It is not the fault of the US exactly (having trouble formulating my thoughts here) but seriously I would have thought that a country this large would have the means to push medical and food supplies through.

Like what hlen said, no functioning airport, the port has been destroyed, no government there to hand things out. No roads to drive trucks loaded with supplies on. Destruction far beyond a level we can even imagine.

Maybe if a certain imperialistic nation hadn't used Scalar technology, there wouldn't have been a problem to begin with.

Am I the only one to see the irony of a country rushing to send aid to one destitute country while it sends troops and bombs to another destitute country?

So you’re saying our redistribution of wealth methods are ironic? We didn’t invent Robin Hood, you did. LOL

But why instead? Why not send some to help local homeless people and some to help out the Haitians?

Because I only have a limited amount of funds that I can give. I am not wealthy, or I would donate a lot more to other causes I believe in such as St Judes. If I have "x" amount of dollars set aside, it is My decision to where those "x" amount of dollars go.

I never said that nobody should send their money to Haiti or anywhere else they feel is right. That is a choice that is entirely up to the each person.

I only expressed where and why my money is going where it is.

I'm right up there with Pirate....how can we afford to give away 100 million dollars to rebuild a place that, like it or not, was a poor nation anyway, yet we have starving and homless people right here in the US?????

Just to put that $100 million (which is 33 cents from each American - a fraction of most kids' weekly "allowance" I imagine) into some perspective... we've been spending that much every 3 hours and 20 minutes in Iraq since March of 2003 to secure the world's second largest oil reserves for the former president's campaign contributors (Hunt Oil, et al).

I'd been planning to send a second donation to one of the relief agencies but gotten distracted. Thank you, PAHUNKBOY, for the reminder. Amen to helping the needy here at home too. It's not an either-or thing.

FR-

I don't think it should be an "either/or" type of thing, but how much is "enough?" And with the current economy in this country, people are losing their jobs, their homes and their security as well. Are we wandering the streets in need of medical care? Yes, some are, but no it is not to the extent of Haiti. I think the point is that yes, Haiti is in desperate need of medical supplies and personnel. They are in desperate need of clean up crews to clear all the rubble away.

As far as medical supplies go, I'm curious (because I haven't heard anything) are all the pharmaceutical companies sending any much needed drugs to Haiti? I mean really, morphine has been around forever, and is dirt cheap. The number of generic drugs that could be sent for a few million dollars is a pretty large amount.

But when is it right to say "ok, we've helped you clear the rubble, bury your dead and done everything we can do medically, now it is time to stop." When will attention to the people living in poverty be given?

Doing both is the best case scenario, but we can't be wholly responsible for rebuilding their country at the expense of our own.

I think a penny of every 1$ gets thru.   that is not very generous.

If you are so cold that you cannot see that there are people that will die without some of your assistance then you place no value when it comes to the plight of your fellow man.

The way I look at these global questions is that these people are quite literally part of our extended family. Unless you believe that homo sapiens evolved independently in a second place besides eastern Africa - or (if you are a believer in the Genesis story) that there was a second couple elsewhere in the world while Adam & Eve were doing their thing - Haitians are your living, breathing Nth cousins. They may or may not look as much like some of us as our first or second cousins, but they are just as much our relations. We just go further back.
