it comes down to, to me, is my own personal accountability and owning what I say with no reason for making excuses. If I have to weasel my way out of a situation my mouth got me into, I probably crossed a line.

Yes, some people are always going to be too sensitive. I could say "boo!" and offend some people........yet that is one I can probably live with.

Add to the above, some people have a flair for crossing lines others of us cannot. Then you have audience.......who is listening/reading? It's a HUMONGOUS gray area that simply has no defined boundaries.

Edited to add: regardless of offensive or not.........I do know one thing for a god damned fact. I do NOT want anyone's freedom of speech taken away just because I happen to find what comes out of their mouth offensive. I can walk away, ignore, turn off the fuckin computer. But I do not want to live in a society that makes it illegal to tell an offensive, horrible, crude, etc etc etc .........joke.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:50:44 AM)

My rule of thumb...if I am not making the joke, don't joke around me.

I make fun of my own mental illness because it is a part of me. If it is a joke going against a general class of humans, dependiing on the content, I might find it tasteless. The jokes about Mie pieps's deaath is completely tasteless and not worth mentioning.

LadyEllen -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 11:57:47 AM)

Is it about relative power I wonder?

ie anything goes if the object of humour is someone more powerful than you/your group and possibly even if the object of humour is someone identifiable as part of your group, but with someone considered to be or actually of lesser power or with someone unable to defend themselves as the object of humour it becomes more and more restrictive in terms of what will fly and what will sink like a stone.

I was curious to see what that other thread was that was being cited. And yes, that was a case of a some pretty disgusting jokes being clearly ill-timed for the subject of the thread.

What can I say? It is interesting to see what passes for humor on the boards and I stand by my earlier statement, someone is going to take offense at pretty much anything anyone can say.

As a Jewish person who had relatives pass away in the camps and one actually survived by being hidden by someone, I found the jokes shockingly tasteless but would not censor anyone.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 12:21:34 PM)

I wouldnt want them censored either. Let their tastelessness stand.

sexyred1 -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 12:23:21 PM)

Yes, Lushy, since words are here forever, our perceptions of people wax and wane with the effect of those words.

LadyEllen -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 12:29:39 PM)

Is there anyone on CM who isnt Jewish? My God, (or perhaps your God), the rumours of the takeover are true?

(hopefully a non offensive Jewish joke)

cjan -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 12:30:18 PM)

Depends, to a large extent on whose bull is being gored, I suppose.

Remember Andrew Dice Clay ? Many people, especially women, found his humor offensive. Consider the context of the time he was in. I thought he was funny.

If I find a joke offensive, I simply won't laugh and maybe think the person an asshole. But I would not try to censor them in anyway. I think that these things eventually find their own level.

pahunkboy -> RE: Too Far? (1/12/2010 12:31:21 PM)

Popeye,  MR/MH, dually diagnosed do know when they are being made fun of.

--  maybe not all the time.  It is easy to conclude that they don't....

I am ok- with everyone here.   I don't think speech laws would be a good thing at all.

I am not looking to make a big deal on this- just piped in to say-  "yeah they know it".

//  continue on folks.
