When the Queen dies, Prince Charles becomes King instantly - no question there. Then, King Charles must be crowned. He could abdicate at that point, and Prince William would become King instantly. Remember that the late Duke of Windsor was to be crowned King Edward the Eighth, but he gave up the Throne and married a divorced woman (Wallis Simpson) instead. Having no children, his abdication made his younger brother King George the 6th. King George the 6th was Elizabeth's father and his death made her Queen Elizabeth the 2nd. Upon the death (or abdication) of the reigning monarch the crown passes to sons first, then to daughters, then to brothers, then to sisters. If that doesn't decide it, the crown passes to siblings (brothers first, then sisters) of the parent of the reigning monarch. Lather, rinse, repeat. So, possibly Charles dies before the Queen..... The next in line is Andrew and that'll shake things up a bit.... But I think what will happen is that when Elizabeth II has reigned longer than Victoria (on 10 September, 2015 at age 89), Elizabeth will abdicate (possibly waiting for her 90th birthday.) Charles will then abdicate (being 67 or 68 years old) and the King will then be William (at age 2015-1982 = 33 or so.)
