Merc-
I would agree with you that local people ought to control their own resources.

But thats kind of a separate issue, and a false dilemma. For instance, much deforestation is doen either by foriegn corporations, or for sale to foreign buyers. Much of it also is done by city dwellers, on land that rightfully belongs to indigenous peoples. So you raise a good point, about taking local control away from people.

But resisting deforestation isn't a matter of bulldozing the rights of others. For instance, there are myriad of ways in which we First Worlders can reduce our consumption of forest resources- eating less meat, recycling, buying local produce, etc.

None of this would hurt anyone here, but would do a world of good.

It's amazing how people think rain-forests are the only green stuff that produces oxygen. Especially, when the vast majority of the planet is covered in water and that the algae within say, a millimetre (ok, i'll be generous, let's say a meter instead) of the surface of the oceans probably out-masses the entire plant load on land by some level of magnitude.

The people of the rain forest deserve to have farms, strip malls, homes, and jobs just as much as you do.

Oh btw, in the presence of increased concentrations of CO2 pretty much all plants grow at an increased rate (assuming CO2 is the limiting resource and in many cases it is). Or in other words, it is a self correcting system. Someone please tell all the global warming people to please go back and take their high school biology and physics again since they must of been one (or more) of the following 1). A sleep 2). high 3). socially promoted or 4). have a below average ability to apply what you've learned outside the classroom. People that are 35 or younger and attended (or are attending) public schools are exempt from the above insult because your faulty education is by design (for those victimized by really bad schools, that means "it's not your fault").

While we have no counter facts about re-forestation and I might doubt those facts anyway

You probably know this, but for those that don't- a rainforest ecosystem, by it's nature, holds a very high percentage of the available nutrients in the canopy, not in the soil. When the canopy is removed (deforestation), the flow of nutrients to the relatively poor soil stops, and evaporation of water from the now exposed soil increases dramatically.

A google search for "desertification" will explain why you don't often hear about reforestation in a rainforest ecosystem.

The flow of nutrients is from the soil up. The only way it returns to the soil is when the vegetation falls over, dies, and rots in place. Nutrients aren't airborne (at least not in any usable quantity).

You don't hear about reforestation of the rain forest because it costs a lot to buy and use heavy equipment so people generally have a plan before they go to the trouble to cut down trees. Whether that's for development or firewood, putting it back the way it was is either impossible (development) or not timely (fuel use). Demanding someone from the third world to please replant the 90 acres he just cut down before cutting down more when all he can see is inhospital jungle just comes off as crazy yankee talk, right or wrong it's their land to utilize or screw-up.

And you should retake your English classes.

It is 'must have', not 'must of'. 'Must of' is nonsensical gibberish. This tends to be lost in your other gibberish.

To the first 2 sentences, duh. To the third, what are you talking about? Airborne? LOL, so NOT what I said.
Sorry, I really don't have time to give "Ecology of the tropical rainforest 101" right now.
Maybe after I get off work. [8D]
