Status: offline 		I think I might get an answer here. This place is full of brainpower.

Now I have these laptops, two at the house. They have wireless. I can't get any free wireless around here as all the networks are secured so I have the old regular network cable running to it from the router. Thing is though, I have two of them.

Is it possible to configure one to be like a gateway to the network ? What I mean is plug one in and let the other one go through the wireless for internet etc. so I can say, surf the web in the bathroom on the other one ?

I ask because at one time, before I got the router I did it the hillbilly way - I guess you would call it. I had two network cards and one went to the modem and the other connected (an)other PC(s). Can I do sort of the same thing here ? Of course to complicate things all the laptops have Vista on them.

While I am not holding my breath, lately I've found PCs to do alot of things I never expected.

Status: offline 		From what I am getting of this post you wanting one to have access to the Internet and the other not or perhaps your asking for one to allow access to the other?

I think probably you  need to set up a DMZ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMZ_%28computing%29 or perhaps http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/it-guy/linksys-dmz-setup-14185.

As for the Secured Access, I would suggest you start using something like war driving. http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/89d1/ to id the net work and then something like Cain and Able (USE AT YOUR OWN RISK) for access.

Again there is lots of software out there legal and illegal that makes access to the internet freely available. Please check with local law enforcement in your community before attempting to access anyone else's net work. Some cops don't care, some cops will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law

Status: offline 		The link referring to the DMZ is broken. The other one appears to be for a unit that detects wireless signals.

I don't mind just using my own account. I can get a couple of networks here but they are all secured.

I just wonder if this could work, like I've seen systems setup before. One PC has two network cards, one goes to the modem and the other, via a crossover CAT cable goes to another PC or even a router. Seems to me wireless should be able to work the same way.

I'm trying to avoid another doodad. Behind my system(s) are more copper than,,,,,,,,, that country where they mine the copper, has.

I am guessing they are secured because they dont want other people using the wireless they paid for? Just a guess.

Status: offline 		In the set up you had before you were going from one nic card to the other.  The flaw in your plan with the laptops is that I would guess the cards in both are receivers.  Somewhere in the mix you would need a transmitter.  

As has been already suggested, you really just need a wireless router.

You might want to read them both, since you're running Vista on both your laptops. The second link is for Windows XP. Vista offers better network security (WPA2). Also, my apologies for that first link jumping into page 3. I forgot to click back to the start before I copied it.

Status: offline 		Yes I will delve into it deeply when I am getting close to actually doing it. At the same time I will be learning Vista. I might as well because either I get it, even kicking and screaming or eventually things won't work anymore. I've come to the conclusion that I am stuck with Vista on these laptops. Even if I got XP to run I would be searching for drivers forever.

HA ! one of these days I might even figure out how to work my cellphone. Sure I can make a call on it but I see people using them as camcorders, getting their email and all that. I am far from that. And I have no idea what a twitter is, and can see no practical use for anything like what I've heard about them.

After that there are a few more PC challenges anyway. If I pull this off I have a few things to try on the newfangled laptops, like duplex multimedia using files, or the cam and mike. Things like that. And then of course I will have to find a way to refine an internal search for media purposes. All in good time.

Oh, and fl, I know what you are saying, I know the difference between a transmitter and reciever. But then when you type something in or click on a link you are transmitting, how else would the servers know how to direct the request ? True it is probably assymetrical, with much better recieving than transmitting. In fact what I heard is that if you have DSL it is just a new name for ASDL, the first letter of which stands for assymetrical. It is logical because for the most part, people are downloading alot more than they are uploading. What really befuddles me is how a dish based connection handles this. It transmits up all the way to the satellite or what ? I find it hard to believe that this little couple hundred dollar dish can transmit 22,000 miles away. But they get it done somehow, it is something for me to look up someday.

Hunky, I'll check out those links but they seem not to be converted. But they seem to be from youtube so I'll get it on my other PC. This one here I use for more important shit, like causing trouble here. I won't install ANYTHING on this one, even flashplayer. Plus the speakers fell behind the desk and I am too lazy to go retrieve them. But here in my boudoir this thing signs into everything transparently, and nobody else uses it except for on very rare occasions my sister. But I use this one for business. I am that careful with it.

I'll be around. Sometime this week I will try this and see how it goes.

On cell phone vid- I have done that- and one does not get alot of time- maybe 30 seconds to record.   Perhaps the new expensive phones can go longer.   I have however used my cell cam for lots of things. Including when out and about. You do not need to have cell service to use the cell cam.  Only to send it.  But you could load the pics to a computer and then send them.   Since I figured the cell cam I have not bought film.  Or those throw away cameras.    You can also use the audio record on the phone- will give you more time then vid- this could be convenient to know it is there.
Often a cell phone battery fade- so carry a spare if you expect to use it a good amount.

A few years ago you could use these features with no one noticing much.  But now as people have caught on- you want to be careful when you record where --- it is not wanted.   

These features are easier then setting up a wireless.

On this computer the wireless set itself up- then it stopped- after the x number of days- which means- I likely had to buy a subscription to the service.   But I had a 50 foot wire which reaches most of the house.  So I use the wire.

Status: offline 		go to walmart, buy a linkskys (thats the cheap one around here) wireless router. hook it up to the main computer then put the wireless code into the labtops and your done

thats what i did, i have two labtops that run wireless and the desktop, and friends bring thiers over,

oh yeah you can secure it too so other people cant use your wireless :)
