yes-  it took me a while to locate a brand of whole wheat bread with out it.

What brand is that, PA? I'd be curious to know if it's one that's available in the Midwest. I always bake my own whole wheat sourdough, but it takes a whole day to rise and when I needed bread last week I didn't have time to make it. So for the first time in months, I bought a loaf of commercial whole wheat that tastes like corn syrup thickened with a little flour. It's inedible; I don't know how i ever ate store-bought bread. If there's a brand out there that doesn't use that crap, I'd sure like to know about it for the next time I get caught short.

We buy Aunt Millies and according to the label they use sugar in their bread. But I agree, nothing beats homemade bread. The smell alone makes me smile.

Yup-  we are exporting Obesity- so that we can sell ya more pills.

HFCS  DOES pack on the weight.

That hadn't occurred to me: there will be a few cereals, biscuits and what have you on sale over here that have been manufactured in the 'States, I suppose. Still, I'll just have to be careful to avoid those brands like the plague now.
I'm surprised they're allowed to import stuff with that in it in the first place, though.

Just read the labels.

We do have some foods that are very good.

I can get alot of the good food even at the surplus grocery store.

Once you know what to look for- things flow rather well.

White, refined, bleached, processed- this type of flour is to be avoided.  Consider it to be SUGAR like a donut.

You can eat it- but only sparingly.

Sugar is not that bad for you.   The key is moderation.  At times I buy the white bread when cash is tight- however- just 4 days- and I pack on the weight.

65% chocolate- I eat every day now for over 2 years.  I dont gain an ounce on it.

In 2010 we still do have alot of choice- but it does require paying attention.

Very true. I just didn't realise I needed to be looking out for it on this side of the Atlantic in the first place. Still, I tend not to eat anything processed or out of tins anyway...

The transnational corporations that - have alot of influence... do test proving grounds in various countries- when they find something that makes money for them- they then use the beta test to then apply it to the next country.

The idea behind CODEX is to reduce nutrients down so that a country can not insist on higher standards.

But yeah- our system is build- that to strip essentials from foods- so that then the corps can sell pills and health services.

There are some 1800 ingredients that they can call "natural/artificial flavorings"-  and it is anyone's guess what they are as they are legally trade secrets.

2010 it is possible to eat right.  Happily.

Thing is... I really like the taste of Coke. I think I'm just going to give it up completely and to just have it when I'm travelling or when I'm back in Europe. American Coke doesn't taste quite the same anyway, and water's better for my complexion :-) .

Still, there's something deliciously ironic in the fact that the very place where the drink was created has corrupted its own recipe to such an extent that Coke addicts seek to find their fix elsewhere [8D] .

Moonhead -> RE: HFCS not just in the food in the 'States, apparently... (1/15/2010 8:02:23 AM)

No question with any of that. I just remember that the EEC didn't allow corn syrup to be used as a food addiditive, so I assumed that they'd take a dim view of food that contains it being imported from outside of the EU as well.
Still, the UK government doubtless regards the EEC's aversion to the stuff as more unwarranted meddling from an agency that's out to check their rabid control freakery and sucking up to whichever idiot's in the White House this year if at all possible...

kittinSol -> RE: HFCS not just in the food in the 'States, apparently... (1/15/2010 8:07:32 AM)

Besides, we all know what happens when Europe starts boycotting American crap. right? We're supposed to just swallow the shit and be thankful for the trade [8|] .

True enough.

Soda was invented- intended as a once a week treat.

Not a daily chug.

If you would not rub it on the face- then why put it inside?

WATER my friend.   WATER.

The diet stuff's going to be free of any corn starch as well, come to that.

kittinSol -> RE: HFCS not just in the food in the 'States, apparently... (1/15/2010 8:31:27 AM)

Hunky, no worries, I don't chug it daily.

Well, not the Coke anyway: hmmmmmmmmmmm, protein for breaky [8D] .

I dont know anything about corn starch.

I think- tho that nutrasweet and that class of drugs is toxic.

I did for many years.

I got off of all that about 6 years ago.

:-)

Oddly enough I dont get any cravings for pop- ...none.

I think they're worried about aspatame being a cancer risk. Not sure about the other artificial sweeteners, though. (I wouldn't touch anything with sorbitol in it with a barge pole, though. Your arse won't thank you for eating or drinking anything with that in it...)

I dont know exactly how harmful these items are.

I do know that I no longer embrace these chemicals.  In long term- I cant see how they can be good for you.

Moonhead -> RE: HFCS not just in the food in the 'States, apparently... (1/15/2010 9:57:05 AM)

My concern about sorbitol isn't at all long term: it either gives you the shits something wicked or completely bungs you up. I'm not keen on either.

Termyn8or -> RE: HFCS not just in the food in the 'States, apparently... (1/15/2010 10:53:23 AM)

"If anybody knows how to get hold of European or Mexican Coca Cola (made with cane sugar, not that corn syrup crap) from a reliable online supplier, I'd be really grateful for the tip. "

I heard about Kosher Coke not too long ago. It seems like they typically sell a bunch of it during Passover season. It has a yellow cap and costs about twice as much from what I've seen. A quick search indicates that if it has HFCS in it, it will not get a pareve. Google came up with a few suppliers, but I didn't hear about it from there. Someone told me they saw it in a store. So somewhere out there it should be findable without having to go overseas.

It seems to me then, that anyone who wants to avoid HFCS could just look for the little K. I wonder what else they don't allow. Kosher foods may be the key to better eating (or drinking). I have found a few things in my quest to eat better. I like Kosher bread (hear that Hunky ? no HFCS), Kosher salt must be better than regular table salt, damnear anything is.

Actually the sea salt I use is probably more Kosher than a Rabbi, as 50% of it was harvested from the Dead Sea. Now the only problem is, do I go to hell for putting Kosher salt on pork ?

At any rate, I am a label reader these days. I don't even want sugar in my food, at least in it's refined state. But that's just me. I think even sugar is poison, but not as powerful as HFCS, and nowhere near as poisonous as aspatame. I still avoid it.

I pulled my sweet tooth a long time ago, and it seemed to have a positive effect on the other 32. But I am used to it. Sweetener of any kind in tomato sauce is sickening to me, and when I used to drink coffee, one time I grabbed the wrong cup and almost threw up because it had sugar in it. I can't expect others to be like this, especially when we generally pump kids full of sugar from day one almost. (then wonder why they can't sit still)

There is a new sweetener out, well not new but just got approved recently - stevia. It is purported to be healthy, but might wind up like aspartame. Time will tell. Aspartame is not a poison per se, but becomes one in the body some time after ingestion.

I have no religion whatsoever, but I seem to agree with some things that are disallowed in Kosher foods. I wouldn't mind knowing more about just how that is determined, I'll have to research it sometime. From what I hear, Kosher is more a religious thing, but if that results in healthier foods, great.

T

If I need to sweeten anything (which is quite rarely, because I actually prefer salty, savoury things to sweet ones), I add unrefined brown sugar. I use real butter. I use as many real ingredients as possible and keep away from refined, manufactured food stuff which isn't really food, but actually an experiment in chemistry. Moving to America from Europe has been tough in that respect.

I use real butter.

I rotate brown and white sugar- try to use honey too.

More and more people are reverting to a healthier way.
