Just wondered if this was being reported in the US, or in Texas in particular?

The journey of reconciliation began almost a year ago in Huntsville, Texas. Mr Neely, 29, had left the US military in 2005 to become a police officer and was still struggling to come to terms with his time as a guard at Guantanamo.
He felt anger at a number of incidents of abuse he says he witnessed, and guilt over one in particular.
Highly controversial since it opened in 2002, Guantanamo prison was set up by President George Bush in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks to house suspected "terrorists". But it has been heavily divisive and President Barack Obama has said it has "damaged [America's] national security interests and become a tremendous recruiting tool for al Qaeda".
Mr Neely recalls only the good publicity in the US media.
"The news would always try to make Guantanamo into this great place," he says, "like 'they [prisoners] were treated so great'. No it wasn't. You know here I was basically just putting innocent people in cages."

I love the end of the story. They were just putting innocent people in cages. Good Grief. Maybe Mr. Neely should ask why these innocent people are no longer being released to their home country of Yemen ?

I heard this story on NPR/BBC News this morning.  The interview of the two detainees and the ex-guard highlighted the humanity of all those involved.

Thank you for sharing the printed link and video.

It will be interesting to see how the citizens of Illinois will react when these innocent prisoners are relocated to a prison in the middle of their state.

I thought I heard the Illinois deal was off? And that prior to it being called off, the people of Illinois were pretty stoked with the idea of some extra jobs for the local community around the prison?

But more than that, why should they be worried? Are you saying that the prison system that holds and controls the members of some of the world's most vicious gangs, and does that even though they have plentiful collaborators on the outside, cant do the same for a bunch of dislocated nutjobs?

I couldn’t picture him as the criminal chasing kind of police officer however, no lie no lie.

As a service member currently deployed I know several Secret and TS information regarding detainees and can say most who even make it that far out of said country when captured have been on hit lists. You guys (civilians) would be surprised how smart these top level insurgents really are, I'm not saying the chance for an innocent suspect isnt there but I'd put money that when he was captured they were already on a known terrorist hit list which I wont discuss on these forums. In both coverages whether political or this former worker they were broadcasted by the Media please tell me you guys dont believe all that they say. The best truth one can get is from the direct source and I only know some and can disclose even less. I have no doubt jacked up things occurred at gitmo but have reasonable doubt majority where prior "HVT's". Luckily im getting out in 5 months and no longer will have to deal with any of this.

I live within 50-100 miles of the prison in Thompson. Some points:

- The prison would be sold to the federal government and they will be bringing their own guards for the detainees.
-  It was built fairly recently and the claim is made that Illinois will then have fewer slots for our own criminals.
-  Our former governor (Rod Blagovich, you might have heard of him) supposedly was punishing the Thompson political powers that be by not utilizing the prison when he was still in office.
- The possibility of Gitmo detainees being incarcerated here is a huge controversy.
- It will bring money in an area that could use the commerce of those guards, whether they be local or transferred here from elsewhere.
- The public hearing for the disposition of the prison was supposed to be a one time thing. Another hearing is being scheduled, I believe.
- There are supposed to be 3 wings to the prison and only one might be taken over for the Gitmo folks.

Personally, I'm conflicted about the possibility of them being there. They need to go somewhere, but I don't know if it would make this area more of a target. Again, I'm undecided.

Edited to say Thank You for your service, Marine87.

Your problem is that Bush painted himself into a corner and logically they are guilty and dangerous, if so how can they be released or they are innocent, if so how could they ever have been detained for two years?

The two in question claim to have travelled to the country to give aid, obviously it's a rather questionable line of defence but a line of defence none the less. So to oppose that view you need some kind of alternative proof such as witness testimony or object based evidence such as the weapons they had with them when caught. Where is this evidence? If there is no such evidence then it's all based on the views of those that may have got it wrong and with no scrutiny of that.

They are innocent because they were never proven to be guilty, I see this as a kind of traditionalist I know I’m not a modern thinker with all this assuming of guilt based on where they were or ‘sensitive’ evidence lead closed door trials. ‘Your guilty, I say so, here is my evidence on this bit of paper, you don’t have to understand what the bit of paper says or how it proves your guilt just will you please accept that between all the redacted parts appears your name and the words ‘proof of terrorist links’.

I'll point out that when back in the UK, the British authorities having seen all the evidence etc the usa military had, did not consider bringing any charges against them, they are not considered suspects in any way. IMO, that makes it pretty damn safe to assume they shouldn't have been imprisoned for however many years. Rules about either putting someone on trial or letting them go exist for a reason, by getting around them like this the usa has given up its place on the side of the 'good guys' in the eyes of those who think like that.

Given the recent fiasco with the US intelligence services and the very near episode of an airliner being blown out of the sky over US territory, what information they have on these detainees I would believe as suspect and with that, this very near situation and their failure to join the dots, I just wonder what else could have been prevented, perhaps the threat we now have is simply because experts in the field of intelligence failed to do their job. But for these failures, how can they be covered up, hmm, I know, lets blame someone else. So you now have a bunch of detainees, they have neither been charged, tried or convicted, yet they languish in a military prison awaiting what, could it be the intelligence services have them, but are scratching around, just trying to find something to pin on them, they are joining dots of intelligence that doesn't exist.

But, as to the ex military guard that contacted the two ex detainees to release his conscience, kudos to him and also kudos to the ex detainees, it shows there is at least a little bit of truth that comes out of this very bad and very damaging situation.
