nearly four years after setting up, under an agreement to restrict its search functions to Chinese users, Google is considering quitting China after finding the email accounts of human rights activists have been unlawfully accessed.

Search = Democracy

Maybe gmail can stop those annoying math problems to send out mail late night.

I'm delighted to hear it.  China has been screwing us over for years - shipping us stuff contaminated with lead, pirating media, manufacturing capacitors and bolts that failed early and were not as strong as claimed, etc.

They're such a huge market that we've rolled over for them for decades and even granted them MFN status while they've abused trade like no other country ever would.

Good for Google for going with its heart.

Probably has more to do with the ego of Google in terms of only wanting it's search results filtered in-house for the purpose of its ad words advertising.

I’m sure they’d have no problem if the Chinese government wanted to sponsor certain links.

I suppose I should say in fairness that at least the sponsored links are easy to spot because they appear at the top of the results page and they have clever sophisticated software to ensue people aren’t just cramming pages full of unrelated words.

It isn't purely ego as Google gets most of its revenue from the advertisers, but a very good point.

I predict there will be no quitting. The noise is just for  propaganda purposes. In today's world greed always wins.
