Evanesce -> I'm very sad today... (3/24/2006 10:20:36 PM)

This morning (technically, it was Friday morning, but I've not been to bed yet), I woke up and went downstairs, went into the parlor to say good morning to my three cockatiels and one cockatoo, and to my complete shock, my sweet little cockatiel, Jose, was lying dead on the bottom of his cage.  Just last night, he was singing to me and nibbling my fingers, and getting his head rubbed just the way he liked it.

Jose was just 10 years old.  He was the second-born son of Bijou, who survives him (at age 15) and Binky, who preceded him in death at the age of 7.  He was hand-tamed at an early age and sold to a friend of my daughter's.  However, he never liked that friend, and would not socialize with her, so after just a few months, I bought him back from her.  Since then, he believed I was his mate, and would sing to me whenever I entered the room.

Jose was a good bird, and I'm going to miss him.

Losing a loved pet is never easy. May all your memories be fond ones.

The affection of a pet is so wonderful...I'm having to say goodbye tomorrow to a kitten that belongs to a very good friend. Even though the kitten in not mine, I've spent a lot of time with her, and come to adore her so much. She's such a rascal! But my friend is moving to New York, and kitty is being returned to her birth family...

Animals are indeed special, and they can quickly own a piece of your heart. My heart goes out to you, on the loss of a member of your family.

HUGS,
Cin

I'm sorry for your loss Evanesce.

I was just thinking, is there anyway to check whether birds have viruses, as you have other ones, it might be a good thing to do?

brightspot -> RE: I'm very sad today... (3/25/2006 3:29:02 AM)

He sounded like a very smart sweetheart.
When the saddness passes may you remember him
fondly and light heartedly when thinking of the time you shared.

Huge hugs, we have zillions of animals--last weekend My teens guinea pig of 9 years died--in the midst of so  many life changes too--he made the move from St. Louis here to NC--so that was sad--the ending isn't easy--

So sorry to hear, Evanesce.  Nothing latches onto our hearts like a loving pet does.  Just keep thinking of the Rainbow Bridge.  There are birds there too[:)]

There is a way, yes.  However, the most common avian illness is PBFD (psittacine beak & feather disease), and it's extremely unlikely that any of my birds have this, or any other contagious illness.  My flock has been closed since1997, which is when I got my youngest cockatiel.

Thanks, everyone, for your kind thoughts.  Jose really was a very sweet bird.

I have not the words of wisdom nor comfort Denise, but I feel and empathise for you

As I read your note, my own 'tiel Piper is sitting on my forearm alternating between trying to pull the letters off the keys on my keyboards and demanding head scritches.  Gremling, the lovebird, is throwing a ball around her cage as loudly as possible, just so I don't forget she's awake.

My sympathies to you and yours.   Birds are wonderful pets with huge personalities.
