Status: offline 		  So, I'm about 20 minutes from having to get back on campus, and take an exam for a class I rather don't care for.  As part of prepareing for this test, I will be purchaseing "mentos of a damned."

The Mentos of the damned are only to be purchased when going into a test that meets one, or all of the following criteria; the exam has no issued study guide, consists of more than one major essay question, and or studying amounted to looking at the text book, and weeping with dispair (or you wept with despair when prepareing to purchase the text book, and opted not to). 

The Mentos are to be offered to anyone within arms reach of you.  But first you must ask if they've studied much.  Anyone who expresses confidence is to be denied the mentos (as clearly they're not damned).

In every test that I've taken useing this method, I've either gotten a low range A (91-93) or a high D.  I'll take those odds over the usual.

Anyways, anyone else do such similar acts of craziness before taking tests?

Status: offline 		Test anxiety is a serious thing. Many students are affected by it. Believe it or not, try chewing gum. It has been proven that chewing gum before and during a test results in higher overall scores and less test induced anxiety than people that do not chew gum. The local schools do not allow chewing gum in school. The only time they do allow it is when they have the testing from the state... so this is just not hogwash.

Also it is good to get a full nights sleep before the test instead of cramming all night and taking the test when you aren't rested. That being said, if you studied and know the material, confidence will also be a factor.

Status: offline 		haha   these were great..  I really might try the mentos thing.  What I do is if I feel I did not prepare for an exam well enough, I freak out and tell all my closer friends in class im pretty much screwed...   then I get a little pukish   I find if I tell myself I did bad I end up getting a B and I'm happy considering the effort put into some of the tests I've taken.  Might try the chewing gum and mentos though....

Status: offline 		Modern Middle Eastern History (so basically the Islamic Empires until May 2006).

I do in fact study, it's just the extra little rituals for luck and such that give the illusion of further control over tests.

That and you can get burned out if you take such things too seriously.  For me it's my own little way to be weird, random, and draw some enjoyment from stressful situations.

Status: offline 		Tips for getting better test grades (seriously ... they have done studies of these things):

1 - sit in about the same place every day for class, and in about the same place for the test (if the test is given in the same classroom/lecture hall.

2 - follow any pre-class rituals before the exam.  i.e. you always go to the student union and get a cup of coffee before class, do the same before the test. 

3 - stay hydrated and stay rested

4 - peppermint - either gum or hard candy will work, but peppermint honestly has been shown to stimulate memory

There was another one that my professor used to tell us to do, but of course, I can't remember it LOL maybe I should get some peppermint ...

Status: offline 		coffee,coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee coffee, bouncing up and down on chair.  I always do better on a test if I am wired for sound.  I do better after extra long study session the night before, then lots of sleep and then way to much coffee, coffee, coffee and more cramming for the test right up to and including actually walking into walking in the room.  This is all extra studying as I have studied all the way through the semester.  Grin. and don't forget the coffee. Actual studies show that your brain works faster when wired for sound.  I also don't wear underwear for a test, shrug, seems to work.

Status: offline 		I have a lucky dracula figure I have had since aged 5. he is 3" tall, and has accompanied me to every exam except 2, which I failed. He also now accompanies me to every job interview.

I take a bottle of water in with me, to which I add one polo (mint lifesaver?) read random passages of any related book, right up until entering the hall, and finally, draw a trianlge with a circle above, on the bottom left of the exam paper, just incase the marker is a freemason

Hope the test went well.

Status: offline 		The test went, "well."  At least I think it did.  This professor has a nasty habit of vastly understateing what he expects though, so I can't really be too certain (the 2-3 sentance identifcation questions really need to be closer to 6-10 sentances, or at the very least the better part of a page from a bluebook).  Still, I know my World War One era treaties pretty well, so I imagine I got a decent score out of the essay at least.

I also always mark bluebooks in the following fashion; if there's not going to be more than one bluebook, the book's number will always be phi.  The "section" line will always been filled in as "8" (an allusion to the section 8 discharge you get from the military if you're loony).  I rarely put my first name on tests, and just to be cheeky I do my student number in a vertical stack by twos.  That's less of a for luck thing, and more of a "Pavel is weird" thing.

Finally, if things are going to be really bad (this is less of a test thing, and more of a going some place unhappy, etc), I've got the ID plate from one of the plane's grandad flew on (long story), at the very least it reminds me that things could be worse

Yes. When your head shakes, your eyes have pulsing black waves, your heartbeat is definately THERE, but following no such thing as a regualar pattern, and your sweat, blood (seen in the nose bleeds), and...well, other liquids, all start smelling of cheap esspresso.
thats when you switch to water for 2 weeks.

1. Recite the final speech from Blade Runner while coming off of the buzz ("I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams ... glitter in the dark near Tanhauser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost ... in time, like tears ... in rain. Time ... to die.")

2. Insist that elmo (or somthing else cute and fuzzy) is outside, and refuse to leave the house until someone "frag and clears" the bushes.

3. Whisper in a soft voice "I see dead people."  Then ask someone random in your current location if they're dead.  When they respond with a negative, simply say "false alarm."  If they respond with a postive, whoa boy, you've got other problems.

Status: offline 		Just keep in mind that there is a good chance on a college campus that whoever you randomly ask is also cranked on caffiene and is likely to answer "yes" just to watch you freak out ... and if you are really lucky (unlucky?) their friends will also be on an overdose of coffee and will ask you "who are you talking to?"

LOL I can relate to that! When given a choice between studying for a major exam or sorting socks...the socks suddenly take on a DefCon level 8 priority!
