Just reported on BBC; 100,000 illegal immigrants from Haiti have been granted 18 months permission to remain, as well as permission to work in the US. The decision has been made because its not safe for them to be returned home and because its hoped they will work and remit money home.

Makes sense to me, although apparently there is already adverse criticism that this 18 months will become permanent.

I say let them stay Lady E!
The rest that want to get here bad enough, need to find a way to get to Mexico,

and then cross the border with the other illegals coming here.
I personally would be real pissed if they attempted to make them leave.

Lady E, will they be getting amnesty in the UK and all over the world?

No the rule is the first country they pass through is where they must stay.

We are an island thus people have to swim here or be shipwrecked here to claim asylum, these are the rules ask just the conservatives.

I dont think we have many (maybe any) illegal Haitians Mia. Quite a few legal ones though, which came as a bit of a surprise.

I would expect France has quite a few though

LadyE, I don't think most people would be against letting them stay for 18 months.
The problem is that we in the U.S. still have some 300,000 Central Americans here on T.P.S. from Hurricane "Mitch" way back in 1998! That's been for 11 or 12 years now! It's time for them to return to their respective countries, I don't understand what our govt.is waiting for. Also, who knows how many from Bosnia and Kosovo from what,....1996? They should have been returned long ago.
The U.S. govt can't continue to lie to the people about things like this. Eighteen months means eighteen months.

Although not a perfect anology, I look at my country as I do my own home.  Let's say my neighbor's house caught fire and they needed a place to stay for a while.  C'mon over!  We'll help you out until your house gets rebuilt.  That's cool.

The neighbors just abondon their own property and stay at my house permanently cuz my house is nicer than theirs ... NOT cool.

Guy knocks on my front door, says he's hard on his luck and can he mow my lawn for $20, you betcha, I'll help out.

Guy breaks in my house through the bathroom window, camps out in my livingroom, eats my food and says he's gonna stay cuz he mowed my lawn and besides my house is nicer than his own... I want the cops to forcibly remove him.  And no, I don't want to pay his medical bills when he cut his hand on the window he broke.

Maybe the government is waiting indefinately, for they know for industry to prosper, one of the things it needs, is a readly supply of people, and with that, people who will work long hours for nothing, nothing cannot be had, people require food, clothing and a shelter, but immigrants will work for an absolute minimum wage and that, is their quality. I just wonder how many industrialists have an ear in the government and to be cynical how much profit is being made by the use of cheap labour. I daresay, if  US citizens decided they could work for the low pay an immigrant gets, the immigrant problem will be sorted out quickly, they would not be required and then seen by government as a drain on resources, so every effort might be made to repatriate them or generally, just get them out of US territories.

The above theory also goes for the UK and any other country immigrants are attracted to.

Aneirin, I don't know about the U.K. but in the U.S. we don't have any shortage of high school drop outs, people with "degrees" or people on welfare who could work.
I don't know about that minimum wage stuff though, I'm of the mind that a working person should make a good weeks pay! Why not, it's good for them and good for the economy.
If you're a working person in the U.S. today you should be making $800 to $1,000 per week which is not a lot of money.

The trouble with people on welfare, or high school drop outs, is they have that thing we have all been educated in, expectation, which basically transpires as what one should receive in return for labour and skills traded. If the expectation is not fulfilled, or the understanding that the expectation will not  be fulfilled through gaining low paid employment, there are other options to pursue, crime is one of them and perhaps for the lazy, non savvy, or more humanitarian amongst the unemployed, welfare ensures a basic living whilst in the latter category personal beliefs can be maintained by living on welfare. Government is seen as a faceless uncaring organisation that  is controlled by laws and statutes, it is easier to take money from government than it is from actual people via crime. Perhaps there also exists the thought that as government permitted and fostered expectation, as it was good for the economy, then the government can help out when the expectation is not being met.

People that come from other countries that have a lesser standard of living might be seeing what the host country's nationals can't see, so the immigrants are pleased to take the work as it might be a whole lot better than what they left behind.

I wonder how often it is that there are immigrants from as wealthy counties, or wealthier countries, would they take the low paid jobs the nationals would baulk at, or are their expectations higher.

There is a thought that in the UK at least, as soon as a person signs on for unemployment benefit, they become known more so than before, ( if indeed people are known before) to the UK intelligence agencies, as it was thought the lack of gainful employment is a breeding ground for political dissenters and activists. In short employment with long hours and pay keeps the mind away from thoughts of challenging the status quo, one is basically too tired and to be fair, has dreams achieved by pay, either payment outright, or credit that is made available via being employed. Easy credit, trapped into employment and there less risk of a challenger or activist being born out of poverty.

When my great grandfather came to the U.S. in 1880 from Sligo, Ireland "welfare" was; "If you don't work you don't eat."

Yet in Ireland, at the time, welfare was available, but it was wracked with extreme humiliation and what was given was inadequate, but, it was there for the lucky of the most desperate, similar set ups have existed elsewhere, usually via church involvement.

Welfare, is a half way position in a civilised society, as those on welfare have a level of contentment and are there less likely to be a problem. Those with no means of sustenance beyond welfare are a threat to all, both the status quo and the minnions alike. If gainful employment is not an option due to poor expectations, then welfare is good to have, it may go some way to reduce crime against the haves. If the haves are spending all their time and money repelling boarders , they are not contributing to the economy, and with that policing starts to cost, the establishment starts to pay out more than it receives.

The instance of crime against people and property, from where does that come from, could it be lack of expectation perchance.
