There is nothing quite like a good, reasoned debate, where wits and established facts can be discussed and points established thereon can be argued by their respective proponents, making full recourse to adequate consideration of the subject matter to support their assertions. Although they rarely occasion a change in position, such debates are entertaining, sometimes illuminating and always reasonable.

Which is why the last few months here have become so disappointing for me, and perhaps for others. The apparent influx of more and more contributors who seem to have little knowledge of what they speak and do not argue a position but rather post soundbites, snippets of propaganda which in their usage most often demonstrate only the incomprehension of their plagiarists of their full import, has done these boards no favour at all. Even when challenged to justify their assertions, such contributors find themselves utterly unable to respond with anything more than a further and more hostile demonstration of their ability to parrot more of the same.

And sadly I must say, because a debate is to be had, the offenders in these respects all originate from one side only; indeed I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of those supporting the general side of the GOP who deviate from these characteristics and thus attract respect if not accord from the remainder, and still have two fingers left, the application of which may be left to the imagination perhaps.

Just a pity I say.

E

I think there are good contributors (and some not so good) on both sides of the issues and both sides of the aisle here. I'm frankly at a total loss as to how anyone could see it lopsided in one direction or the other.

As Lady E seems too polite to name names, I can perhaps clarify the matter by dropping one: cuckyman. A classic example of an empty vessel making the most noise.

Far too well mannered for my own good oftentimes MH, but I think we all know who I'm talking about.

He's far from the only example, but he's about the worst who's been posting today, in any case.

LadyE, you are one person in here who I've always enjoyed debating with. Even if we only see eye to eye 80% of the time.

Well thanks - same here. Just hope you didnt think you were necessarily included in those described? MH gave a good hint at who they might be.

Such exaggeration, LadyE.  Such a short memory.  Have you forgotten the legions of "Bush/Republicans is/are a doo-doo head" posters who previously roamed among us?  Like within the last week or so?

If we are speaking of something highly specific, LadyE, then please enlighten me.  I thought you were off on a more general rant.

General Rant? You mean the officer in charge of propaganda for the Union army?

No, this is about a small but significant number of posters who, whether they lack the skill or the will, keep on with posting absolute trash that cannot be supported in any way, and which they then refuse to explain or support in any way, and which amounts to nothing more than annoying noise that interrupts the grown ups whilst theyre talking.

It is not aimed at the likes of you, who are one of the few that I can say are worthwhile talking to, even if we dont agree on many things, for the exact opposite reasons that I condemn the targets of my complaint.

You are quick and clever, Lady Ellen.

I suspect I know who it is in particular you are speaking of. The fellow begins a thread with a long message with several obscure links and hardly ever returns to defend his position. He reappears maybe once while everyone else is thrashing at it. I try to just avoid getting involved in his threads. With just a very few exceptions, I have enjoyed debating or exchanging views with everyone on these boards, especially in P&R. Great stuff. I have learned quite a lot. Thanks to you all. Really.

Vincent

Thats the way I feel about it too V - the learning a lot part, not the part about me being quick and clever (though I wont disagree on that!). I think its a huge disrespect to everyone when those concerned post their nonsense, and a huge disservice to the position they claim to espouse and which would benefit from being left to those more able and willing to debate properly.

Perhaps they wouldn't be taking that position in the first place if they had a clue what they were talking about, though?
