I heard this on the radio on my way home this evening.
President Obama said in an interview that he would rather be a GOOD

one-term President, than a mediocre two-term President.

Evidently he is realistic enough to consider that possibility.
Now, he has 3 years left to be a GOOD one-term President, if that ends up
being the case.
On the other hand, if he is a GOOD President, he most certainly will be voted
in a second term, right?

Anyone else looking forward to the State of the Union speech, Wednesday night?

I hope like hell he isn't using Jimmy Carter as his model of that!

He can only do what Congress lets him do. They might let him be a good president. As long as he doesn't try to change anything. No matter what they say, neither party actually wants things to change. If he tried to actually clean-up congress they would close ranks on his ass. They would treat him like he was trying to steal their baby. They would make sure he was a one term president. I believe the president has the power to dismiss the congress and order new elections. I would like to see a president do it. If the people are behind him and he dismisses congress and they have new elections. He might actually get things moving.

Which Article is that?

No clue. It might be wrong. But I will see if I can find out.

You're thinking of other nations' parliamentary system.

In this environment, if a president could throw out an entire opposition party Congress, it surely would have been done by now.

No, the President cannot fire Congress.
My feeling is that Obama will split the difference and be a bad one term president.

You're probably right. They aren't ones to leave a trick untried.

Unfortunately, it seems you are making the mistake that far too many Americans make (and have for decades upon decades now), and that is making the assumption that each and every one of the 545 elected US government officials are "the powers that be" who decide what is best for all of us. What you're failing to grasp is each and every one of these elected officials work for us, the American people. Hence it is "us" who ultimately decide what is best. Yet there are far too few who realize this (BTW this is how our government officials prefer it to be) that we can yield this power. The power that, without a doubt, garners their undivided attention whenever we stand together and voice our concerns, and/or speak out for for what we believe in. And even more so whenever we each exercise our right to vote in any election. We, the American people, are the ones who hold the power, but we must first be willing to become involved and exercise these inalienable rights, and/or voice our concerns.

He may be one term if he doesn't fire Geithner and Summers.

The Geithner-Summers plan is worse than you think | Economists ...

The Geithner-And-Summers Plan (GASP) to buy toxic assets from the banks is rightly scorned as an unnecessary give-away by virtually every independent economist who has looked at it. Its only friends are the Wall Street firms it is designed to bail out.

In an article last month, one of us (Sachs, FT, March 23) described the systematic overbidding entailed by the proposal. Others have since made similar calculations, including Joseph Stiglitz (NYT, April 1) and Peyton Young (FT, April 1). The situation is even worse that it looks, however, since the GASP can be gamed by the banks that own the toxic assets to boost the purchase prices for their bad assets even higher than has been suggested to date.

http://blogs.ft.com/economistsforum/2009/04/the-geithner-summers-plan-is-worse-than-you-think/

If this is true, and I think it is, Obama is an asshole and he/they (the administration) can go fuck themselves.

The Geithner-Summers Plan is Even Worse Than We Thought

Two weeks ago, I posted an article showing how the Geithner-Summers banking plan could potentially and unnecessarily transfer hundreds of billions of dollars of wealth from taxpayers to banks. The same basic arithmetic was later described by Joseph Stiglitz in the New York Times (April 1) and by Peyton Young in the Financial Times (April 1). In fact, the situation is even potentially more disastrous than we wrote. Insiders can easily game the system created by Geithner and Summers to cost up to a trillion dollars or more to the taxpayers.

I think he is going to truly screw up in this speech.  There is talk on the news that he will freeze spending for the next 3 years, except for military and counter-terrorism.

Instead I would like to hear what direction he will be taking to create jobs in this country.  Though that is near impossible when for the last 30 years we have lost our manufacturing base in this country.  We have seen for the last 10 years tax cuts have not created job, well they did in China and India.

They have created huge profits, but it seems those huge profits have not equaled jobs in this country.  Hell, even Walgreens announced 2 weeks ago that all their accounting will be done overseas to increase profits.

So how do you get business to invest in this country?  It worked very well up until Reagan lowered the corp tax and what changed was profits increased, CEO pay went through the roof and jobs moved overseas to increase profits.  People bitch about Corp taxes, yet in 2008 AIG paid less than 1% taxes (it was in Time/Newsweek/and Crains) Everyone bitches about the high tax rate but seem to forget the final rate corporations paid after deductions are taken.

Large corporations by and large are not the generators of the majority of jobs. It's the small businesses that do that. Get a group of small businessmen together and ask them how the tax rate is affecting them.

Small business owners were at the big job summit. Those concerns were brought up but apparently the Obama administration wasn't listening.

Mia, I for one will not waste my time watching Obama tonight. The spending freeze he wants. 250 billion over a 10 year period. It will do absolutely nothing.

True, then why don't more people bitch when the corp tax cuts are for the largest business's in this country?  No one has done much for the small business in 20 years,

Who was the Presidential Candidate who, in response to the economic climate, wanted to have a limited spending freeze during the Presidential debate and what was the reply from the opponent?

Find out at this link.

Who won?

Now using a "sledge hammer" is a good idea?

This $10 Billion savings represents about 10 days of interest on the current $12.3 Trillion of debt; $1.35 trillion deficit added since January 2009, represents less than one month's interest (10 days worth if it were a business borrowing at 'Prime'.)

Still think there is a different between the parties or the men at the top of either ticket representing the party line?

servant, I have good news for you.
The state of the union address is tomorrow night, make sure to tune in.

As much as I disliked GWB, I normally listened to his state of the union address {or at least a portion of it}, because I care about what the President of my country is talking about.

Mia, i have to be honest. i've NEVER looked forward to the state of the union address. When i was a kid, it always inturrupted my favorite TV shows, and now, i have some Hitachi time scheduled. Running that and the TV just doesn't seem "green" i don't like to pull so much energy at one time. Unless Rahm Emanuel is going to be getting some face time....then i'll turn off the volume and sorta kill two birds with one stone....yanno???
