ShrewWhisperer -> words words and words (9/6/2004 12:32:18 PM)

The problem with any new science is there is not yet the vocab to go along what is being learned, the same goes with lifestyles. The polyamourous thread got me thinking, we as a comunity are so good coming up with catch phrases for the actual acts but none of us so far have come up with useful terms in the behaviours.

it can't be left to the doms..you get a dozen doms and you'll end up with a gross of differing opions, first is there a dictionary that is being used by the community on the market?...or a website that is considered an authority? *insert wild eyed laughter here* (com'n some of you got that joke)

and when the answers turn out to be no on both counts...something to consider kids, why are we so concerned with labels when the words don't mean the same to everybody?

We label things in the community the same reason we label politicians as Liberal or Conservative. Two words that have vastly different meanings to different people. Labels are useful so you don't have to explain the details every time the subject comes up. Coming up with a label defination is kind of like describing a color to someone. It's brown. Is it chocolate brown or more of a camel brown. No, it's more tan. Would that be taupe or dolphin? Was looking at a clothing catalog recently. The dress color was described as "cinder". What would you think that meant? I thought grey. Nope. Burnt Orange.

It would be nice to have a set of definations to apply to catch words, but we'd run out of labels. There are so many different concepts and everyone has a variation that suits them. It would turn out like the botanical or zoological names. What is it? Kingdom, family, genus, species.... where is sfgrrrl when you need her?

Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species.

That is kind of how it works, isn't it? We either don't try to define things at all, define them only vaguely, or have a whole tree of definitions to work with. Only it's even harder, because we belong to a large number of species simultaneously!

Oh well, complexity keeps life full of surprises.

*Chi-schick* (the sound of a southern shotgun being chambered)....

Son...(or girl...I gotta start looking people up) educated anal-rentive types will be shot on sight.

(and no I'm not flaming, just playing, I love people with education sometimes they come up with the most interesting adverbs during a scene)

Damn, I learned that in 9th grade biology. Isn't that a bit much for showing that I have over an 8th grade education?

We all learned it at one time or another, but remembering it makes you a showoff :-)

Now comes the part where I show my true geekiness by saying it's changed since 8th grade. Now we start with "domain"
(let the taunting begin)

A week ago, in another thread I posted:

"I often find myself resorting to Google before posting, just to make sure that what used to be stated as fact has not turned into alleged falsehood overnight. Even so, I do my share of slipping up."

There... proof! [:)]

Pouring a little more gas on the flames....smile. Regional is also an issue. I was lost in Boston (not that unusual an occurence) when I asked for directions I couldn't understand all of the words he used to tell me how to get out of town! Not the accent, but actual words I didn't know. Area slang has become such a large part of our vocabulary. I enjoy the confusion myself as it has lead to many lively debates. Sundew
