You can't go wrong with simple classic pieces. I would take jeans, black pants, good shoes, casual boots, and teeshirts. that way you can mix and match as you feel comfortable and in tune with the group. if you have or can find it (thrifty store), a simple, black, leather or fabric vest. dress up for more formal occasions and down for more casual depending on what you wear it with.
In my opinion, you're both spot on. You can't go wrong with classics and black always works at BDSM events (formal or informal). If you're doing a jeans thing, go with black T-shirt, black jeans, and black shoes. As appropriate and as you feel comfortable, add kinky accoutrements, such as arm cuffs, a collar, etc. You don't need the kinky accoutrements though. For more formal events, the same black theme works, but switch in dress pants, dress shirt, dress shoes, and perhaps a vest per Sylverdawn's suggestion. Once again, if you want to hint at kink, you can add something kinky, but keep the classy theme - perhaps a subtle, dress-up collar or something even more subtle, like a pocket watch with a loop of the chain showing.
There are events that absolutely require fetish attire (rubber, leather gear, etc.), but most events I've been to allow anything classic that isn't just plain street wear. Classic doesn't necessarily mean formal wear. Rather, just look as though you put some modicum of effort into dressing for the occasion and you're good to go. If in doubt, always check with the event organizer.
