I did, Muse.  It says Google claims it is a bug, and they are working on fixing it, which pretty conclusively confirms the assertion that it has been taking place.

Rich,

Enough. I know you enjoy being obtuse, I know you're capable of following the point when you want to, and these games just aren't my thing.

Play with the others for a while.

No prob, Tim.  It's more entertaining when you aren't carrying the bucket for them anyway.

Have a great rest of the day

Actually, there is a way I've found to suppress Googles suggestions.  I very rarely use www.google.com  I have an old Google tool bar that works the way I want it to. One of the features of the tool bar is that it displays the words (and quoted phrases) on the bar.  Once I go to one of the ranked pages, I can click on the word or phrase to get a search without re-typing my word or phrase into a ctrl-F box.

Lance,
I may indeed have horribly lacking research skills. My sons are always telling me that I do not have good 'google skills'. But I usually find what I want. What I don't find is a conspiracy trying to lead me to the unhelpful answers that pop up, ect. I do like just playing around with google, seeing what certain querries get me. My middle son says that energy would be better put into playing around on Wikki, his fave site, but I prefer Gutenberg.

As for your delemia, which you have already solved, I just thought I'd throw out there - I use Opera. One of it's features is single letter searches. In my address bar, I type a single letter, a space, and then anything i want, and it searches for that on the site the single letter is programed to. Tyep g (space) anything in the world, and it searches for 'anything in the world' on google. type y anything in the world, it searches yahoo. e for ebay, z for amazon, and so on. it is a pretty cool function. and, no drop down suggestions, just as you said.

Maybe it's a regional thing, i dunno.

All I know is that when you type in christianity is you get several suggestions in the drop box starting with: christianity is bullshit.

buddhism is produces a top result of: buddhism is not a religion.

Similar results for the others EXCEPT for islam is... which causes the drop box to disappear.

I had the same experience.

Dare I un-necro this thread by reporting the bug is fixed?

I'm curious as to how many of y'all followed up?  I'm especially interested in those that believed "Censorship at Google" was true.

But, now we have the reverse situation!  First, try "Islam is" to put your paranoia to rest. (You will get first line of "Islam is bullshit.")

Then, try these two searches:

Islam will

and

Christianity will

Well, oh well..... now Christianity is seen in a better light.
I say it again, "Not many people know how Google works."

Well, the fixed it, no doubt about that.

It still doesn't answer the question of wether it was truly a bug or deliberate. I remian inclined to believe the later simply because I know how touchy companies can be about their Public image.

I didn't follow up; I was too absorbed in googling my own name- this is what turned up:

Its rather embarrassing, actually- I hate being unemployed.

If you were a Roman your name would be Phallus Maximus.

Actually, be glad that you didn't. I first thought of it years ago when I went as a Roman Senator (Toga! Toga! Toga!) to a Halloween party. It generated some laughs (as I had hoped) when I first told everybody my "name" but then somebody pointed out that "Big Dick" could be taken more ways than one. That generated even more laughs.

fixed......

Now what do you say about the suggested "Christian will/Islam will" test?

I am mildy dyslexic and if I don't write my responses on Word Perfect (for the spell check and to proof read) first (which I usually don't for shorter responses) it tends to show. Sorry about that.

I presume you mean Christianity will - which brings up "Christianity will end it will disappear" Islam will brings up "Islam will dominate the world."

Both seem pretty negative to me but that isn't really the point, is it? You want me to say that I was wrong and it was just a bug. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. I don't know. Like I said, I am inclined to believe that it wasn't. If I am wrong, then I am wrong. I don't know and, against the grand scheme of things, I ultimately don't care.

Funny how the system works over there...  I tried "islam will" first, got ...dominate the world" as the top hit in the suggestion box.  For "Christian will' it was "power" on top.  Just for shits and grins, I put in "Christianity will" and the only suggestion was "...end it will disappear."

Still nothing to make even the most nervously tempermented Google exec turn the master bath into a safe room.
