Status: offline 		Only a father would pay for a $25 medication to treat his daughters 2 year old hamster.

Twenty five dollars could easily buy two new hampsters and a bag of food. Aren't hamsters lucky to make it past two years anyhow? The medication is an antibiotic liquid that has to be digested. It's for treating a bump on the hamsters stomach area. If it dosen't work, the hamster will die. If it does work, well the hamster will live on for about another three to six months.

To make the story short, the daughter looked up at her father with a glee of hope to have the medication to save Winkles. The father bought the 10 ml of the medication for $25.00 Would you have done this?

Or a mother.

Our cat needs an $800 treatment for hyperthyroidism or $32/mo for pills the rest of her life. Been debating which route to go.

Status: offline 		Heck, I'd even do it for someone I didn't know. $25 is nothing when it's used to make a child happy or an animal healthy. Hamsters generally live about three to three and a half years, at least in my experience, and most people don't bother to take rodents to the vet even if they think they're sick. Kudos to you for teaching the child to be responsible about her pets. :)
(And I've spent over $200 on a cousin's mouse because her parents wouldn't, so don't be at all embarrassed if people say that $25 for hamster meds is crazy.)

I am so sorry to hear this Proud. :-( I had a similar situation. The cat my parents got me after my fiancee died got very sick one Friday night. We rushed her to the Animal Emergency Room. They told us it would be expensive to treat her. She was family. I gritted my teeth and OKed the work. It ended up costing $760. After she was stable, they transferred her care to our regular family vet. He gently told us that the cat had chronic renal disease (kidney failure) and about 6 months to live. He discussed euthanasia with us. I asked about quality of life issues. He said we would be able to tell when her quality of life was no longer decent. We decided to tough it out and try to keep her happy and comfortable as long as we could. Her meds were only $8 a month, but she did need about $120 in blood work every six months. She lived for seven more years. I would not trade one second of those years.

You're going to have to sit down and consider the not only the monetary implications, but the cat's expected quality of life and the stress of giving daily medication to a cat. (After about a year, it gets easy. They don't even fuss anymore.) You no longer can go away for a weekend and leave the cat alone with a huge bowl of food and water.

My thoughts are with you. Your choice isn't easy! *hugs*

Status: offline 		Yes, as mother would as well. And as I've seen my mother shell out more in 1 year for her 18 year old shitzu than she did for herself. He passed away peacefully about 3 weeks ago. when you take on a pet, that pet because family, and relies on you just any other member of your family would. I would gladly shell out to tend to my kids... 2 legged... and 4 legged as well...

Hamster's freak me out!
I don't like having furry things that run on treadmills all day in my house....unless they only have two legs, are running naked and they are cute......

Status: offline 		When my daughter was 6 her hamster Fred had gotten out of his cage. Around midnight  I heard our little dog growling and got up to see why. There was Fred laying on the floor not moving. I yelled for  the dog to move and called out  to hub and in doing so woke my daughter up. We put Fred in a padded shoe box little blanket on him and rushed 30 min away to an all night animal hospital.     After a little while the vet called us in. There was Fred laying inside a oxygen mask ( made for a cat- he was so tiny inside it but it was the only way to let this little guy get oxygen)They had taken X-rays and  found Fred's back was broken and had given him some pain med.    The vet told us of course Fred was not going to make it but they would keep him as comfortable as possible. She said we should go on home and they would call us. Before we left the Vet looked at us  she had a tear in her eye and said. She was truly impressed with us rushing out in the middle of the night for our daughters hamster, she said no way on earth would her parents of ever done that. She said she was touched to see how important our little girls pet was to us and that it didn't matter to us the size of that pet  our daughter loved Fred and that is all that mattered. Next morning the Vet called to let us know Fred had passed. My hub and daughter went to bring him home. The Vet office had him in a beautiful Box laying on a piece of light blue satin material with tiny flowers all around him.  Later that day we buried Fred under my daughters window, she said a few words and my hub found a boulder we wrote his name- date we got him and the date we lost him.The cost was $169.00  would we do it again?  oh yes,  in fact we did a couple yrs later we took hamster # 2 Fuzzy Maraca to the Vet when he was sick.absolutey will always do what ever we need tosorry this got longer than I had thought

Status: offline 		Heck, I'd do that for a friend's hamster.

If treatment will allow an animal to continue to live a good life (ie, with a high quality of life) I would do it in a heartbeat. While cost would be a consideration, it would be a minor one.

I've adopted my anmials. I've taken responsibility for them. I don't stop having that responsibility if it starts costing money.

Dude, the question would be, is there ANY father out here who wouldn't? I think that overwhelming majority would, its just part of what fathers DO

Status: offline 		I spent $40 on cold medication for a cat (2 decades ago when $40 actually bought something). I don't think I have ever spent $40 on medicine when I've had a cold...

As other's have said, for a pet (and for a child) most of us would move a mountain.

Have you ever tried giving a cat a pill?  Spare your arms, legs, hands and other body parts and go with the $800 treatment!

Thanks Beach, and i'm glad you had so many good years with your cat. We will probably start with the pills and see how it goes. I'm not sure of the implications if she misses some doses if we go out of town. In the past this cat has been pretty easy to give pills to. I'm also going to check online and see if i can find them cheaper.

LOL, if it were our other cat that would be the case, but this one has taken pills pretty easily in the past.
